The Corning Museum of Glass anchors most itineraries, followed by wine tastings along the Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake wine trails. Hammondsport, on the south end of Keuka Lake, offers a walkable village with the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum and lakefront access for swimming and paddling.
Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks. Within two miles, the glen's stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course, and the gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. The camping season in this part of New York runs primarily from mid-spring through mid-fall. At Watkins Glen State Park, Mohawk Village and Cayuga Village are the only loops with electric sites, and those loops typically open a week ahead of the rest of the campground in early to mid May, with the main campsites and cabins running through early to mid October. Camp Bell Campground is typically open May 1 through mid-October, though shoulder-season amenities such as pools may be shut down.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Mid June to August are the busiest times at the park, especially on weekends. Race weekends at Watkins Glen International compound demand across the region, so campgrounds within a half-hour drive can fill well ahead of the event.
Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, ideal for hiking the gorge trails. Spring is the best time to see the waterfalls at peak flow. Winter camping options are limited, and most private parks in the area close for the season.
How to book campgrounds near Campbell
New York State Parks use a centralized reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Reservations for campsites may be booked 9 months in advance for a 2-night minimum stay, and to register for a campsite, the camper must be 18 years old and show proper ID. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival for campsites, and reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267.
Private parks book directly. Camp Bell Campground, Cardinal Campsite, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Finger Lakes, Hammondsport / Bath KOA Resort, and Sunflower Acres Family Campground each take reservations through their own websites or phone lines.
For race weekends and peak summer holidays, book several months out. Weekday and shoulder-season stays are far easier to secure on short notice.
What to expect
Sites around Campbell range from full-hookup pull-throughs at private resorts to more rustic tent and cabin loops in state parks. Camp Bell Campground features 96 full or partial hookup campsites that are big rig friendly, with many accommodating slide-out RVs, and the park provides free WiFi, is pet-friendly, and has a dump station.
State-park camping is more basic. Mohawk Village and Cayuga Village are the only loops with electric sites at Watkins Glen. Expect fire rings, potable water, and shared shower buildings, but limited full-hookup availability.
Cell coverage along Route 415 and I-86 is generally reliable, though it thins out in the surrounding hills. Quiet hours are strictly enforced from 10 PM to 8 AM at state parks, and race weekends bring louder, busier conditions at nearby private resorts.
