Camping near Croton-on-Hudson
Croton-on-Hudson sits in northern Westchester County along the east bank of the Hudson River, roughly an hour north of New York City. The village puts RV travelers within short driving distance of two major New York State Park camping systems: Harriman State Park in the Palisades region to the southwest, and Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park to the northeast in Putnam and Dutchess counties.
Public campgrounds in the area lean rustic. Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park operates without electrical hookups and limits trailers and RVs to 30 feet, while Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park sits within a park covering roughly 15,000 acres with a beach, boat rentals, and multiple lakes for fishing.
Private options fill the hookup gap. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, Camp Wyanokie, and New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday offer more developed sites and are typically the practical choice for larger motorhomes or travelers who need power and sewer service.
Things to do near Croton-on-Hudson
The surrounding parks are the main draw. Harriman State Park connects to the Appalachian Trail, and Lake Welch offers a swimming beach adjacent to Beaver Pond Campground. Fahnestock's Canopus Lake has a sandy shore, rowboat and kayak rentals, and a picnic area, with fishing at Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and four smaller ponds for bass, pickerel, perch, and brook or rainbow trout.
Closer to town, Croton Point Park juts into the Hudson with river views and picnic areas, and the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail runs nearby. Bear Mountain State Park, Hudson Highlands State Park, and Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park are all within a short drive for day trips.

The main New York State Park camping season runs roughly mid-May through early November, with Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond both operating within that window in a typical year. The Clarence Fahnestock main campground is closed for the 2026 season for construction of a new bathhouse, though the Pelton Pond Pavilion can be rented on a daily basis and the Group Wilderness Campground remains open for 2026.
Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest, particularly at the state park sites within reach of New York City. Booking several weeks to months ahead is standard for July and August. Fall brings cooler nights and Hudson Valley foliage, generally peaking in mid to late October, and is often the best trade-off between weather and crowds.
Winter camping options are limited. Fahnestock Winter Park grooms trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, but the campgrounds themselves close for the cold months.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campsites near Croton-on-Hudson
New York State Park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond, are booked through ReserveAmerica, either online or by calling 1-800-456-2267. Camping reservations can be made up to nine months in advance on a rolling window, and same-day reservations are allowed for campsites until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Private parks such as Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, Camp Wyanokie, and New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. For KOA properties, reservations can also be made through the KOA site or app. RV length limits and hookup availability vary by site, so confirming rig dimensions at booking is important.
What to expect at Croton-on-Hudson campgrounds
Expect rustic conditions at the state park sites. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups, does not permit pets or alcohol, and includes shared full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station on site. Random alcohol searches may be conducted, and campsite occupancy is limited to six people per site.
Roads inside the parks are narrow and winding, and some sites have tight approaches, so larger Class A motorhomes are better matched to the private campgrounds. Cell service is generally usable but inconsistent under tree cover. Black bears live in the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food should be stored securely, and deer ticks are present in warmer months, making repellent and tick checks worthwhile.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Croton-on-Hudson, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Croton-on-Hudson, NY?
RV rental in Croton-on-Hudson is more affordable than you might expect for a Hudson Valley getaway just 35 miles north of Manhattan. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes run $250 to $400 nightly. For a cheap RV rental in Croton-on-Hudson, book midweek in May or late September, when Hudson Valley demand softens but the weather is still pleasant. Many hosts also offer multi-night discounts of 10 to 20 percent for stays of a week or more. Pro tip: filter listings by Instant Book to compare real prices side-by-side without waiting for host approval.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Croton-on-HudsonDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Croton-on-Hudson?
Good news: for nearly every RV rental in Croton-on-Hudson, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. New York only requires a special Recreational (R) endorsement for motorhomes over 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), and the vast majority of rentals on RVezy, including Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers, fall well below that. You'll need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before your trip. That's it, you're ready to roll up the Hudson.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my rental protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, and this is one of the best parts about booking through RVezy. Every RV rental in Croton-on-Hudson booking comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in. You choose your protection level during checkout, so you can pick the coverage that gives you the most peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, which is a huge relief for first-time renters. So if a deer crosses Route 9 or a branch grazes the awning at Croton Point Park, you're covered and supported by RVezy throughout your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Croton-on-Hudson RV rental?
Booking is genuinely low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not individual hosts), and it includes a grace-period window after booking where you can get a full refund, plus tiered refund options depending on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. Special circumstances like natural disasters, which the Hudson Valley occasionally sees with nor'easters or hurricane remnants, are also factored in. You'll see the full cancellation details during checkout before you confirm. The takeaway: you can lock in that fall foliage RV trip from Croton-on-Hudson now and still have flexibility if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Croton-on-Hudson RV trip?
Absolutely, and the Hudson Valley is a fantastic region to road trip with a dog. Just use the 'Pet-Friendly' filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental in Croton-on-Hudson with hosts who welcome four-legged guests. Croton Point Park allows leashed dogs at campsites (though not in cabins or on the swim beach), and nearby Teatown Lake Reservation has miles of dog-friendly trails just 10 minutes from town. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River also welcomes leashed pups across its 4,315 acres. Pro tip: message your host before booking to ask about any pet cleaning fees so there are no surprises at checkout.
parks.westchestercountyny.gov/croton-point-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway?
Yes, RV delivery in Croton-on-Hudson is one of the smartest moves for first-timers. Many hosts will drive the RV directly to Croton Point Park, your driveway in Westchester, or even further afield to Harriman State Park or Bear Mountain, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. This is especially valuable in the lower Hudson Valley because New York's parkways (Saw Mill, Taconic, Bronx River, Hutchinson) have low stone bridges that make them unsuitable for taller motorhomes, so delivery removes the routing headache entirely. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and check each listing for delivery radius and per-mile fees, typically $2 to $4 per mile beyond a free zone.
rvezy.com/How far can I travel from Croton-on-Hudson on a typical RV rental?
Plenty far, the Hudson Valley puts you within easy striking distance of incredible destinations. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available at roughly $0.35 to $0.50 each. Looking for an RV rental with unlimited mileage? Several hosts offer that as an add-on, especially for longer trips. From Croton-on-Hudson, popular drives include Bear Mountain State Park (15 miles), Hyde Park and the FDR Historic Site (45 miles), the Catskills around Phoenicia (75 miles), Lake George (175 miles), and Cape Cod (about 250 miles). Pro tip: estimate your total miles before booking and ask the host about a flat-rate mileage bundle, it often saves money on longer routes.
rvezy.com/Where are the best campgrounds near Croton-on-Hudson?
You're spoiled for choice on RV camping in Croton-on-Hudson and the surrounding Hudson Valley. Top picks include: Croton Point Park (right in town on a Hudson River peninsula with full-hookup RV sites, reservations through Westchester County Parks); Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park (about 20 miles southwest, tent and RV sites, seasonal); Highland Falls RV Park near West Point (full hookups, open year-round); and Clarence Fahnestock State Park in Carmel (about 25 miles north, wooded RV and tent sites). Book Croton Point through Westchester County Parks starting each January for peak summer and October dates.
parks.westchestercountyny.gov/croton-point-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Croton-on-Hudson?
The sweet spot for a Croton-on-Hudson RV trip runs from late April through late October, with two standout windows. Late September through mid-October delivers world-famous Hudson Valley fall foliage, crisp 50 to 65 degree days, and Sleepy Hollow's Halloween events just 10 miles south. Mid-May through June offers blooming landscapes, fewer crowds, and 65 to 80 degree daytime temps. July and August are warm (often 80 to 90 degrees and humid), perfect for swimming at Croton Point's Hudson River beach. Winter RV rentals are available too at Croton Point Park, though bathhouses close in the colder months. Pro tip: book October weekends by July, they sell out fast.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Croton-on-Hudson a good idea?
It's a great place for a first time renting an RV, especially if you start with a smaller rig. Most RVezy hosts in the Croton-on-Hudson area provide a full pickup walkthrough covering propane, water, slide-outs, leveling, and dumping, so you won't be left guessing. For maximum confidence, choose a Class B campervan or a small travel trailer (under 25 feet), and have it delivered straight to Croton Point Park so you skip city driving entirely. Stick to Route 9, I-87, and I-84, all of which welcome RVs (unlike New York's car-only parkways). Message hosts before booking with questions, they're usually happy to walk through what to expect.
rvezy.com/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Taconic State Parkway approach or a battery issue at Bear Mountain is just a phone call away. The roadside team handles tows, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockouts, and tire service. Your host is also a direct resource for RV-specific questions like why the generator won't start, and the RVezy support team is reachable through the app. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV's tire pressure, propane gauge, and fluid levels at pickup, it makes any roadside call faster and easier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Croton-on-Hudson rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and easy from Croton-on-Hudson, you're perfectly positioned for a multi-state RV road trip from Croton-on-Hudson. Popular routes include Vermont's Green Mountains (3 hours north), the Maine coast (5 to 6 hours northeast), Cape Cod (4 hours east), and Washington D.C. (5 hours south). Canada is allowed on many listings, but cross-border travel requires advance approval from the host and confirmation that the insurance extends across the border, so message the host before booking if Montreal or Quebec City is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance limitations. Always carry the RV's registration and insurance documents at any border crossing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Croton-on-Hudson RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items, but it's easy to plan for. Gas prices in Westchester County tend to run above the national average, so budget on the higher end when estimating per-gallon costs. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 18 to 22 MPG for a Class B campervan or a tow vehicle with a small trailer. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop through the Hudson Valley and Catskills in a Class C, plan accordingly for fuel costs at current local prices. Pro tip: fuel up in Peekskill or Cortlandt Manor rather than in lower Westchester, prices often drop noticeably north of I-287.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground around Croton-on-Hudson?
Earlier is always better in the Hudson Valley because the region's campgrounds are popular escape valves for the NYC metro. Croton Point Park opens its reservation system early each year for the upcoming season, and October weekends (Sleepy Hollow Halloween season) sell out within weeks, book by February or March if possible. State parks like Beaver Pond at Harriman and Clarence Fahnestock take reservations through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance. For summer weekends, lock in 3 to 4 months out. For midweek shoulder-season trips, you can often book 2 to 3 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if Croton Point is full, try Mountain Lakes Park in North Salem, it flies under the radar.
parks.westchestercountyny.gov/croton-point-parkWhat should I know about driving an RV around Croton-on-Hudson?
The single most important rule: stay off New York's parkways. The Saw Mill River Parkway, Taconic State Parkway, Hutchinson River Parkway, Bronx River Parkway, and Palisades Interstate Parkway all have low stone bridges and prohibit trucks and commercial vehicles. The low clearances make them unsafe for any motorhome over 9 feet tall. Stick to Route 9, Route 9A, I-87 (NY Thruway), I-287, and I-84, all of which are RV-friendly with standard interstate clearances. Traffic on I-287 and I-87 spikes weekday rush hours and Friday afternoons heading north, so plan pickups for mid-morning or Saturday mornings instead.
dot.ny.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Croton-on-Hudson?
Hudson Valley campgrounds run the gamut from full-service to rustic. Croton Point Park offers electric and water hookups (with full-hookup sites available), hot showers, flush restrooms, a swim beach on the Hudson, hiking trails, a nature center, and a playground; an on-site dump station handles your gray and black tanks. Highland Falls RV Park near West Point has full hookups year-round, free WiFi, and laundry. State park campgrounds like Beaver Pond at Harriman typically have water spigots and dump stations but limited electric hookups, so fill your fresh tank before arrival. Pro tip: if you need to dump tanks between trips, the Croton Point dump station is available to overnight campers and is one of the few in lower Westchester.
parks.westchestercountyny.gov/croton-point-parkWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental from Croton-on-Hudson?
More than you'd think, today's rentals are basically apartments on wheels. A typical motorhome rental for a family RV trip in Croton-on-Hudson includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone riding. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and outdoor speakers. Generators (for off-grid power) and built-in WiFi or cellular boosters are common on mid-to-high-end listings. Check each listing's amenities tab to confirm what's included, and message the host if you want something specific like a portable grill or kids' bunks.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options should I look at when booking?
The right add-ons can transform your trip. Popular extras for a motorhome rental in Croton-on-Hudson include linen and kitchen kits ($50 to $100), camping chairs and tables ($25 to $50), portable grills ($20 to $40), generators ($25 to $50 per night), bike racks, and pet cleaning fees ($25 to $75). Most hosts offer two pickup options: meet at the host's location (usually free) or delivery to a campground or address (priced per mile or as a flat fee). Many hosts allow pickup between 1 and 4 p.m. and dropoff by 11 a.m. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle linens, a generator, and delivery to Croton Point Park, you'll arrive to a fully set-up RV and start vacationing immediately.
rvezy.com/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book a campervan rental in Croton-on-Hudson (or any RV type), you pay through RVezy's platform using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. A security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before your trip (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value), and it's released back within about a week of your return assuming no damage or excess cleaning. To avoid any deposit issues: do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, photograph the interior and exterior including the awning and tires, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks before drop-off (or pay the host's dump fee, usually $40 to $75). Easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there RV rentals available in winter around Croton-on-Hudson?
Yes, winter RV rentals are absolutely an option in Croton-on-Hudson, and they can be a magical way to experience the Hudson Valley. Croton Point Park keeps RV sites available outside of the deepest winter months, so check current dates directly with Westchester County Parks before booking. For cold-weather trips, filter for RVs with heated holding tanks, a working propane furnace, and shore power compatibility, then ask your host directly about freeze-prep procedures like adding RV antifreeze to the gray tank. Daytime temps in November to March typically run 25 to 45 degrees, so pack layers, a space heater for shore-power sites, and tire chains if you're heading into the Catskills. It's quieter, cheaper, and the Hudson views are spectacular.
