Camping near Friendship, New York
Friendship is a small hamlet in Allegany County, New York, sitting in a wide valley near the center of the county and northeast of Olean. Interstate 86 exit 29 is at the west end of the hamlet, which makes it an easy pull-off for RV travelers moving along the Southern Tier. The town center sits on Van Campen Creek, a tributary of the Genesee River, and is surrounded by large hills typical of the Allegheny Plateau.
Campgrounds cluster along the ridge-and-valley terrain around Friendship and stretch north toward the Genesee River gorge. Misty Mountains Park and Willard's Country Place sit closest to town, with Riverside Park Campground and Evergreen Trails Campgrounds a short drive away. Houghton / Letchworth KOA lies farther north and works well as a base for day trips into Letchworth State Park.
The area draws RV renters looking for quiet, wooded sites, access to Allegany County outdoor recreation, and a location within reach of Rochester, Buffalo, and the Pennsylvania Wilds.
Things to do around Friendship
Letchworth State Park is the marquee day trip. The Genesee River carves a gorge with cliffs, three main waterfalls, and a long trail network, and it sits within reach of the Houghton / Letchworth KOA. Rock City Park near Olean offers massive rock formations and short trails with long views, and Griffis Sculpture Park near Ellicottville spreads large-scale sculptures across fields and woodlands.
Allegany State Park, south of Salamanca, adds hiking, biking, fishing, and swimming inside a large forested reserve. Closer to camp, families use campground pools, playgrounds, ponds, and stocked streams. Anglers fish Van Campen Creek and the upper Genesee, and cyclists ride the quiet county roads that thread through the surrounding hills.

The main camping season in this part of western New York runs from spring through mid-fall. Letchworth State Park's tent and trailer campground operates roughly May through October, with electric sites bookable through the New York State Parks reservation system. Private parks around Friendship generally follow a similar window, opening once overnight freezes end and closing before deep winter sets in.
Summer brings the warmest, driest weather and the busiest weekends. July and August fill fastest at Letchworth and at KOA properties, so weekend sites should be locked in well ahead. Late June through Labor Day is also when Letchworth's swimming pools operate, which matters for families camping with kids.
Early fall is a strong window for RV renters. Cooler nights, thinner crowds, and hardwood color across the Allegheny Plateau make September and October popular for gorge hikes and scenic drives. Winter camping options are limited: most private parks close, and higher-elevation roads see steady snow.
How to book campgrounds near Friendship
Letchworth State Park campsites and cabins are booked through the New York State Parks reservation system, online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Reservations can be made up to nine months in advance and carry a two-night minimum stay. During the peak season same-day reservations may be allowed when sites remain open, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Private campgrounds near Friendship, including Misty Mountains Park, Willard's Country Place, Riverside Park Campground, Evergreen Trails Campgrounds, and Houghton / Letchworth KOA, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and fall-color weekends, book several weeks out and confirm rig-length limits before arrival.
What to expect at Friendship campgrounds
Sites around Friendship are generally wooded, level, and cut for RV and trailer use, with full-hookup options offering 30 and 50 amp service at private parks. Expect fire rings, picnic tables, and shared bathhouses. Cell coverage is uneven in the hills, and grocery, fuel, and basic services are available in the hamlet of Friendship itself.
Letchworth's campground provides electric sites, dumping stations, showers, cabins, and group camping areas, plus food concessions and swimming pools inside the park. It sits in the Genesee River gorge south of Rochester, so expect a drive from the Friendship area up Route 19 or 19A.
Roads through Allegany County are two-lane and winding in places, and elevations climb above 1,500 feet. Plan fuel stops, and watch weather forecasts for spring mud and fall frosts.

Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: if you're heading to Canada, bring your passport, vehicle paperwork from the host, and proof of rabies vaccination for any pets.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Friendship RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to plan. Most Class C motorhomes in this region get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Gas in Allegany County typically runs a bit below the New York state average, with stations in Cuba, Belmont, and Wellsville just minutes from Friendship. For a 5-day, 400-mile loop through Allegany State Park and Letchworth, budget roughly $150 to $250 for fuel in a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Pennsylvania when you can, prices across the border in Bradford are often noticeably cheaper.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Friendship?
Earlier is better, especially for the big-name parks. Allegany State Park opens reservations 9 months in advance through the New York State Parks reservation system, and popular sites at Cain Hollow and Red House book within minutes of becoming available for July, August, and fall foliage weekends. Letchworth State Park follows the same 9-month window. Smaller private parks like Houghton/Letchworth KOA and Allegany Mountain Resort usually have more flexibility but still fill up on summer weekends. Pro tip: pair your RV rental in Friendship, NY with a campsite booked the same day reservations open at 9 a.m. Eastern, and set a calendar reminder, it's the single biggest hack for landing a lakefront spot.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/allegany-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=31What are the local driving conditions like around Friendship, NY?
The driving here is refreshingly low stress. Friendship sits along Interstate 86 (the Southern Tier Expressway), giving you a wide, gentle highway that makes a motorhome rental Friendship NY trip feel relaxed even for newer drivers. Expect rolling hills, twisting two-lane roads through the Allegheny foothills, and occasional steep grades around Allegany State Park, where the speed limit drops and switchbacks are common. Winter brings serious lake-effect snow and icy mountain roads from November through March, so most rentals run May through October. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, they're abundant in Allegany County. Pro tip: use Route 17/I-86 as your main artery and avoid shortcut dirt roads your GPS might suggest, especially near Houghton.

Many rentals near Friendship also include a TV, generator, outdoor awning, and propane tanks filled and ready. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm specifics like a coffee maker, outdoor speakers, or a kid-friendly bunkhouse layout.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and extras can I get with my campervan rental in Friendship?
Hosts make it easy to roll out fully equipped. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental in Friendship include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $50), camping chairs and outdoor mats ($15 to $30), bikes or kayaks for Allegany State Park's Red House Lake, portable generators, and propane refills. Many hosts also offer pickup or dropoff flexibility, late checkout, and delivery to nearby campgrounds for an extra fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, with some offering unlimited mileage for the perfect RV road trip from Friendship. Pro tip: bundle bedding, kitchen, and outdoor gear together and ask the host for a package discount, most are happy to oblige.
rvezy.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Friendship, NY, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV), and it's released back to your card after the trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, take timestamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, follow the host's fuel and dump-tank instructions, and return on time. Pro tip: review the listing's mileage, generator, and cleaning policies before pickup so there are no surprises at the end of your Allegany trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Friendship for the winter or shoulder seasons?
Yes, and shoulder-season trips are some of the best value around. While many campgrounds near Friendship close by late October, plenty of RVezy hosts rent year-round, and several Allegany State Park cabins stay open all winter for a true Allegheny Highlands snow escape. For cold-weather travel, look for RVs with heated holding tanks, a propane furnace, and shore power capability, then plan stays at parks with winter hookups or use the RV as a basecamp. Pro tip: a March or April rental from Friendship gives you discounted nightly rates, snow-melt waterfalls at Letchworth, and zero crowds, easily one of the savviest family RV trip Friendship NY options.
