Golden's Bridge camping overview
Golden's Bridge sits in northern Westchester County, New York, about an hour north of Manhattan along the I-684 corridor. The hamlet works well as a base for RV travelers exploring the Lower Hudson Valley, the Taconic foothills, and nearby Connecticut, with public campgrounds within a 30 to 60 minute drive in three directions.
The closest overnight options are state park campgrounds in the Hudson Highlands and Harriman areas of New York, plus two Connecticut state parks in the Litchfield Hills to the east. Private full-hookup camping is limited in the immediate area, so most RVers choose between rustic state park sites and one nearby private lakeside park in Dutchess County. Terrain is rolling and wooded, with reservoirs, small lakes, and hardwood forest defining the landscape. Cell coverage is generally good near the highways but can thin out inside the larger state parks.
Things to do near Golden's Bridge
Hiking is the dominant outdoor activity. The Appalachian Trail crosses the region just north and east, and Harriman State Park alone holds hundreds of miles of marked trails. Fahnestock's Canopus Lake and Lake Welch in Harriman both offer sandy swimming beaches with lifeguards in summer, along with rowboat and kayak rentals.
Fishing is popular on Lake Zoar, Lake Waramaug, and Sylvan Lake for bass, perch, and pickerel, with a state license required in each jurisdiction. Cyclists ride the loop around Lake Waramaug, and paddlers launch canoes and kayaks on the smaller ponds. Day trips reach Bear Mountain, the Hudson River towns of Cold Spring and Beacon, and the Litchfield Hills wineries in Connecticut.

The public camping season in this region is short and tightly defined by state park schedules. Most nearby campgrounds open in mid to late May and close between mid-October and the end of October. Lake Waramaug State Park Campground, for example, is scheduled to run from late May through mid-October, with cabins closing after Labor Day. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park typically opens in mid-spring and runs through mid-October.
Two important closures affect planning. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park is closed for the 2026 season while a new bathhouse is built. Kettletown State Park's campground remains closed after flood damage from an August 2024 rainfall event, with no reopening date announced. Sylvan Lake Beach Park operates as a private campground with a longer warm-season window and should be booked directly. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with fall foliage weekends in October also filling quickly.

How to book campgrounds near Golden's Bridge
New York State Parks use ReserveAmerica. Beaver Pond at Harriman accepts bookings up to nine months ahead, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Fahnestock uses the same system when open, though the campground itself is closed for 2026.
Connecticut State Parks also use ReserveAmerica, with a window of up to 11 months in advance and a one-day minimum lead time. Lake Waramaug requires a two-night minimum for advance reservations. Sylvan Lake Beach Park is private and takes reservations directly through its own website or by phone. Weekends between late June and early September fill fastest, so booking eight to twelve weeks out is recommended for summer stays.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Most state park sites in this region are rustic. Beaver Pond has a dump station and showers but no electric hookups, and RVs are limited to 30 feet. Fahnestock's Pelton Pond, when open, has no hookups and no dump station. Lake Waramaug offers 76 wooded and open sites with a dump station and showers but no electric or water at individual sites. Both Connecticut campgrounds and Harriman prohibit pets and alcohol.
Sylvan Lake Beach Park is the local exception for full hookups, with electric, water, sewer, and 50-amp service, a laundry, propane, and a private beach. Cell service is generally reliable near Golden's Bridge and thins inside the larger parks. Bears, raccoons, and deer ticks are all present, so food storage and tick checks are routine.
