Camping near Heritage Hills, New York
Heritage Hills sits in northern Westchester County, within an hour of several established state park campgrounds in the lower Hudson Valley, Hudson Highlands, and Litchfield Hills. The area offers a mix of primitive tent sites, RV-friendly loops, and rustic cabins, most operated by New York State Parks or Connecticut State Parks and bookable through ReserveAmerica.
The closest option is Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, a 15,000-acre park covering land in Putnam and Dutchess counties, though the campground is closed for the 2026 season while a new bathhouse is built. To the south, Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park sits about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge and adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area, with access to swimming beaches and an extensive Harriman trail network.
Across the Connecticut line, Macedonia Brook State Park and Lake Waramaug State Park Campground open the door to the Litchfield Hills. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, a private option in Dutchess County, rounds out the choices for families that prefer full-service amenities.
Things to do near Heritage Hills
Hiking is the headline activity. Clarence Fahnestock State Park carries an extensive trail network with routes from easy pond loops to strenuous ridge climbs through forests, lakes, and low mountains. At Macedonia Brook, more than 10 miles of trails cross varied terrain, with the Blue Trail running over Cobble Mountain and neighboring peaks for views toward the Catskills and Taconic Mountains.
Water recreation is easy to find. Canopus Lake at Fahnestock has a sandy beach and boat rentals during summer, and fishing across the park's lakes and ponds targets bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked brook and rainbow trout. At Lake Waramaug, campers swim at the sandy beach, launch car-top boats or rent kayaks and canoes on site, and cycle the roughly 8-mile perimeter road that circles the lake.

Most public campgrounds in this region run a late-spring to mid-fall season. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock is closed for the 2026 season while a new bathhouse is constructed, so travelers targeting Fahnestock should confirm the reopening timeline with New York State Parks before planning around it. The Canopus Lake beach and boat rentals still operate under a limited seasonal schedule, with weekend and holiday hours in late spring and daily hours from late June through Labor Day.
In Connecticut, both Macedonia Brook and Lake Waramaug open for the 2026 season on Friday, May 22. Lake Waramaug closes at noon on Monday, October 12, while Macedonia Brook winds down its peak period after Labor Day. Beaver Pond at Harriman is the more flexible option on this side of the state line, with a longer reservation season anchored by the Lake Welch recreation area.
Fall foliage draws heavy weekend demand across all four state parks. Winter access is limited to day use at most parks, though Fahnestock keeps groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails at its Winter Park.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds near Heritage Hills
New York state park sites, including Beaver Pond at Harriman, are booked through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can be made for the current day and up to 9 months in advance, with same-day bookings accepted until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins at New York state park campgrounds are permitted only on campsites, not cabins.
Connecticut state parks use the same ReserveAmerica platform but different rules. At Macedonia Brook and Lake Waramaug, reservations are required with no walk-ins, must be made at least 48 hours ahead of arrival, and can be made up to 11 months in advance. A two-night minimum applies at Macedonia Brook. Peak summer weekends and October foliage weekends fill fast, so booking as the window opens is the safest approach.
What to expect at Heritage Hills area campgrounds
Sites in this region skew rustic. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups, with select sites able to fit a trailer or RV up to 30 feet, plus centrally located full-service bathrooms, showers, laundry, and a dump station. Macedonia Brook is even more basic: sites accommodate tents and smaller RVs, but camping is primitive with no electrical hookups, no showers, and cell service that is very limited across the park.
Rules matter for family planning. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond, Lake Welch, or Lake Waramaug campground, and alcohol is prohibited at Beaver Pond, Macedonia Brook, and Lake Waramaug. Only one vehicle is allowed at each Beaver Pond campsite. Black bears inhabit the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food should be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or bear canister overnight.
