Campgrounds and RV parks near Hewlett Harbor, NY

Hewlett Harbor sits on the South Shore of Nassau County, Long Island, close to the western edge of the Rockaways and within easy driving distance of both New York City and central Long Island's state parks. Renters basing here can reach urban campgrounds inside Gateway National Recreation Area to the west, Long Island state park campgrounds to the east, and ferry-access barrier-island sites on Fire Island. The mix suits families who want a beach-and-city trip in a single booking window. The closest developed camping is at Floyd Bennett Field on Jamaica Bay, part of Gateway National Recreation Area, which offers tent and RV parking sites with restrooms, showers, and running water. Across the harbor in New Jersey, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City sits directly across from Lower Manhattan and functions as the closest full-service RV park to New York City. For a more traditional state-park stay, Heckscher State Park on the Great South Bay and Allaire State Park in central New Jersey both fall within a reasonable drive, and Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island offers a car-free barrier-island experience reached by ferry from Patchogue.

Reservation systems vary by park. Reservations for Floyd Bennett Field are handled through Recreation.gov and can be made up to six months in advance, with a nightly limit and a maximum stay of 14 nights. For New York state parks including Heckscher, campsite reservations can be made for the same day and up to nine months ahead through Reserve America, with a same-day cutoff of 3 p.m. Watch Hill Family Campground is different. It does not accept reservations through Recreation.gov; bookings go through the concessioner, LoveFINS, at least 48 hours in advance, with a two-night minimum on Friday and Saturday. Backcountry permits for the surrounding Otis Pike Wilderness are handled separately on Recreation.gov and require ferry access from Patchogue. Allaire State Park takes online reservations up to eleven months in advance through the New Jersey State Parks portal, and summer and holiday weekends sell out quickly, so booking a few months ahead is wise. Liberty Harbor takes reservations directly by phone or on its website, and its year-round schedule gives flexibility for last-minute urban stopovers.
