Campgrounds near Hopewell Junction
Hopewell Junction sits in Dutchess County within New York's Hudson Valley, roughly an hour and a half north of New York City and a short drive from Poughkeepsie and Beacon. The area works well as an RV base because it puts several state parks, private campgrounds, and Hudson River attractions within a 30 to 45 minute radius.
Options closest to town include Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, a family-run lakefront campground with RV sites, tent sites, and a private beach. A short drive south leads to Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park, a wooded state campground set in the Hudson Highlands of Putnam County. To the north along the Hudson, Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park offers riverfront tent and RV camping with a marina, cabins, and a golf course on-site.
Across the river, New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday provides a full-service RV park with pool, cabins, and pull-through sites. Interlake RV Park & Campground rounds out the nearby options for RV travelers.
Things to do near Hopewell Junction
Outdoor activity centers on the Hudson Highlands and the river itself. Clarence Fahnestock State Park covers more than 14,000 acres with over 50 miles of trails, a section of the Appalachian Trail, and swimming at Canopus Lake's sandy beach. Fishing is productive across Canopus and Stillwater Lakes plus four smaller ponds, targeting bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked brook and rainbow trout.
Along the river, Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park has hiking trails, a marina with boat launch and kayak access, and picnic bluffs overlooking the Hudson. Nearby cultural stops include the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site in Hyde Park, Staatsburgh State Historic Site, and the Walkway Over the Hudson pedestrian bridge.
Families staying at Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc can swim, launch non-motorized boats, and use the on-site playground and recreation areas.

The RV camping season generally runs from late April through mid-October. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park operates its campground from late April into mid-October, and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock has typically opened in early May and closed in mid-October. The Newburgh KOA Holiday runs a similar spring-to-fall calendar, with peak amenities available in the warmer months.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm, humid days, active lake beaches, and full campgrounds on weekends, so weekend sites at state parks frequently fill well in advance. Late May through June and September into early October are quieter, with cooler nights and lower bug pressure. Autumn draws leaf-peepers to the Hudson Highlands.
Note that the Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock is closed for the 2026 season for construction of a new bathhouse. Winter camping is limited, though Fahnestock Winter Park offers cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails.

How to book campgrounds near Hopewell Junction
New York state park campgrounds, including Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock and Margaret Lewis Norrie, are booked through the ReserveAmerica system online or by calling 1-800-456-2267. Reservations open up to nine months in advance, and popular summer weekends often fill the moment the window releases. Same-day reservations are permitted at campsites until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are allowed on campsites only.
Private campgrounds use their own systems. New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday takes bookings through the KOA website or app. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc and Interlake RV Park & Campground accept reservations by phone or through their own websites, with seasonal sites also available at Sylvan Lake.
What to expect
Expect a mix of rustic state-park camping and full-service private parks. State park sites at Pelton Pond and Margaret Lewis Norrie are wooded, with picnic tables, fire rings, and central bathhouses, but hookups are limited. Pelton Pond operates as a primitive campground with no electric, water, or sewer at the sites, while Norrie has a small number of electric sites plus a central dump station.
Private parks handle bigger rigs more easily. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc provides full-hookup RV sites, laundry, and a dump station. The Newburgh KOA offers pull-through sites and bundled amenity access.
Quiet hours at state parks run 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Pets are allowed with a two-pet limit, leashes required, and proof of rabies vaccination on request. Cell coverage is generally reliable throughout the region.

New York does not require a commercial driver's license or any special endorsement for standard motorhomes, campervans, or travel trailers listed on RVezy. Booking is lower risk than you might think. RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the individual host, and there is a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel and the policy tier that applied at booking. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your Hudson Valley plans stay on track. If plans shift, reach out through the platform and the support team will walk you through your options.

Many local RVezy hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer directly to your campsite at Sylvan Lake Beach Park, Interlake RV Park in Rhinebeck, or even your own driveway in Dutchess County. They will level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no nervous first drive on I-84. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host for a quote based on your destination.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hopewell%20Junction%2C%20New%20YorkHow does mileage work and how far can I drive on a Hopewell Junction RV trip?

From your starting point off I-84, you can reach the Catskills in under an hour, Lake George in about 2.5 hours, the Adirondacks in 3.5 hours, Niagara Falls in roughly 6 hours, or coastal Maine in around 5 hours. The mileage allowance and any overage rates are shown clearly on each listing before you book, so you can map your route without surprises.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhere are the best campgrounds near Hopewell Junction for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice. The closest favorite is Sylvan Lake Beach Park on McDonnells Lane, with RV sites, electricity, a swimming beach, and boat rentals on a spring-fed lake. Clarence Fahnestock State Park, a short drive south, offers wooded sites with access to Canopus Lake and the Appalachian Trail. Interlake RV Park in Rhinebeck is big-rig friendly with full hookups, a pool, and laundry. Mills-Norrie State Park in Staatsburg sits right on the Hudson River, and the Newburgh KOA is a family favorite with pools and mini-golf. Book early for July and August weekends.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Hopewell Junction?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time, and each season brings something special. May and June offer mild temperatures in the 60s to high 70s and lush green trails. July and August warm into the 80s with occasional humid days, perfect for swimming at Canopus Lake or Sylvan Lake. But September and the first three weeks of October are the local secret: crisp 50 to 70 degree days, fewer crowds, and the Hudson Valley's legendary fall foliage exploding in red and gold along the Taconic. Winter rentals are available too if you want a cozy snow getaway near Fahnestock Winter Park's groomed cross-country trails.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Hopewell Junction beginner-friendly?
Yes, and Hopewell Junction is actually an ideal spot for first time renting an RV. The area's wide suburban roads, low-traffic county routes like Route 82, and easy I-84 on-ramps give new drivers room to get comfortable. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, generator, and waste systems, and you can text them anytime during your trip with questions. If even the pickup feels intimidating, choose a host who offers delivery so the RV arrives ready to use. Start with a one or two night shakedown trip at Sylvan Lake Beach Park, only 10 minutes away, to build confidence before heading further.

You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Hopewell Junction booked through RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Whether you are parked at Mills-Norrie State Park or rolling along I-84, help is one tap away in the app. Save the roadside number to your phone at pickup and you will roll out with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental across state lines or into Canada from Hopewell Junction?
Yes, interstate travel is generally welcome and Hopewell Junction is perfectly placed for it. You're 90 minutes from Connecticut's Litchfield Hills, two hours from the Berkshires in Massachusetts, three hours from the Jersey Shore, and about six hours to the Canadian border at Champlain. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and insurance terms, so message them directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits. Bring your passport for any border crossing and you're set for an epic multi-state Hopewell Junction RV trip.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is easier than you think. Campervans and Class B rentals typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 mpg, and larger Class A units land around 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New York gas prices currently run a bit above the national average, with stations along Route 9 in Fishkill and I-84 exits in Hopewell Junction generally cheaper than NYC-area pumps. For a typical weekend loop to the Catskills and back, budget roughly $80 to $180 in fuel. Filling up before crossing into Connecticut usually saves a few cents per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground for my Hopewell Junction RV trip?
Earlier is better, especially for summer weekends. New York State Parks like Mills-Norrie and Taconic State Park open reservations up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the most coveted Hudson River-view sites fill within hours of release. For private parks like Sylvan Lake Beach Park or Interlake RV Park, aim to book two to three months ahead for July and August, and four to six weeks for foliage season in October. Midweek stays in May, June, and September are often bookable just days out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for nine months before your target date if you want a riverfront site at Mills-Norrie.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are the driving conditions like for an RV around Hopewell Junction?
Mostly very manageable, with one big heads-up. I-84 and Route 9 are wide, modern highways that handle RVs of any size comfortably, and county roads like Route 376 and Route 82 are easy cruising. The critical rule: do not take New York's scenic parkways such as the Taconic State Parkway, Sprain Brook, or Saw Mill River Parkway, because commercial vehicles and most RVs are banned, plus low stone-arch bridges have damaged plenty of motorhomes. Stick to numbered interstates and US highways and you'll be golden. The terrain is rolling Hudson Valley hills, nothing alarming, just downshift on grades near Beacon and Cold Spring.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/systems-optimization-repository/2024%20OS%20Master%20List.pdf.htmlWhat hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Hopewell Junction offer?
Expect a healthy mix. Private parks like Sylvan Lake Beach Park and Interlake RV Park provide full hookups with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi at most sites. State parks are more rustic: Clarence Fahnestock has no hookups but offers clean centralized restrooms and showers, while Mills-Norrie State Park has electric sites and a dump station. For dumping and freshwater fills between trips, head to Newburgh KOA or Interlake RV Park. Always confirm site length when booking, since some state park sites are limited to shorter rigs.
parks.ny.gov/parks/mills-norriepointstatepark/details.aspxWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Hopewell Junction?
More than most first-timers expect. A typical RV rental in Hopewell Junction comes fully equipped with sleeping for 2 to 8, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Most listings also include a flat-screen TV, and many have onboard generators for off-grid stays at Fahnestock. Wi-Fi varies, so check the listing details if you need to work from the road. Hosts often add starter kits with linens, towels, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs. Just bring food, clothes, and your sense of adventure.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hopewell%20Junction%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Hopewell Junction, NY?
Lots of ways to customize. Popular add-ons on RVezy include bike racks, kayak or paddleboard packages, generator hours for boondocking, propane refills, linen and kitchen kits, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees for furry travelers. Many hosts also offer delivery to Sylvan Lake Beach Park or Interlake RV Park, and some will meet you at Stewart International Airport if you are flying in. Pickup and dropoff times, included mileage, and any overage rates are spelled out clearly on each listing. If you are heading to Fahnestock where there are no hookups, budget for extra generator hours and a fresh water fill before leaving Hopewell Junction.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hopewell%20Junction%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay for your Hopewell Junction RV rental through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps every transaction protected. A separate refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup and released after a smooth return, typically within a few days. The deposit amount is shown on the listing before you book, so there are no surprises. To avoid any issues, do the walkaround with your host at pickup, snap photos of the RV's condition, and return it with the same fuel level and clean tanks.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Hopewell Junction, NY?
You're sitting on a goldmine of routes. From Hopewell Junction, head north 45 minutes to Hyde Park for the FDR Historic Site and Vanderbilt Mansion, then continue to Rhinebeck. Drive 90 minutes west to the Catskills for hiking at Kaaterskill Falls and craft breweries in Phoenicia. Two hours northeast puts you in the Berkshires for Tanglewood concerts. Three hours north reaches Lake George and the Adirondack foothills. For something different, head 2.5 hours east into Vermont's Green Mountains. Each route avoids the parkway restrictions, sticks to RV-friendly interstates, and delivers world-class scenery, especially during fall foliage in early to mid-October.
