Campgrounds near Jefferson Heights, New York
Jefferson Heights sits in Greene County on the eastern edge of the Catskill Mountains, minutes from the village of Catskill and the Hudson River. The location gives RV travelers access to both the Catskill Forest Preserve, overseen by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Hudson Valley corridor along Route 9W and Interstate 87.
Private RV campgrounds in the immediate area include Treetopia Campground, Blue Mountain Campground, Brook-n-Wood Family Campground, Whip-O-Will Campsite, and Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc. These sites typically offer electric and water hookups, pools, and family amenities.
For state-run camping inside the Catskill Forest Preserve, the closest developed option is North-South Lake in Haines Falls, the largest state campground in the preserve, with lake access, beaches, and hiking connections to Kaaterskill Falls. Kenneth L. Wilson and Devil's Tombstone are additional DEC campgrounds within about an hour's drive. Note that DEC campgrounds do not offer RV hookups.
Things to do near Jefferson Heights
The main draw is hiking. Kaaterskill Falls, one of New York's tallest cascading waterfalls, sits a short drive west of Jefferson Heights and connects to trails around the former Catskill Mountain House site. The Escarpment Trail near North-South Lake delivers cliff-top Hudson Valley views. Devil's Path, accessed from Hunter and Tannersville, is a strenuous route for experienced hikers.
Water activities are plentiful. Families use the swim beaches and rent rowboats, kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards at North-South Lake, fly-fish the Esopus Creek for trout, or kayak sections of the Hudson River from launches in Catskill village.
Off-trail options include the town of Hudson for restaurants and shops, and downhill or cross-country skiing at Hunter and Belleayre in winter.

Summer is peak season. Comfortable mountain temperatures pull weekend traffic out of New York City through Labor Day, and both private RV parks and state campgrounds fill quickly. Reservations weeks in advance are standard for holiday weekends.
Fall brings foliage crowds through late September and October, with peak color in the Catskills typically in mid-October. Some state campgrounds stay open into late October for hunting and leaf-peeping. Spring can be wet, with high stream flows and lingering mud on trails at elevation; a few private campgrounds open early for trout season in April.
Winter closes most developed campgrounds. North-South Lake and other Catskill DEC campgrounds operate from roughly mid-May through late October, with exact dates set each season. Backcountry camping above 3,500 feet in the Catskills is prohibited from March 22 to December 20 under DEC rules. Snowshoeing, ice fishing, and downhill skiing continue through the cold months for day-use visitors.

How to book a campsite
New York State DEC campgrounds inside the Catskill Forest Preserve, including North-South Lake, Kenneth L. Wilson, and Devil's Tombstone, are booked through ReserveAmerica or by phone. Reservations open up to nine months in advance, and same-day bookings are accepted until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are not permitted.
Private campgrounds near Jefferson Heights, including Treetopia Campground, Blue Mountain Campground, Brook-n-Wood Family Campground, Whip-O-Will Campsite, and Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc, book directly through each operator's website or phone line. For summer weekends and fall foliage, plan on booking eight or more weeks ahead. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type when reserving an RV site.
What to expect on the ground
Roads in the Catskills are narrow and winding, with steep grades on routes such as NY-23A through Kaaterskill Clove. Drivers of large fifth wheels or Class A rigs should map routes carefully and favor Route 9W and Interstate 87 approaches to Jefferson Heights before turning inland.
Black bears live throughout the Catskill Park. Food and trash should be locked in a hard-sided vehicle or, in the backcountry, hung at least 15 feet off the ground. New York's firewood rule bars untreated firewood from being moved more than 50 miles from its source; buying it at the campground or a nearby vendor is the safest approach.
Cell coverage is inconsistent once away from the Hudson River corridor. Download offline maps before driving to trailheads or state campgrounds. Biting insects peak from late May through July.
