MacDonnell Heights is a census-designated place in the town of Poughkeepsie, in western Dutchess County, New York. The community sits along U.S. Route 44 east of downtown Poughkeepsie, bordered on the southeast by Wappinger Creek. For RV travelers, it serves as a practical base for exploring the mid-Hudson Valley, with the Hudson River corridor, the Taconic State Parkway, and the Hudson Highlands all within a short drive.
The closest developed campground is Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park in Staatsburg, part of the Mills-Norrie complex on the east bank of the Hudson. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc and Interlake RV Park & Campground offer private-park options east of the city, while New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday sits across the river to the south.
Further south in Putnam County, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park anchors a large protected block of the Hudson Highlands. Together these give travelers a mix of state-park tent and cabin sites, private hookup parks, and full-service KOA amenities within roughly an hour of MacDonnell Heights.
Things to do near MacDonnell Heights
Outdoor activity in this stretch of the Hudson Valley centers on the river itself and the ridges to the east. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park offers hiking trails, a marina with a boat launch, and picnic areas on the bluffs overlooking the Hudson, plus the adjacent Dinsmore Golf Course and Staatsburgh State Historic Site.
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park covers roughly 15,000 acres across Putnam and Dutchess counties, with a swimming beach at Canopus Lake, rowboat and kayak rentals, and an extensive trail network that includes a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Fishing is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked brook and rainbow trout in the park's lakes and ponds.
Birding is strong along the Hudson: the Mills-Norrie-Staatsburgh Bird Conservation Area has recorded roughly 170 species, with heavy songbird activity during spring and fall migration.
