Campgrounds and RV parks near Machias, NY

Most trips center on the outdoors. Allegany State Park's Red House and Quaker areas both offer sand beaches, picnic areas, museums, hiking trails, and naturalist walks, plus five miles of paved trails around Red House that work well for kids on bikes. The Quaker area adds a sandy swimming beach, two fishing piers, a canoe and kayak access point, and a boat launch on Quaker Lake. Hiking highlights inside the park include Thunder Rocks, a group of ancient bedrock formations, and the Bear Caves grottoes. Fire towers, the Quaker Amphitheater programs, and the park museum give parents easy rainy-day options. Off-park, families day-trip to Ellicottville for lift-served mountain biking and village strolling, and to the Griffis Sculpture Park near East Otto. Because campgrounds sit at elevations well above the Lake Erie plain, summer temperatures run cooler than nearby Buffalo and Rochester, spring runoff can leave primitive sites muddy through early June, and fall temperatures drop significantly at night. September and early October are prized for foliage, with cool days and cold overnights. Winter camping is limited to winterized cabins and cottages plus snowmobile-oriented stays.

Expect wooded, hilly terrain, two-lane roads, and cell coverage that varies by carrier.
