Middleburgh camping overview
Middleburgh sits in the Schoharie Valley of upstate New York, about an hour west of Albany, at the base of Vroman's Nose. The village works well as an RV base for exploring Schoharie County, with a mix of state-run and private campgrounds within a short drive.
The closest public option is Max V Shaul State Park, a small, quiet camping area with 30 wooded tent and trailer sites, located in the Schoharie Valley along Route 30, approximately 6 miles south of Middleburgh, at the base of Toepath Mountain. Private parks in the area include Twin Oaks Campground, Locust Park Campground, Hide-A-Way Campsites, and Country Roads Campgrounds, which spread across the surrounding towns of Central Bridge, Gilboa, and nearby communities.
RV travelers should note that Max V Shaul offers a rustic experience: sites are wooded and well spaced, and there are no hookups, but water spigots are located throughout the campground for easy access. Full-hookup sites are found at the private campgrounds listed above.
Things to do near Middleburgh
Vroman's Nose is the signature hike in the area. The trail climbs roughly 600 feet to the summit in under a mile, and the ascent, though steep in parts, is short and suitable for hikers of all skill levels. The flat summit, known as the Dance Floor, delivers wide views over the valley.
On rainy days, families head to Howe Caverns for underground tours, or to Secret Caverns and the Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave. History-focused visitors can tour the Old Stone Fort in Schoharie and stop at Schoharie Valley Farms for cider, produce, and the Carrot Barn.
At Max V Shaul itself, fishing is allowed in Panther and Schoharie Creeks, and a car-top boat and fishing access trail to the Schoharie Creek is available. Mine Kill State Park, about 9 miles south, has the Blenheim-Gilboa Reservoir, Mine Kill Falls, and miles of trails, plus an Olympic-size pool, wading pool, and diving pool available at no cost to Shaul campers with a valid permit.

The camping season in Schoharie County is short and follows the New York State Parks calendar. Max V Shaul is typically open from mid-May through Columbus Day weekend in October, which brackets the practical window for most public and private RV camping in the area. Private parks around Middleburgh generally keep a similar rhythm, running from mid-spring into early fall.
Summer brings warm days, active creeks, and the highest demand. Weekends around Independence Day, mid-summer, and Labor Day fill first. Fall is prime for the Schoharie Valley: foliage typically peaks in early to mid-October, and Vroman's Nose and Route 30 draw leaf-peepers.
Winter camping is not offered. State-park campsites close after Columbus Day, though the day-use park stays open dawn to dusk year-round for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice skating near the playground. RV renters chasing shoulder-season trips should confirm private-park dates directly with each operator.

How to book a campsite near Middleburgh
State-park sites at Max V Shaul are booked through the New York State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only, so late planners still have options if the online window is closed.
Private campgrounds around Middleburgh, including Twin Oaks Campground, Locust Park Campground, Hide-A-Way Campsites, and Country Roads Campgrounds, book directly through their own offices or websites. Call ahead about RV size and hookup requirements, since site widths and length limits vary by park.
For peak summer weekends and foliage weekends in October, reserve as far ahead as possible. Cancellations do open up on ReserveAmerica, which sometimes frees prime sites close to arrival.
What to expect on-site
Expect a rural, small-town feel. Max V Shaul is quiet and wooded, with only 30 sites that are large, flat, and well spaced from each other. Sites have a picnic table and firepit but no hookups, and there is no dump station at the campground, so RV renters should plan a dump stop before or after their stay. A few sites can accommodate rigs up to about 25 to 35 feet.
Supplies are close but not on-site. Propane is available in Cobleskill, roughly 10 miles away, and Middleburgh village has a grocery, cafes, and shops near the Vroman's Nose trailhead. Cell coverage can be spotty in the valley, so downloading maps before arrival is wise.
Quiet hours and pets are actively enforced. Quiet time runs 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet, and current proof of rabies inoculation is required at check-in.

On RVezy you'll typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and luxury Class A rigs from $250 to $400 per night. Hosts set their own pricing, so you can sort by price to find a cheap RV rental Middleburgh travelers actually book. visitschohariecounty.com/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Middleburgh?
Great news for first-time renters: in New York State a standard Class D driver's license is all you need to drive virtually every RV listed on RVezy. New York only requires a special endorsement for recreational vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which is rare on the platform. To rent an RV in Middleburgh on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older, and your ID is verified during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection comes with my Middleburgh RV rental?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Middleburgh, NY through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 30 toward Vroman's Nose with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and the plan covers most accidental damage to the vehicle while you're on the road. This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so a small mishap on a narrow Schoharie Valley back road won't ruin your vacation. The choice of protection level stays with you, not the host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Middleburgh RV trip?
You can book with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you're not locked in the second you hit confirm. Refunds beyond that window depend on how far out your trip is and on special circumstances like severe weather, which matters in the Schoharie Valley where summer thunderstorms and winter snow can move in fast. If a true emergency happens, RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after every trip to help. Lock in your dates early for fall foliage and you'll still have flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Middleburgh RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts welcome four-legged road trippers. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to find a pet-friendly RV rental Middleburgh hosts have set up for dogs and cats, including rigs with easy-clean floors and delivery options. Once you arrive, your pup will love the area: leashed dogs are welcome on the Vroman's Nose hiking trail just off Route 30, along the Schoharie Creek paths in Timothy Murphy Park, and at most nearby campgrounds including Country Roads Campground in Gilboa. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size limits so check-in is smooth.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Middleburgh%2C%20New%20YorkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Middleburgh?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start a Middleburgh RV trip if you've never towed or driven a motorhome. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Middleburgh travelers love: they'll bring the rig to Max V. Shaul State Park in Fultonham, Nickerson Park Family Campground in Gilboa, or a private property along Schoharie Creek, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Filter by Delivery on the search page, then message your host with the exact campsite number. Delivery fees are usually based on round-trip mileage, and setup turns a first-time rental into a true drop-and-relax vacation.
parks.ny.gov/parks/127How far can I drive from Middleburgh on an RV trip?
Middleburgh sits in a sweet spot for road trips, and most RVezy listings include a generous daily mileage allowance (some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage). From Middleburgh you're roughly 40 miles to Albany, 70 miles to Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame, 35 miles to Howe Caverns, 110 miles to Lake George, and about 165 miles to New York City. Check each listing's mileage policy before booking and message the host if your RV road trip from Middleburgh will be long. Pro tip: ask about a weekly mileage bucket instead of daily, it usually stretches further.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106154-Mileage-and-generator-usageWhere are the best campgrounds near Middleburgh, NY?
You've got terrific options within a short drive. Max V. Shaul State Park in Fultonham (about 5 miles south on Route 30) offers wooded sites and is operated by New York State Parks. Country Roads Campground in Gilboa, roughly 12 miles south, has full-hookup sites and a family-friendly vibe along the creek. Nickerson Park Family Campground in Gilboa adds a pool and water activities, while Hide-A-Way Campsites near Central Bridge offers hookups closer to I-88. For best campgrounds near Middleburgh during fall foliage, book 2 to 3 months ahead, especially for weekends in late September and early October.
parks.ny.gov/parks/127When is the best time of year for RV camping in Middleburgh?
Middleburgh shines from mid-May through late October, with each window offering something different. Late spring (May, highs 65 to 75 F) brings green hills and quiet campgrounds. Summer (June through August, highs 78 to 85 F, cool nights in the 50s) is peak season for swimming in Schoharie Creek and farm stand visits. The crown jewel is fall foliage from late September through mid-October when the Catskill ridges explode with color, the absolute best time for RV camping Middleburgh has to offer. Winter (December to March) gets cold (teens to 30s F) and most state campgrounds close, so book a four-season RV with a furnace if you're chasing snow.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and Middleburgh is genuinely one of the friendlier places to learn. First time renting an RV here means rolling, low-traffic roads like Route 30 and Route 145 rather than white-knuckle highways. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, the generator, and dumping, and you can message them anytime during your trip. New renters should consider a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental Middleburgh hosts often deliver and set up for you. Pro tip: spend your first night at Max V. Shaul State Park, just minutes from town, so you can practice systems close to support.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007833-For-rentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing throughout Schoharie County and beyond. One call and help is dispatched to your location, whether you're parked at the Vroman's Nose trailhead or pulled off on Route 145 toward Cobleskill. Your host is also a quick message away for questions about quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: before you leave Middleburgh, snap a photo of the RV's VIN sticker and the propane shut-off, two things roadside assistance often asks about first.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Middleburgh RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy hosts in Middleburgh are happy for you to explore beyond New York, you just need to ask first. Popular interstate routes include Vermont's Green Mountains (about 90 miles east), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (75 miles), and Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains (around 175 miles south). Cross-border travel to Canada (Montreal is roughly 230 miles north) may be allowed depending on the host and the protection plan you choose, so confirm in writing before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Once approved, your host can recommend favorite stops along the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Middleburgh RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, and Middleburgh is well positioned to keep it reasonable. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg in a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 mpg in a Class C, 16 to 20 mpg in a campervan, and 12 to 18 mpg for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. New York gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, and there are convenient stations on Main Street in the Village of Middleburgh for an easy fill-up before you head out. Pro tip: top off in Cobleskill or Schoharie where prices often beat the more remote Catskill stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Middleburgh?
Earlier is better, especially for the fall color rush. New York State Parks campgrounds like Max V. Shaul accept reservations up to 9 months in advance through the state's official booking system at ReserveAmerica. For summer weekends and the late-September to mid-October foliage peak, aim for 3 to 6 months ahead. Private campgrounds like Country Roads, Nickerson Park, and Hide-A-Way typically need 4 to 8 weeks for prime weekends and are more flexible midweek. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday night, book Sunday through Thursday at a state park, then add a private campground for Friday and Saturday for the best of both worlds.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Middleburgh?
Driving here is mostly relaxed and scenic, which is part of the charm. Route 30 and Route 145 are well-maintained two-lane highways winding through farmland and along Schoharie Creek, perfect for getting comfortable in a motorhome rental Middleburgh travelers often choose for the Catskills. Watch for steeper grades and tighter curves as you head south toward Gilboa and the Catskill High Peaks, and keep an eye out for deer at dawn and dusk, particularly in autumn. In winter, lake-effect snow and icy patches are possible on hilltop sections, so check 511NY before you roll. The good news: there are no low-clearance bridges on the main valley routes.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at Middleburgh-area campgrounds?
Most local campgrounds are well set up for a smooth stay. Country Roads Campground and Hide-A-Way Campsites offer full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, and sewer) at many sites, while Max V. Shaul State Park provides electric sites with a central dump station and potable water fill. Nickerson Park adds a pool and family activities. Cell service is decent in the valley on Verizon and AT&T but can fade in the deeper Catskill hollows. For where to park an RV in Middleburgh between campgrounds, plan your dump and water stops at established campgrounds, as town pavilions and farm lots do not offer overnight hookups.
parks.ny.gov/parks/127What's actually inside the RVs listed on RVezy in Middleburgh?
More creature comforts than most first-timers expect. Typical Middleburgh listings include a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa sleepers (so a Class C often sleeps 4 to 6), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many rigs add a generator, outdoor TV, awning with LED lights, and Wi-Fi hotspot, which is handy in spots where Catskill cell coverage thins out. Family RV trip Middleburgh planners should filter by Sleeps 6+ and look for bunkhouse floorplans, which are popular for kids on creek-side campouts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Middleburgh%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons can I get with my RVezy rental in Middleburgh?
Hosts can make your trip almost turnkey. Common Middleburgh add-ons include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable generators, propane fire pits (perfect for chilly Schoharie Valley evenings), bike racks, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's address with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough, and dropoff times are flexible if you ask in advance. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 miles per night with affordable overage rates, and some advertise unlimited mileage for road-trippers. Use Instant Book for the fastest path to confirmation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Middleburgh%2C%20New%20YorkHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental Middleburgh trip, RVezy charges your credit or debit card through the platform, never directly to the host, so everything is tracked in one place. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after a clean return with no damage and tanks handled per the listing. To avoid surprises, take dated photos of the rig at pickup and dropoff, return it on time, and follow the host's fuel and dump instructions. RVezy's support team can mediate if any question comes up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny insider tips for an unforgettable Middleburgh RV trip?
Here's the local secret most visitors miss: hike Vroman's Nose at sunrise. The 1.3-mile trail starts on Mill Valley Road just off Route 30 and ends on a flat limestone plateau 600 feet above the Schoharie Valley, with one of the best panoramic views in the Catskills, especially during fall foliage. After your hike, grab breakfast on Main Street in the Village of Middleburgh, then drive 8 miles north to Schoharie Valley Farms (The Carrot Barn) for produce, baked goods, and a farm cafe. Cap the day with a sunset campfire at Max V. Shaul State Park. That's a Middleburgh, NY RV trip people talk about for years.
