Campgrounds and RV parks near New Hackensack, NY

The surrounding Hudson Valley is built for outdoor days. Clarence Fahnestock State Park has more than fifty miles of hiking trails, a sandy beach on Canopus Lake, and rowboat and kayak rentals. Fishing in the park's lakes and ponds is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked brook and rainbow trout, and a New York State freshwater fishing license is required for anglers sixteen and older. Along the Hudson, Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park offers riverfront trails, a marina with a boat launch, and picnic bluffs overlooking the water. Historic sites are close at hand, including the Vanderbilt Mansion, the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Val-Kill in Hyde Park, plus the village of Rhinebeck and the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie.

The mid-Hudson Valley has four sharply defined seasons. Summers are warm and humid, with average July highs around 84 degrees Fahrenheit, while winters are cold and snowy, with January averages near freezing and typical annual snowfall around four feet. Precipitation is spread relatively evenly through the year, with a modest summer wet peak. Campground seasons follow that pattern. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock is closed for the 2026 season to allow construction of a new bathhouse, so nearby travelers should plan around that closure. Margaret Lewis Norrie runs a late-April to mid-October window, and the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday operates a longer shoulder season from early spring into late fall. July and August draw the heaviest bookings and warmest lake swimming, while September and early October bring cooler nights, low humidity, and foliage color across the Hudson Highlands. Winter travel is limited to a small number of year-round private parks and day-use activities such as cross-country skiing at Fahnestock Winter Park.

Sites vary widely in style. Margaret Lewis Norrie offers a wooded setting with tent sites, cabins, showers, and restroom facilities within walking distance, but the park itself does not provide hookups at campsites; a pump-out station and electrical hookups are available at the marina. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock is closed for the 2026 season while a new bathhouse is built. For full hookups, travelers turn to the private parks. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, the KOA in the Newburgh area, and Interlake RV Park & Campground all provide hookup sites, laundry, and showers, with pools, playgrounds, and lake or pond activities aimed at families. Cell service can be uneven in wooded valleys, so download maps and reservation confirmations in advance.
