Campgrounds and RV parks near Pawling, NY

Hiking is the headline activity. The Appalachian Trail crosses through Pawling itself, and Macedonia Brook State Park offers miles of trails, including the Blue Trail across Cobble Mountain with views of the Taconic and Catskill mountain ranges. Fahnestock adds lake-loop and ridge trails, with fishing on Canopus and Stillwater lakes for bass, pickerel, perch, and trout. On the water, Sylvan Lake has designated swimming areas and a boat launch used by paddlers and small boats. Lake Waramaug is popular for paddling and shoreline swimming, and the Housatonic River near Housatonic Meadows is a well-known fly-fishing stretch. Off-site, families make short drives to Kent, Connecticut, the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, and farms across the surrounding Hudson Valley.

The camping season in this region is short and clearly defined. Connecticut state parks in the area operate on a spring-through-fall schedule: Macedonia Brook State Park generally runs from mid-spring into early fall, with the 2026 season posted through early September, and Lake Waramaug and Housatonic Meadows follow similar windows. New York state park campgrounds typically open in mid-spring and close in mid-fall, though travelers planning a stay at Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park should check current-year status directly, as the campground has been affected by bathhouse construction. Summer is peak. July and August weekends fill early, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day, and holiday stays at private grounds often require multi-night bookings. Foliage weekends in late September and October are the second peak, with cool nights and heavy demand along the Housatonic and Taconic corridors. Winter is essentially off-season. Most campgrounds close, roads inside state parks may be gated, and water systems are shut down. Travelers arriving in shoulder months should confirm water service, since bathhouses are often the first amenity to be turned off ahead of freezing nights.

State park campgrounds in this region are rustic. Macedonia Brook State Park offers 51 single-family sites in a wooded, meadow, or brook-side setting, with several tent-only. Pets and alcohol are prohibited at the campground, and cell phone service is not available within most areas of the park. Similar dead zones are common at the other Litchfield County parks. Sites at state parks are generally tent- and small-trailer-oriented, with limited or no utility hookups and shared bathhouses; Fahnestock has no hookups or dump station. Larger RVs are better suited to Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, which offers full-hookup sites. Plan for narrow, winding approach roads in the Taconic hills, and follow campground directions rather than GPS for the last few miles.
