Camping near Philmont, New York
Philmont sits in Columbia County in New York's Hudson Valley, a short drive from the Taconic State Parkway and within reach of the Catskills to the west and the Berkshires to the east. The village is small, but the surrounding countryside is stocked with lakes, state forests, and family-run campgrounds that suit RV travelers looking for a quieter base than the Hudson River corridor.
Campgrounds in this area fall into two categories. Lake Taghkanic State Park covers about 1,569 acres around a scenic lake in Columbia County and offers swimming, camping, and boating in the Hudson Valley. Private parks including Waubeeka Family Campground, Copake Camping Resort, Brook-n-Wood Family Campground, and Spacious Skies Woodland Hills typically provide full hookups, pools, and organized weekend activities.
Most properties are open from spring through mid-fall and cater to RVs of varying lengths. Road access is straightforward from Route 217, Route 82, and the Taconic, and the region suits travelers combining camping with day trips to Hudson, the Berkshires, or the Catskill high peaks.
Things to do near Philmont
Outdoor activity centers on water and hills. Lake Taghkanic State Park features two beaches, boat launch sites, rowboat, paddleboat and kayak rentals, cabins, campsites, picnic areas, playgrounds, playing fields, and pavilions. Nearby Copake Falls and Bash Bish Falls provide short hikes to notable waterfalls on the New York and Massachusetts border.
Columbia County is farm country, with pick-your-own orchards, cideries, and roadside stands throughout the season. The city of Hudson, roughly twenty minutes west, offers antique shops, restaurants, and Amtrak access along Warren Street.
For rainy days, Olana State Historic Site and Clermont State Historic Site are nearby and give parents a structured option without leaving the county.

The camping season in this part of the Hudson Valley generally runs from mid-May through late October at the main state park, with private parks opening earlier in spring and a few extending later for leaf-peepers. Lake Taghkanic State Park is open for the 2026 season from May 15 through October 24.
Summer is the busiest window. July and August weekends fill early at Lake Taghkanic and at private resorts with pools, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day. Weekday arrivals are noticeably easier, and shoulder-season trips in late May, early June, and September usually offer availability with cooler nights and fewer bugs.
Fall foliage in the Hudson Valley peaks in mid-October, drawing weekend traffic from New York City and Boston. Winter camping is limited: most private parks close by late October, and the state park campground shuts down for the cold months, though the park still supports wintertime activities such as ice fishing, ice skating, sledding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing when conditions allow.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

How to book campsites near Philmont
Lake Taghkanic State Park campsite reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Popular summer weekends often go quickly the day the booking window opens. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites.
Private campgrounds including Waubeeka Family Campground, Copake Camping Resort, Brook-n-Wood Family Campground, and Spacious Skies Woodland Hills take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends typically require a minimum stay and a deposit at booking.
A camping party and their equipment may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights, after which the party must leave the facility for 48 hours before registering again. RV travelers should confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and pet policies before finalizing.
What to expect around Philmont
Terrain across Columbia County is rolling rather than mountainous, and most campground access roads are paved or well-graded gravel. Sites at Lake Taghkanic State Park are wooded and can be tight for larger Class A rigs, while private parks tend to offer wider pull-throughs and more level pads. Large trucks, RVs and campers can enter Lake Taghkanic from the State Route 82 entrance.
Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers along the main roads and thins out in the hollows. Grocery runs are easiest in Hudson, Chatham, or Great Barrington across the state line. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with New York's rules on moving untreated wood.
Black bears are present in the region, so food should be stored inside the RV overnight. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, and repellent plus a post-hike tick check is standard practice.

You can book your Philmont RV trip with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy that applies to your reservation. Message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee and to ask about favorite local walks. Two pets per site is the standard at New York State campgrounds.
parks.ny.gov/parks/laketaghkanicCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or rental house in Philmont?
Yes, RV delivery in Philmont is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers who would rather skip driving a 30-foot motorhome on Route 9H. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who will bring the rig directly to nearby campgrounds like Taconic State Park at Copake Falls, Lake Taghkanic State Park, or even a private driveway in Hudson or Ghent. They will level the RV, hook up water and power, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end of your trip. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's home base, so booking from a Columbia County host keeps the cost low. It is one of the easiest ways to enjoy a Philmont RV trip stress-free.
