Camping near Scio, New York
Scio is a small town in Allegany County in the Southern Tier of western New York, sitting in the Genesee River valley along Route 19 just north of Wellsville. The area is rural and heavily forested, with rolling hills, working farms, and easy access to the Genesee River for fishing and paddling. RV travelers use Scio as a low-traffic base for exploring Allegany County and the surrounding state parks.
Private campgrounds within a short drive give RV renters a range of options. Riverside Park Campground and Trout Run Camp Resort offer full-service sites close to the river corridor, while Deer Run Campground, Evergreen Trails Campgrounds, and Willard's Country Place sit deeper in the countryside with wooded sites and family-oriented amenities.
Scio is also within reach of two of the state's largest parks. Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East, is roughly an hour north, and Allegany State Park, the largest of New York's state parks with 65,000 acres, is a straightforward drive west toward the Pennsylvania border.
Things to do around Scio
The Genesee River runs directly through the valley and is a draw for trout fishing, kayaking, and tubing during warmer months. Country roads through Allegany County suit slow-paced sightseeing, and the town of Wellsville just south of Scio has groceries, fuel, restaurants, and hardware for restocking an RV.
Day trips widen the options. Letchworth encompasses seventeen miles of gorge, three towering waterfalls, and dozens of smaller falls, with 66 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Allegany features geological formations including Thunder Rocks and a cluster of grottoes called Bear Caves, plus Red House Lake and Quaker Lake for swimming and boating.
Families with kids will find swimming, playgrounds, and stocked ponds at several of the private campgrounds nearby, including Riverside Park Campground and Willard's Country Place.

The main RV season in this part of New York runs from late spring through mid-fall. Private campgrounds around Scio generally operate from May into October, and campsites at Allegany are usually open from late May until the last weekend in October, while cottages and some cabins stay open year-round for travelers with cold-weather rigs.
Summer is peak season. Peak Season runs from the end of June to the end of August, when cabins and cottages require a 7 or 14-night minimum stay, so families planning a July or August trip should book early. September and early October bring fall foliage in the Genesee Valley and cooler nights that suit campfires; weekends fill quickly at Letchworth for leaf-peeping.
Winters are cold and snowy. Allegany draws snowshoers, snowmobilers, ice fishers, and cross-country skiers, particularly in the Art Roscoe Ski Touring Area, but most private RV parks around Scio close for the season.
How to book
Sites at Allegany State Park and Letchworth State Park are handled through the New York State Parks reservation system, operated by ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, either online or by phone at 1-800-456-CAMP (1-800-456-2267). Reservations close at 3pm on the day of arrival.
During peak summer weeks, cabins and cottages at Allegany require a seven or fourteen-night minimum. Permits for all cabin, campsite, and cottage reservations are non-transferable, and only the Primary Occupant listed on the reservation will be permitted to check in.
Private campgrounds near Scio, such as Trout Run Camp Resort, Deer Run Campground, and Evergreen Trails Campgrounds, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Book summer weekends and fall-foliage weekends several months out.
What to expect on the ground
This is rural western New York. Roads are two-lane and winding in spots, and cell service can be spotty inside Allegany State Park and along back roads in Allegany County. Download offline maps before leaving the highway.
Bear activity is real: Allegany State Park advises that campers are in bear country and should not leave food, garbage, coolers, or other containers unattended as they can attract bears. After 14 continuous nights, the camping party and equipment must leave the site and facility for 48 hours before registering again.
Expect classic Northeast forest camping: wooded loops, picnic tables and fire rings at most sites, dump stations at the larger parks, and hot showers in central bathhouses. Bring layers, insect repellent for late spring and summer, and firewood purchased locally, since New York advises against moving firewood to protect its forests.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Scio,%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Scio, NY?
Good news: a regular New York State Class D driver's license (or your home state/country equivalent) is all you need to rent an RV in Scio for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. New York only requires an R endorsement for personal-use motorhomes with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and nearly every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome rental in Allegany County falls comfortably under that threshold. You'll also need to meet RVezy's approved driver requirements (generally 25 or older), and RVezy verifies your ID right in the app. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) before your trip and you're ready to roll.

Booking your RV rental in Scio is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date and circumstances like severe weather, which matter in Western New York where winter storms and lake-effect snow can roll in fast. You don't need to hunt through individual listings for cancellation rules: it's a consistent, platform-wide process. If life happens, reach out to RVezy support and they'll walk you through your options.

Locally, the trails along the Genesee River and the Wellsville Walking Trail are great for stretching four legs. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee and bring a long lead, since campsite trees make perfect tie-out anchors.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/pets/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Scio?
Yes, RV delivery in Scio is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you're new to RVing or just want to skip the driving stress. Many Allegany County hosts will deliver your motorhome rental in Scio directly to spots like Allegany State Park's Red House and Quaker areas or private parks near Angelica and Belmont. They'll level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your campsite number. Pro tip: delivery fees usually scale with distance, so booking a host based near Wellsville or Belmont keeps costs down.
parks.ny.gov/parks/136/details.aspxHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Scio?
You've got serious range from Scio, and mileage policies are set by each host: many offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, while some list RV rental with unlimited mileage (great for a longer Scio RV trip). Popular drives include Allegany State Park about 45 miles southwest, Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the East) roughly 55 miles north, Watkins Glen and the Finger Lakes wineries around 90 miles east, Niagara Falls about 115 miles northwest, and Cooperstown approximately 180 miles east. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and if you're planning a big loop, message the host: many will bundle extra miles into a custom quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Scio,%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Scio, NY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to the best campgrounds near Scio. Evergreen Trails Campground in Angelica, about 15 miles north, offers wooded RV sites and cabins. Belmont's Genesee River area provides easy water access for paddlers and anglers. Heading southwest, Allegany State Park's Cain Hollow (Quaker Area) and Red House Area campgrounds give you 65,000 acres of un-glaciated forest to explore. For a destination trip, Letchworth State Park to the north has multiple loops along the gorge. Pro tip: most private parks open mid-April through mid-October, so confirm dates when you book your RV camping Scio trip.
parks.ny.gov/parks/136/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Scio, NY?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Scio, with summer highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and crisp 50s at night, perfect for campfires along the Genesee River. June brings green hills and waterfalls at full flow, July and August are warmest and busiest, and late September through mid-October explodes with Western New York fall foliage that rivals New England. Winters are snowy and cold (Allegany County averages around 70 to 90 inches of snowfall), so most private campgrounds close by late October. Insider tip: book the last weekend of September for peak leaf-peeping with smaller crowds and lower nightly rates.
weather.gov/buf/I'm a first-time renter, will I know how to use the RV?
You'll be set up for success even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host in Scio gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, awning, and dump procedures so nothing is a mystery. Many hosts also send a video walkthrough ahead of time and stay reachable by message throughout your trip. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, pick a host who offers delivery and setup, the RV simply appears at your campsite ready to go. Pro tip: plan an easy first night close to home, like Breezy Point Campground in Scio, so you can practice with everything before hitting the road.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/camping/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Scio booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. If something more serious comes up, RVezy customer support is available around the clock to coordinate repairs and help you keep your trip moving. Cell service can get spotty deep inside Allegany State Park, so save the roadside number in your phone before you head into the hills. Pro tip: do a quick pre-trip walkaround with your host at pickup, checking tires, fluids, and lights, which catches 90% of issues before they become roadside calls.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/511NY.htmlCan I take my Scio RV rental into Pennsylvania or across state lines?
Yes, multi-state road trips are one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Scio. The Pennsylvania border is just 20 miles south, putting Allegheny National Forest, the Kinzua Bridge Skywalk, and Cherry Springs Dark Sky Park easily within reach. Most RVezy hosts welcome interstate travel throughout the US since your protection plan and roadside assistance follow you across state lines. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals. If you're hoping to cross into Canada (Niagara Falls is only about two hours away), message your host first since cross-border travel requires host approval.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Realistic fuel planning makes your RV trip from Scio stress-free. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, Class A coaches sit around 7 to 10 mpg, and a tow vehicle hauling a travel trailer usually drops to 10 to 14 mpg. Gas stations in Wellsville, Belmont, and Cuba have the easiest large-vehicle access in the area, and prices in Allegany County typically run slightly below the New York state average. Pro tip: fill up in Pennsylvania if your route swings south, fuel is often noticeably cheaper across the border, which adds up fast on a Class A.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Scio?
Book early and you'll grab the best spots. New York State Parks (including Allegany and Letchworth) open reservations exactly nine months in advance through the ReserveAmerica system, and prime summer weekends at Cain Hollow, Red House, and Letchworth's loops 100 to 800 can sell out within minutes of release. For private parks like Breezy Point Campground in Scio or Evergreen Trails in Angelica, two to three months ahead is usually plenty outside of holiday weekends. Insider tip: if your dream site is taken, set up a cancellation alert, hundreds of NY State Parks reservations open up daily as plans change, especially 14 to 30 days out.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/allegany-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=31What are driving conditions like around Scio?
Driving around Scio is mostly relaxed rural cruising on routes like NY-19 and I-86 (the Southern Tier Expressway), with light traffic and forgiving lane widths perfect for first-time RV drivers. That said, the Allegany hills get steep in spots: expect winding grades through Allegany State Park and on back roads toward Letchworth, so take it slow on descents and use lower gears. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (Allegany County has one of the highest deer populations in New York) and prep for fast weather changes, including lake-effect snow squalls from November through March. Pro tip: avoid driving Allegany State Park's interior roads in the dark, they're narrow, unlit, and full of wildlife.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/511NY.htmlWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Scio?
Campgrounds near Scio offer a great mix of comfort and nature. Breezy Point Campground and Evergreen Trails in Angelica both provide full hookups (water, electric, sewer) on many sites, plus hot showers, dump stations, and laundry. Allegany State Park's Cain Hollow and Red House campgrounds have electric hookups, potable water spigots throughout the loops, restrooms with showers, and a centralized sanitary dump station, but no sewer at individual sites. Most spots include a fire ring and picnic table. Where to dump and fill water in Scio: Allegany State Park's dump stations are open to registered campers, and many private parks let day visitors dump for a small fee. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground since rural fill stations are sparse.
parks.ny.gov/parks/allegany/details.aspxWhat features and amenities come with a typical RV rental in Scio?
Most RVs on RVezy in Scio come fully equipped for a comfortable trip: a real bed (or multiple), a kitchen with fridge, stove, sink, and microwave, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via roof air conditioning and a furnace, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, and outdoor camp chairs. Generators are common in Class A and Class C motorhomes (handy when you're boondocking near Palmers Pond State Forest), while travel trailers run off shore power or batteries. WiFi varies by host but cell signal works well in most of Allegany County. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list, hosts spell out exactly what's included.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/camping/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options do Scio hosts typically offer?
Scio hosts make customizing your rig easy. Popular add-ons include linen and kitchen packages (usually $30 to $75), generator use (often $3 to $5 per hour beyond a daily allowance), bike racks, kayaks, outdoor grills, fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles billed at $0.30 to $0.50 each, while some offer unlimited mileage for an upfront fee. For pickup and dropoff, you can usually meet at the host's home base near Scio, Wellsville, or Belmont, or arrange delivery directly to a campground. Pro tip: book add-ons at checkout rather than at pickup, hosts often discount bundles when reserved in advance.
dos.ny.gov/consumer-protectionHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure: you pay the full booking amount through the platform at checkout using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid any hiccups, do a thorough walkaround at pickup with your host (photos and video are your friend), follow the mileage and generator rules in your listing, and return the RV clean with the tanks handled per the host's instructions. Pro tip: ask about the dump-station fee policy at checkout so there are no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs winter RV rental possible in Scio, and what should I know?
Yes, winter RV adventures in Scio are absolutely possible and surprisingly magical, with snowmobile trails, ice fishing at Cuba Lake, and 90 miles of groomed sled trails plus 44 winterized cabins inside Allegany State Park. Look for RVezy listings marked as four-season ready with heated holding tanks, insulated underbellies, and a furnace rated for sub-freezing temps. You'll want a campground with shore power hookups since running the furnace overnight drains house batteries fast, and Allegany State Park's Red House Area stays open year-round for exactly this reason. Pro tip: pack a heated water hose or fill the fresh tank and disconnect, freezing hoses are the number-one winter RV headache in Western New York.
