Campgrounds near South Cairo, New York
South Cairo sits in Greene County on the eastern edge of the Catskills, close to the town of Cairo and just off Route 23 and the New York State Thruway. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of the Catskill Forest Preserve, the Hudson River corridor, and the ski towns of Hunter and Windham. Albany International Airport lies roughly forty minutes north.
The area is a mix of small private campgrounds and larger state-run sites in the surrounding preserve. Closest options include Treetopia Campground, Whip-O-Will Campsite, Blue Mountain Campground, Blackthorne Campground, and Country Campsites at Michael Dees Motel. Private grounds tend to carry full or partial hookups, pools, and family activities, while state campgrounds inside the preserve lean toward wooded, more rustic sites with no electric hookups.
The Catskill Park covers roughly 700,000 acres of forest, streams, and peaks overseen by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, giving South Cairo-based campers ready access to hiking, paddling, and trout fishing without a long drive.
Things to do near South Cairo
Hiking is the main draw. The Catskill Escarpment above Haines Falls holds the trailhead network for Kaaterskill Falls, the tallest waterfall in New York State, plus the Escarpment Trail and the former Catskill Mountain House site with its wide Hudson Valley views. Devil's Path and the trails around Slide Mountain sit within an hour's drive for stronger hikers.
Families often pair a camping trip with Zoom Flume Water Park in East Durham, tubing on Esopus Creek in Phoenicia, or a ride on the Catskill Mountain Railroad. The Hudson River waterfront in Catskill village adds restaurants, boat launches, and the Thomas Cole National Historic Site.
Anglers can fish stocked trout streams throughout the preserve, and paddlers use North-South Lake and nearby ponds for non-motorized flatwater outings.

December - February

Most campgrounds in the region operate from roughly May through mid-October, with private grounds sometimes opening earlier in spring and holding into late fall. Winter closures are common, especially at higher elevations inside the Catskill Forest Preserve, where snow, ice, and limited services make RV camping impractical. Some state campgrounds open selectively in early spring for fishing season and in fall for hunting and foliage.
Summer weekends, particularly July and early August, are the busiest period. Sites at popular state campgrounds like North-South Lake fill early, and private grounds near South Cairo tighten up around July Fourth, Labor Day, and any Hunter Mountain event weekend. Fall foliage in mid-October is a secondary peak, driven by leaf-peeping traffic on Route 23A and the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.
Black bears are active in the preserve from spring through fall, and firewood must be sourced locally under New York State's invasive-species rules.

Wilson, and Mongaup Pond, are administered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and booked through the ReserveAmerica system. Reservations open up to nine months in advance, same-day bookings are accepted until 5 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are not permitted.
Private campgrounds near South Cairo, such as Treetopia Campground, Whip-O-Will Campsite, Blue Mountain Campground, Blackthorne Campground, and Country Campsites at Michael Dees Motel, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and foliage season, booking two to three months out is a safe target.
What to expect on arrival
Private grounds around South Cairo typically offer 30 and 50 amp hookups, dump stations, showers, a camp store, and family amenities like pools, playgrounds, or stocked ponds. Sites range from open, grassy pull-throughs to wooded back-ins. Cell service is generally usable but can drop off inside the preserve.
State campgrounds in the Catskill Forest Preserve are more rustic. Expect wooded sites with a picnic table and fire ring, flush toilets and hot showers at most locations, a trailer dump station, and no electrical hookups at sites such as North-South Lake. Length of stay is capped at fourteen nights, and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
RVers should plan for winding two-lane mountain roads once off the Thruway and fuel up before heading deep into the preserve.

To find a cheap RV rental in South Cairo, aim for midweek dates, book outside of fall foliage weekends (late September through mid-October), and filter for Instant Book listings. greatnortherncatskills.com/outdoors/rv-campingDo I need a special license to rent an RV in South Cairo?
Good news: a standard Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in South Cairo, New York for the vast majority of rigs on RVezy. New York only requires an R endorsement for motorhomes with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating over 26,000 pounds, and almost every rental on the platform (Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and most fifth wheels) sits comfortably under that threshold. RVezy approved drivers must generally be at least 25 years old, and ID verification happens right inside the platform. After that, your refund depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. The full policy is explained in the RVezy Help Center and shown during checkout. Pro tip: South Cairo is a popular fall foliage destination, so book your peak October dates early and use the grace period to lock in your favorite rig before someone else does.

dec.ny.gov/places/north-south-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaWhen is the best time to visit South Cairo in an RV?
The sweet spot for an RV trip in South Cairo is mid-May through mid-October, with two standout windows. Late June through August brings warm 75 to 85 degree days perfect for swimming at North-South Lake, while late September through mid-October delivers world-class fall foliage across the Catskill escarpment (this is the famous leaf-peeping season, so book early). Spring shoulder season (May) is quieter and great for waterfalls roaring with snowmelt at Kaaterskill Falls. Winters are cold (often in the 20s and snowy), but a few hosts offer four-season rigs for skiers headed to Hunter or Windham. Pro tip: the weekend after Columbus Day is peak color in the Northern Catskills, lock in your rental in July.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Catskills?
You're going to be fine, first time renting an RV in South Cairo is more common than you'd think, and the platform is designed for newcomers. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and waste tanks, so you won't be left guessing. For added comfort, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental (South Cairo has plenty), which drives much like an oversized van. The local roads around South Cairo are well-paved, and the New York State Thruway (I-87) at Exit 21 in Catskill is just minutes away for easy highway travel. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on quiet County Route 23B before tackling Route 23A's switchbacks.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region1What happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every booking in South Cairo includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy renter protection plan, so whether it is a flat tire on Route 23, a dead battery at North-South Lake, or a propane issue at a nearby campground, help is one phone call away. Your host is also a direct resource, most South Cairo owners live nearby and can often answer quick questions by text. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number and the RVezy support line to your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my South Cairo RV rental to Canada or other states?
Cross-border and interstate travel from a South Cairo RV rental is often possible, but it depends on the host and the insurance coverage on the specific listing. Travel into Canada (Montreal is just over 4 hours north) may be allowed if the host approves and the insurance extends across the border, so message the host before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Interstate trips are usually no problem: popular RV road trips from South Cairo include Vermont's Green Mountains (about 2 hours), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (about 1 hour), and the New Hampshire White Mountains (about 4 hours). Always confirm your route with the host before booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a South Cairo RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, so budgeting matters. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG), and Class B campervans are the fuel champs at 16 to 20 MPG. Gas in upstate Greene County tends to track close to the New York state average, typically a bit cheaper than New York City prices. A 300-mile loop from South Cairo (Hunter Mountain, Hudson, Windham, and back) in a Class C will run roughly 25 to 35 gallons. Pro tip: fill up in Catskill or Coxsackie before heading into the mountains, prices climb in resort towns like Hunter and Tannersville.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near South Cairo?
Book early, especially for summer weekends and fall foliage season. The most popular state campground near South Cairo, North-South Lake in Haines Falls, opens reservations 9 months in advance through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's ReserveAmerica system, and prime lakefront sites disappear within minutes. Private parks like Camp Catskills, Rip Van Winkle, and Earlton Hill often book 2 to 4 months ahead for July, August, and October weekends. Same-day reservations at New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) campgrounds are accepted online or by phone (1-800-456-2267) until 5 p.m. on arrival day, walk-ins are not permitted. Pro tip: target Sunday-through-Thursday stays for easier availability and lower nightly rates.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/northsouth-lake-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=5What are the driving conditions like around South Cairo?
South Cairo sits in a sweet spot: easy highway access via the New York State Thruway (I-87) Exit 21 in Catskill, and quick connections to mountain country via Routes 23 and 23A. Local roads are well-maintained, traffic is light outside of fall foliage Saturdays, and the area lacks the low bridges and tight turns of New York City. The main thing to watch is Route 23A west of Palenville, which climbs through Kaaterskill Clove with sharp switchbacks (taller rigs should descend in low gear). Winter can bring snow and ice from December through March. Pro tip: download the New York State Department of Transportation's 511NY app for real-time road conditions, especially before heading to Hunter Mountain or Windham.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near South Cairo?
Campgrounds near South Cairo run the full spectrum, so you can match amenities to your style. Full-hookup parks like Camp Catskills RV Park and Rip Van Winkle offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. State campgrounds like North-South Lake offer drive-in sites with picnic tables, fireplaces, flush toilets, hot showers, and a trailer dump station, but no individual hookups (generators allowed during five posted hours daily). For water fills and dumping between trips, the dump station at North-South Lake is open seasonally, and most private RV parks let non-guests use theirs for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the campground; mountain pull-offs rarely have spigots.
dec.ny.gov/places/north-south-lake-campground-and-day-use-areaWhat's inside a typical RV rental in South Cairo?
South Cairo RV rentals come surprisingly well-equipped for life off the grid in the Catskills. Most listings include a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette/sofa sleepers (sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, and cookware, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and seatbelts for highway travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, and a generator or solar setup for boondocking, and some hosts even add outdoor chairs, grills, and starter kits with linens and dish soap. Filter by Sleeps count on RVezy to match your group. Pro tip: ask your host whether the rig is four-season insulated if you're booking shoulder-season for chilly Catskill nights.
greatnortherncatskills.com/outdoors/rv-campingWhat add-ons and options can I get with my South Cairo RV rental?
South Cairo hosts on RVezy offer plenty of optional add-ons to make your Catskills trip smoother. Common ones include delivery and setup (often $1 to $3 per mile from the host's location), generator usage packages, propane refill, linen and kitchen kits, bike racks, outdoor furniture, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing a dog. Mileage policies vary, expect 100 to 150 included miles per day with around $0.35 to $0.50 per additional mile, or look for unlimited mileage listings. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near South Cairo, with same-day dropoff at the same location. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a propane top-off when booking, then your only job is showing up at North-South Lake ready to relax.
greatnortherncatskills.com/outdoors/rv-campingHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Booking your South Cairo RV rental is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card (never directly to the host), and your trip is confirmed once the host accepts or instantly if the listing has Instant Book enabled. A separate refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card near the start of your trip, with typical amounts ranging from about $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and it is released after dropoff assuming there is no damage or excessive cleaning. Keep all communication and payments on the platform, which is how you stay covered by the renter protection plan. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video at pickup and dropoff to make any deposit questions a quick resolution.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take a winter RV trip from South Cairo?
Yes, and a Catskills winter RV trip from South Cairo can be magical with the right rig. Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain ski areas are both within 30 minutes, and a few South Cairo hosts list four-season RVs with heated holding tanks, extra insulation, and electric hookups designed for cold weather. To make winter work, plan to stay at a park that offers winter shore power (Camp Catskills and a handful of others stay open into late fall), keep tanks above quarter-full, and use the furnace plus a small electric heater on shore power. Daytime highs in January average 30 to 35 degrees, with nights in the teens. Pro tip: filter for four-season or winter-ready listings and message hosts directly to confirm cold-weather setup before booking.
