Campgrounds and RV parks near Walton Park, NY

Hiking is the headline activity. Harriman State Park alone holds over 200 miles of marked trails, and Wawayanda State Park adds roughly 60 miles of trails including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail with views from Pinwheel Vista and Wawayanda Mountain. Bear Mountain State Park, Sterling Forest, and Norvin Green State Forest add more ridgeline routes. Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati inside Harriman have designated swimming beaches, and Wawayanda Lake supports paddling, fishing, and swimming. Winter brings ice fishing and cross-country skiing on many trails. Off-trail options include West Point, Storm King, Hudson Valley farm stands, and the KOA shuttle route into New York City from Newburgh.

The main camping season runs from spring through mid-fall. State-park campgrounds in the region, including Beaver Pond in Harriman and the sites at Wawayanda (open April 1 through October 31), operate on a seasonal calendar that generally opens in spring and closes after the fall foliage window. Summer weekends draw large groups from the New York metro area, and Beaver Pond in particular fills fast on weekends with families from the city. Early fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel: warm days, cool nights, thinning bugs, and peak leaf color across the Hudson Highlands in mid- to late October. Spring can be wet, and trails at higher elevations stay muddy into May. Winter camping is limited. Black Bear Campground stays open year round with full hookups, but state-park campgrounds close and many roads through the parks see reduced services. Snow, ice, and short daylight hours are the main planning constraints from December through February.

Hookups vary widely. Black Bear Campground offers full hookups with 50-amp service, and the Newburgh KOA provides similar RV amenities. Beaver Pond in Harriman accepts trailers and RVs up to 30 feet on select sites, but the campground has no electrical hookups; a dump station, showers, and laundry are on site. Camp Wyanokie is tent-oriented and does not accommodate RVs. Rules differ by park. Beaver Pond prohibits alcohol and does not permit pets in the campground or at Lake Welch, which is important to know before arriving. Cell coverage is generally reliable in the Orange County valleys and weaker deep inside Harriman and Norvin Green. Expect wildlife: black bears are active across the region, so food and coolers should be stored inside the RV or in provided lockers, and grills cleaned after use.
