Campgrounds near Ashley, North Dakota
Ashley sits in McIntosh County in the rolling prairie of south-central North Dakota, well positioned for RV trips built around small lakes, wildlife viewing, and quiet rural roads. The area draws walleye, northern pike, and perch anglers, along with families looking for uncrowded state parks close to the South Dakota border.
The closest full-service option is Doyle Memorial State Park, a small park on a peninsula in Green Lake southeast of Wishek that offers RV power sites, tenting, showers, a boat ramp, and a fishing dock. Beaver Lake State Park, also near Wishek, adds a modern electric campground laid out on the loop of a former horse racing track, three seasonal cabins, and more than five miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails.
North and east of Ashley, Edgeley Campground provides a stopover along US-281, while West Side Mobile Court and Campground offers longer-term hookups in town. Day-trippers commonly pair a campground stay with a visit to Whitestone Battlefield, a state historic site marking the September 1863 clash between US cavalry under General Alfred Sully and an encampment of Yanktonai, Dakota, and Lakota people.
Things to do around Ashley
Fishing anchors most trips. Doyle Memorial State Park sits on Green Lake with walleye, northern pike, and perch, and Beaver Lake State Park adds bluegill and crappie, with ice fishing common in winter. Both parks have boat ramps and docks.
On land, Beaver Lake State Park's non-motorized trail system covers 5.4 miles of loops open to hiking and biking, plus a self-guided nature trail. Bird watchers can spot prairie chickens, turkeys, and deer, along with summer species such as kingbirds, meadowlarks, and yellow warblers.
History stops round out the itinerary. Whitestone Battlefield preserves 14 interpretive panels, two monuments honoring the Native and soldier dead, and a fieldstone shelter overlooking a freshwater lake, and the surrounding wetlands attract migratory birds of the Central Flyway.

The camping window in this part of North Dakota is short. Beaver Lake State Park operates as a seasonal park, with camping, picnicking, and water-based activities available from mid-May through Labor Day, with a small shoulder into fall used mainly by hunters. Doyle Memorial Park's visitor center runs Thursday through Sunday from mid-March through December and is closed in January and February, though the grounds see very light use outside the warm months.
Summer is peak season. June brings the wettest weather of the year and the most active bird life, while July and August deliver the warmest days and reliable fishing. Reservable state-park sites and cabins book out well in advance for weekends, especially around holidays.
Fall is dry, cool, and popular with pheasant hunters who use Beaver Lake as a base. Winter is severe: sub-zero wind chills are routine, most park facilities close, and Whitestone Battlefield remains open year round but has no snow removal service.
How to book campgrounds near Ashley
North Dakota state parks, including Beaver Lake, use the central reservation system operated by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department at reserveNDparks.com or by phone at 800-807-4723. Standard campsites can be booked up to 95 days ahead of the arrival date, while the Hoberg, Homestead, and Pioneer cabins can be reserved up to 365 days out and require a two-night minimum. Check-in is at 4:00 pm and checkout is at 3:00 pm, and pets are allowed on leash. A daily or annual park entrance permit is required in addition to any camping fee.
Doyle Memorial Park is no longer part of the state system. It became property of the City of Wishek in 2017 and is managed by the Wishek Park Board, so RV reservations are handled by phone rather than online.
Smaller options such as Edgeley Campground and West Side Mobile Court and Campground are typically booked by phone with the operator. For summer weekends, contact any of these sites several weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a quiet, rural experience rather than a resort. Beaver Lake accommodates RVs up to about 40 feet with electric hookups, a dump station, clean bathhouses with hot showers, and pull-through sites, though level yard space around individual pads is limited. Cell service can be spotty, which matters for travelers planning to work on the road.
Doyle Memorial has a smaller footprint with RV power sites, tenting, showers, a playground, a fish cleaning station, and a swimming area. Facilities are older but functional, and site 1 is nearly surrounded by water.
The surrounding landscape is open prairie, so wind is a constant factor when setting up awnings and canopies. Insects are usually kept down by the breeze, and sunsets across the rolling farmland are a common highlight. Fuel, groceries, and repairs are limited, so stock up in Ashley, Wishek, or Edgeley before heading to a campground.
