Campgrounds and RV parks near Franklin Furnace, OH

The Ohio River drives most local recreation. Anglers target largemouth, smallmouth, and white bass, and the river is popular for boating, swimming, and wildlife viewing, including resident bald eagles. Barge-watching and evening walks along the riverbank are common at riverfront campgrounds. Inland, Shawnee State Forest offers more than 60,000 acres of ridge-top and hollow trails, backpack loops, bridle paths, and a mountain-biking system. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park adds about 33 miles of self-guided hiking on a 225-acre lake stocked with bass, bluegill, crappie, and trout, plus a swimming pool with a waterslide, tennis and basketball courts, and an 18-hole mini-golf course open April through October. Families also visit the Portsmouth Floodwall Murals, Portsmouth Raceway Park, the Greenup Locks and Dam, and Huntington, West Virginia, for shopping and dining.

Peak camping season along this stretch of the Ohio River runs April through October, when temperatures are mild to warm and park amenities are fully staffed. Spring brings wildflowers and dogwood bloom in Shawnee State Forest, along with the wettest months of the year and higher river levels. Book weekends four to eight weeks ahead in May and June once school schedules line up with warmer weather. Summer is peak family season. Expect hot, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and busy weekends at KOA properties, marina campgrounds, and state parks. Weekdays offer better availability than weekends, and holiday weekends fill first. Fall is often the best window for RV renters: cooler nights, thinner crowds, strong hardwood color through October, and generally drier weather. Winter camping is possible but limited. Shawnee State Park keeps 20 campsites, the group camping area, and two camper cabins available walk-in only from November through March, with no reservations accepted, no electric hookups, and the dump station running without water. Kentucky State Parks also warn that water may not be available at campgrounds during freezing weather.

Terrain along the river is flat and easy to navigate for larger rigs, while state-forest access roads wind through steep Appalachian foothills with tight curves. Big-rig drivers should check site dimensions and grades carefully; some Greenbo Lake sites have steep pads and compact spacing that do not suit long trailers. Riverfront campgrounds typically offer full hookups, boat access, and pet-friendly sites. State park campgrounds range from primitive tent sites to electric and full-hookup RV sites, with dump stations, showers, and laundry available in season. Cell service is generally reliable along the river corridor and weaker deep inside Shawnee State Forest. Bring layers for shoulder-season nights, insect repellent for summer evenings near the water, and firewood purchased locally. Kentucky State Parks prohibit the importation of firewood from outside the state to slow the spread of emerald ash borer; firewood is sold on site.
