Campgrounds near Ironton, Ohio
Ironton sits on the Ohio River in Lawrence County, at the southern tip of Ohio where the state meets Kentucky and West Virginia. The city is home to the Ironton Ranger District of Wayne National Forest, which covers land across Lawrence, Scioto, Gallia, and Jackson counties. Most RV travelers use Ironton as a base for the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area, roughly 6.5 miles north via State Route 93, and for lake and river camping across the tri-state region.
Campground options near town cover the full range. Little Bear Island Campground and Holiday Point Marina and Campground offer waterfront sites along the Ohio River corridor. Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday sits south across the river in Kentucky and provides full-hookup pull-throughs and cabins. Greenbo Lake State Resort Park adds a lodge, marina, and lake-focused camping in Greenup County, Kentucky, and Valley Breeze RV Campground rounds out the local RV options.
The surrounding terrain is rolling Appalachian foothills, mostly hardwood forest cut by creeks, iron-furnace ruins, and small farm valleys.
Things to do near Ironton
Lake Vesuvius is the anchor attraction. The 143-acre lake sits inside a 1,200-acre recreation complex with more than 40 miles of trails, a beach and swim area, fishing for bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill, and the historic Vesuvius Iron Furnace at the base of the dam. A hiking trail connects the campgrounds to the lake, and the Lake Shore Trail runs an 8-mile loop, with shorter spurs leading to Rock House Cave.
Off-highway vehicle riders have three trail systems on the Ironton Ranger District: Hanging Rock (26 miles), Pine Creek (about 20 miles), and Superior (16.5 miles). Across the river in Kentucky, Greenbo Lake supports bass fishing, an annually stocked trout population, a swimming pool with a waterslide, tennis, and miniature golf. Families staying at Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday can day-trip to Huntington, West Virginia and Ashland, Kentucky.

Wayne National Forest is open year-round, though developed sites at Lake Vesuvius run seasonally and have opened in mid-April in recent years. The OHV trail systems are seasonally closed from winter to early spring and typically operate from mid-April through mid-December. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild temperatures, lower humidity, and strong foliage color from mid-October.
Summer brings warm, humid weather and the highest demand for lake and river sites. July is the wettest and most humid month, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Confirm the current status of Lake Vesuvius boating and swimming with the ranger district before booking, since access has been affected by dam and waterline projects in recent seasons.
Winter is short but cold. Kentucky State Parks warns that water service is not guaranteed at campgrounds during freezing months, so cold-weather travelers to Greenbo Lake should call the park to confirm hookups.
How to book campgrounds near Ironton
Wayne National Forest sites at Lake Vesuvius, including Iron Ridge and Oak Hill, are reserved through Recreation.gov. Some first-come, first-served sites are available, reservations must be made at least four days before arrival, and stays are capped at 14 days within any 30-day period. The State of Ohio Buckeye Pass is not accepted at Wayne National Forest fee sites.
Greenbo Lake State Resort Park bookings go through the Kentucky State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance and at least one day before arrival, with a two-night minimum on peak-season Friday and Saturday arrivals. Sites are capped at 8 occupants and 2 units.
Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday, Little Bear Island Campground, Holiday Point Marina and Campground, and Valley Breeze RV Campground are private parks. Book each directly through its website or by phone, and reserve full-hookup and pull-through sites well ahead for summer holiday weekends.
What to expect
Sites near Ironton mix rustic forest camping with full-service RV parks. Iron Ridge offers RV sites with electric hookups and shared or individual water spigots, a dump station, flush toilets, showers, and drinking water. Oak Hill has been recently renovated with electric hookups, flush and vault toilets, showers, water hookups, and a dump station. Cell coverage in the forest can be spotty, and the Buckeye Pass is not honored.
Ashland / Huntington West KOA Holiday offers full-hookup pull-throughs, 30 and 50 amp service, a swimming pool, laundry, and camping cabins. Greenbo Lake has a 63-site campground with primitive, electric-and-water, and full-hookup options, restrooms, showers, a dump station, and free Wi-Fi. Payment is simple and secure through RVezy, you pay the rental total when you book and the host receives funds after your trip starts. Each host sets their own security deposit, listed clearly on the listing page, and it's pre-authorized (not charged) on your card a few days before pickup, then released after a smooth return. To keep the deposit return easy, do the pre-trip walkaround with your host, photograph the RV inside and out, and return it with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement. Pro tip: dump the tanks at Iron Ridge's on-site dump station before drop-off, returning with a clean rig is the single biggest factor in getting your full deposit back quickly.
