Campgrounds near Bedford, Pennsylvania
Bedford sits in south-central Pennsylvania's Ridge and Valley region, along the US 30 corridor between the Allegheny Front and the Tuscarora range. The area combines a historic downtown with easy access to public forest and lake recreation, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers routing between Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and the Maryland panhandle.
The closest full-service option is Friendship Village Campground and RV Park, followed by Choice Camping Court and Natures Getaway RV Park and Campground. Larger natural sites cluster to the west at Shawnee State Park Campground, which sits about five miles from Bedford along US 30. Breezewood Proving Grounds rounds out the nearby options along the I-70/I-76 junction to the east.
Most RV renters use Bedford as either a weekend destination for lake and forest recreation or as a mid-trip stopover on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Sites near town tend to offer higher hookup counts and pull-through access, while the state park delivers a wooded lakeside experience with more limited hookups.
Things to do around Bedford
Shawnee State Park is the main outdoor draw. A focal point of the park is the 451-acre Shawnee Lake, which supports swimming, boating, and warm-water fishing. Peak-season activities include nature walks, self-guided hikes, biking, swimming, boating, disc golf, and fishing, while the off-season adds snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, sledding, hunting, and ice skating.
Downtown Bedford preserves a compact colonial-era street grid with independent shops, a farmers market in season, and the Fort Bedford Museum. Old Bedford Village recreates an 18th-century settlement and runs seasonal events aimed at families.
Drivers heading north can reach Blue Knob State Park and the Lincoln Highway Experience within roughly an hour. For a shorter outing, the covered bridges of Bedford County are signed on a self-guided driving route that works well as a half-day loop from any nearby campground.

The main RV season runs from mid-spring through late fall. At Shawnee State Park, the camping season begins the second Friday in April and ends in late December, so shoulder-season trips are viable if the RV is winterized for cold nights. Private parks near town generally follow a similar April-to-late-October window, with a few offering limited winter service.
Summer is the busiest period. During the summer peak, weekly Friday-to-Friday rentals apply to some cabin units, and the peak rental period runs from the second Friday in June through the day before the third Friday in August. Standard campsite stays are capped at 14 consecutive nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and Saturday-night reservations require a two-night minimum during summer.
Fall brings foliage color across the Allegheny ridges, typically peaking in mid-October. Winter access to Shawnee is possible for day use, but overnight camping tapers off after Thanksgiving and services shift to first-come or closed status.
How to book a campground near Bedford
Shawnee State Park reservations are handled through the Pennsylvania State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least three days ahead of arrival and can be booked up to eleven months in advance, which matters for holiday weekends and peak summer Fridays. Advance reservations are required, and group tenting can be booked by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757).
Private parks such as Friendship Village Campground and RV Park, Choice Camping Court, and Natures Getaway RV Park and Campground take reservations directly by phone or their own websites, and most accept RV-rental delivery. Book summer weekends and Bedford Fall Foliage Festival dates several months ahead.
Breezewood Proving Grounds functions as a convenient overnight for travelers moving along the Turnpike; confirm availability directly with the operator before arrival rather than assuming walk-in space.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of open, grassy commercial parks near town and shaded, wooded sites inside the state park. Shawnee State Park Campground has over 200 individual sites of varying sizes with a maximum RV length of 45 feet, split across six loops; 15 sites offer full hookups and 98 have electric only. A sanitary dump station and centrally located shower houses with flush toilets, showers, and utility sinks are available.
Pets are permitted at designated campsites for a fee, so RV renters traveling with dogs should reserve a pet-friendly section specifically. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so download maps and reservation confirmations before arrival.
Quiet hours, alcohol rules, and visitor windows are enforced in state park sites; private campgrounds generally set their own house rules, which are shared at check-in.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Bedford, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Bedford, PA?
RV rental in Bedford is one of the smartest ways to explore the Allegheny Mountains without overspending. Expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for a travel trailer, $150 to $250 for a Class C motorhome, and $200 to $350 for a Class A. Because hosts set their own pricing on RVezy, you can filter by budget and find cheap RV rental in Bedford that matches your trip length and group size. Save more by traveling midweek, booking shoulder season (late April or October), or choosing a travel trailer if you already have a tow vehicle. Many Bedford-area hosts offer multi-night discounts for 5+ day bookings, perfect for pairing the Lincoln Highway with Shawnee State Park in one trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bedford%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Bedford, Pennsylvania?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Bedford, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes and travel trailers used recreationally, even for larger Class A rigs. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork to fax or notarize. Visiting from outside the US? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club before flying in. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the whole verification step wraps up, often the same day.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Bedford RV rental?
Yes, every RV booked through RVezy in Bedford includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Pennsylvania Turnpike with peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), and the plan covers eligible accidental damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside help is a phone call away if you get a flat on Route 30 or need a jump at a Shawnee State Park campsite. The plan is built specifically for peer-to-peer RV rental in Bedford and removes the biggest worry for first-time renters. You can review coverage details on the RVezy insurance and protection page before you book.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Bedford RV trip plans change?
Booking your Bedford RV trip is low-risk thanks to RVezy's cancellation policy, which is set by RVezy (not individual hosts) and applies to every reservation. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and refund eligibility then depends on how far out your trip start date is. You'll see the exact terms during checkout, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip if plans shift, which matters in the Alleghenies where winter storms can roll in fast. Go ahead and lock in that Shawnee Lake weekend or covered-bridge tour with confidence; full details are in the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Bedford, PA?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Bedford is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) on board. Bedford County is great for pup parents: Shawnee State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and in designated pet-friendly camping loops, Buchanan's Birthplace State Park has open meadows for sniffing, and most private campgrounds welcome well-behaved dogs. Downtown Bedford's Pitt Street shops and several patios are dog-friendly too. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, and bring a tie-out and water bowl since lakeside campsites can get warm in July and August.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/ShawneeStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Bedford?
Yes, RV delivery in Bedford is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip towing or driving a big rig down Route 220. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV directly at Shawnee State Park, Friendship Village Campground, or even a private driveway, then walk you through every system: water, propane, awning, slide-outs and generator. Delivery fees usually depend on distance from Bedford borough, and some hosts include free delivery within a set radius. Just use the Delivery filter when browsing, then message the host with your destination address. By the time you arrive at the campsite, your motorhome rental in Bedford will be leveled, plugged in, and ready for marshmallows.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/ShawneeStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on a Bedford RV trip?
Mileage is flexible on RVezy: hosts set their own daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some Bedford listings even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great for road-trippers. From Bedford you're well positioned to roam: Pittsburgh is about 100 miles west, Gettysburg roughly 90 miles east, Ohiopyle State Park and Fallingwater around 65 to 75 miles southwest, Washington DC about 150 miles southeast, and Niagara Falls roughly 270 miles north. Check the listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you're planning a big loop, message the host to ask about a custom mileage package. The scenic Lincoln Highway (Route 30) east through Breezewood is prettier than the Turnpike and adds barely any time.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Bedford%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhere are the best campgrounds near Bedford, PA for an RV trip?
Bedford is surrounded by excellent campgrounds for RV camping in Bedford. Shawnee State Park Campground in Schellsburg (about 10 miles west) offers nearly 300 sites along Shawnee Lake with electric hookups, hot showers, and a sandy swim beach. Friendship Village Campground & RV Park, just minutes from downtown Bedford, has full hookups, a pool, and easy Turnpike access. Bedford/Breezewood KOA in Breezewood offers pull-through sites and is great for one-night stopovers. Blue Knob State Park (about 25 miles north) is rustic and quiet, perfect for cooler-weather camping. For state park bookings, reserve through the Pennsylvania DCNR system up to 12 months ahead, especially for summer weekends, which fill fast.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Bedford, PA?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot for an RV rental in Bedford, with the peak being late September through mid-October when the Allegheny Mountains turn red and gold. Summer highs sit in the low 80s F with cool 60 F nights, perfect for campfires at Shawnee Lake. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and fewer crowds, while fall offers the famous covered-bridge driving tour at its most photogenic. Winters are cold (highs in the 30s F, snow common) and most state park campgrounds close, though a few hosts offer winter-ready rigs for ski trips to nearby Blue Knob All Seasons Resort. Book your foliage-season trip by July, fall weekends sell out early.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never rented an RV before. Is Bedford a good place to start?
Bedford is a fantastic spot for first time renting an RV. The roads are wide and well-maintained, traffic is light outside the I-70/I-76 Breezewood interchange, and campgrounds like Shawnee State Park have pull-through sites that don't require backing in. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, the propane system, awning, and dumping. You can message the host with questions before booking, and 24/7 roadside help is just a tap away. Choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, stick to one campground for two nights, and you'll feel like a pro by day three. Bonus: downtown Bedford has easy parking, so a grocery run is stress-free.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I break down during my Bedford RV trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, climbing Allegheny Mountain, or parked at Blue Knob. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Cell coverage is solid along I-76, I-99, and US-30 around Bedford, with a few dead zones in the deeper hollows of Buchanan State Forest, so downloading offline maps is smart. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their RV. Save both numbers in your phone at pickup and you'll never feel stranded.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trip routes from Bedford, PA?
An RV road trip from Bedford puts you within striking distance of incredible destinations. Head west on US-30 (the historic Lincoln Highway) to Ohiopyle State Park and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater (about 65 to 75 miles). Drive east on US-30 to Gettysburg National Military Park (about 90 miles) for Civil War history. Go north on I-99 to Raystown Lake (about 45 miles) for boating and lakeside camping. Loop south into Maryland's Rocky Gap State Park (about 35 miles) for mountain lake views. For a bigger adventure, Niagara Falls is about 270 miles north. Travel into Canada is possible with the right paperwork; message your host first. Travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals. Avoid the Turnpike during Friday rush, take Route 30 instead.
visitpa.com/What kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Budget realistically and you'll cruise happily. Class A motorhomes typically get 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C around 10 to 14 MPG, campervans (Class B) 16 to 20 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer roughly 10 to 13 MPG. Pennsylvania gas averages around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon (diesel slightly higher), so a 300-mile loop from Bedford to Ohiopyle and back in a Class C might run $90 to $120 in fuel. Use the GasBuddy app, fill up in Bedford or Somerset where prices tend to beat Turnpike plazas, and drive 60 to 62 mph for the best mileage. Pro tip: many Bedford-area Sheetz and Pilot stations have RV-friendly pumps with high canopies, easy in, easy out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bedford?
For the most popular spots, book early. Pennsylvania State Park campgrounds (Shawnee, Blue Knob, Buchanan's Birthplace) accept reservations up to 12 months in advance through the DCNR reservation system, and summer weekends and October (peak foliage) often fill the moment they open. Private parks like Friendship Village and Bedford/Breezewood KOA usually take bookings 6 to 12 months out and have more last-minute flexibility. For a spontaneous trip, midweek arrivals in May, June, or September almost always score a site. If Shawnee is full, check Cowans Gap State Park (about 30 miles east); it's a stunner and slightly less famous, which means it books up just a little later.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Reservations/Pages/default.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Bedford, PA?
Driving an RV in Bedford is genuinely manageable, even for newer renters. The terrain is rolling Allegheny Mountain country with some sustained grades on I-76 (Allegheny Mountain Tunnel area) and US-220, so go easy on the throttle uphill and use low gears downhill to save your brakes. The Breezewood I-70/I-76 interchange is famously busy with trucks, plan to pass through outside of rush hour. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most leisure RV trips stick to April through November. Watch for low-clearance underpasses on older Route 30 sections (most are 12'+ but always check your RV's height at pickup). Pro tip: the PennDOT 511PA app gives real-time traffic, road work, and weather alerts statewide.
511pa.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Bedford?
Campgrounds around Bedford run the full spectrum, so you can match the experience to your style. Shawnee State Park offers electric (20/30/50 amp) sites, modern restrooms with hot showers, a sanitary dump station, and a potable water fill near the campground entrance, but no individual water or sewer at sites. Friendship Village and Bedford/Breezewood KOA offer full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Most have on-site dump stations free for guests; non-guests can usually dump for a small fee. Fill your fresh tank before leaving the host's home or at the campground spigot. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter, you'll be ready for any site in Bedford County.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Bedford?
Most RVs on RVezy come trip-ready so you can focus on enjoying Bedford. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfy sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi and a generator are common add-ons, great for boondocking in Buchanan State Forest where hookups don't exist. A campervan rental in Bedford keeps things simple and nimble, while a Class A gives you full residential comfort. Check each listing's amenity list, and message the host if you need something specific like a roof rack for kayaks to paddle Shawnee Lake.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/BuchananStateForest/Pages/default.aspxWhat add-ons and pickup options do Bedford RV hosts offer?
Bedford hosts make trip planning easy with a menu of useful add-ons: bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, outdoor camp setups (chairs, table, grill), generators, bike racks, kayak/SUP carriers, fishing gear, and even pre-stocked propane. Pet packages are common too. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Bedford borough, but many offer delivery to Shawnee State Park, Friendship Village, or your vacation rental, often within a 25 to 50 mile radius for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary by listing (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day, with unlimited-mileage options available). Pro tip: bundle delivery + setup + linens for your first trip; you'll arrive, the RV will be ready, and you can start exploring Old Bedford Village the same afternoon.
discoverbedfordcounty.com/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking (no cash to the host), which covers the rental rate, service fees, your chosen protection plan, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately before the trip starts; the exact amount is shown on the listing and during checkout, and it's released after drop-off assuming no damage or policy violations. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and drop-off (photos help), respect the mileage and generator-hours limits, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane level, and dump tanks if required. Keep all gas, dump, and propane receipts from your Bedford trip, they're handy if any question comes up later.
