Camping near Black Lick, Pennsylvania
Black Lick sits in Burrell Township, Indiana County, in the Laurel Highlands region of western Pennsylvania. The village lies along Black Lick Creek and marks the western trailhead of the Ghost Town Trail, a 36-mile crushed-limestone rail-trail that runs east to Ebensburg and connects at Saylor Park to the Hoodlebug Trail heading north toward Indiana, PA. The surrounding countryside is a mix of forested ridges, reclaimed coal country, and small reservoirs, which gives RV travellers a good spread of lake, creek, and woodland campgrounds within an easy drive.
Most overnight options fall into three groups: Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, county-run and municipal recreation areas, and privately owned RV parks. Keystone State Park, roughly a half-hour southwest, is the closest full state-park campground and the anchor site for the area. Smaller privately run parks such as Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Wheel-in Campground, and Silver Canoe Campground fill in shorter-drive options closer to Black Lick itself.
RV travellers typically use Black Lick as a base for lake fishing, cycling the rail-trails, and day trips to Pittsburgh-area attractions about an hour to the west.
Things to do around Black Lick
The Ghost Town Trail is the main draw. It begins at Saylor Park in Black Lick and runs about 36 miles east to Ebensburg on a crushed-limestone surface suitable for bikes, strollers, and easy walking, with interpretive stops at former mining towns and the preserved Eliza Furnace near Vintondale.
Water recreation centres on nearby lakes. Keystone Lake at Keystone State Park covers 78 acres and offers warm and cold water fishing, with a public boat launch restricted to electric motors. The 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir, accessed through Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, adds a swim beach, boat launch, fishing pier, and larger open water for kayaking and fishing.
Hikers can explore Keystone State Park's six miles of trails, which are open year-round for hiking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, as well as the Blacklick Valley Natural Area nearby.

The main RV camping season in this part of Pennsylvania generally runs from early April into late October. At Keystone State Park, tent and trailer sites are available from the first Friday of April, and shower facilities may not be available after October 1, with the campground closing the third Sunday in October.
Summer is the busiest stretch. July and August bring warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and the highest demand for lakeside sites at Keystone State Park and Quemahoning Family Recreational Area. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book out earliest and should be reserved months in advance. Spring and early fall are quieter, with cooler nights and fewer bugs.
Winter camping is limited. The 11 modern cabins at Keystone State Park remain available year-round, and the park's trails stay open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing when conditions cooperate. Note that Keystone Lake is scheduled to be drawn down after Labor Day 2026 through mid-October 2027 for dredging, and the swimming area will be closed for the 2027 season, though the campground, cabins, and trails will remain open.

How to book campgrounds near Black Lick
Pennsylvania state park sites, including Lakeside at Keystone State Park, are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance and must be booked at least three days ahead of arrival. For popular summer weekends, book as early as the 11-month window allows, and consider the pet-friendly Hillside loop if Lakeside is full.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area uses its own online reservation system through Firefly Reservations, with a small processing fee per booking. Same-day reservations must be made by phone to the park office.
Smaller private parks such as Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Wheel-in Campground, and Silver Canoe Campground are typically booked directly by phone or through the operator's own website.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the area range from electric-only RV pads to primitive tent spots. Keystone State Park offers tent and trailer sites in both Lakeside and Hillside campgrounds, plus modern cabins, cottages, and yurts, with 30 or 50-amp electric available and back-in sites on gravel, asphalt, or grass. Both campgrounds share a modern bathhouse and a sanitary dump station, and water faucets are accessible throughout the campground rather than at individual sites.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area has 28 RV sites, each with a firm packed pad, fire ring, picnic table, and 110V / 30-amp electric service. Nine sites also offer 50-amp service. There is no water hookup at individual sites, but a sewage dump, water access, and shower house are a short walk away.
Alcohol is prohibited in Pennsylvania state parks and at Quemahoning, and firewood should be sourced locally to help limit the spread of forest pests.
