Campgrounds and RV parks near Boswell, PA

Water recreation drives most itineraries. Quemahoning Reservoir supports fishing, kayaking, and small-boat use, with a swim beach, fishing pier, playground, and sports fields at the Quemahoning Family Recreational Area day-use area. Laurel Hill State Park, about 20 minutes southwest, adds a 63-acre lake with swimming, paddling, and trout fishing, plus multi-use trails for hiking and mountain biking. History stops are close at hand. The Flight 93 National Memorial sits near Shanksville, and the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site in Somerset County marks the site of the 2002 miner rescue. The Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail is accessible from Meyersdale to the south, and Seven Springs and Hidden Valley resorts add mountain biking, ziplines, and lift-served activities during the warm months.

The camping window in this part of Pennsylvania is short. Most private campgrounds around Boswell operate seasonally from roughly mid-April through mid-October, and the Quemahoning Family Recreational Area follows a similar May through October schedule. Winter camping options are limited, and many gates close once temperatures drop. Late May through early October is the primary season. Summer weekends and holidays including Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book earliest, especially electric sites and waterfront pads. Elevation near 2,000 feet keeps summer nights cooler than lowland Pennsylvania, and campers should pack for 15 to 20 degree overnight drops from daytime highs. Fall brings reliable foliage color across the Laurel Ridge, typically peaking from early through mid-October. Spring is green and wet, with rain days concentrated in April and May. Winter delivers steady snow and freezing temperatures, and many small campgrounds and state park loops shut down or convert to limited-service operation.

Approach roads are mostly paved two-lane routes off PA 31, PA 601, and PA 985. Grades are moderate but curvy, and larger rigs should plan daylight arrivals. Cell coverage is spotty once you leave the main corridors, so download offline maps before turning onto campground access roads. Site surfaces are typically packed gravel or grass, and terrain is rarely perfectly level, so leveling blocks are worth carrying. Hookup availability varies. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area provides 30-amp electric at RV sites with a firm packed pad, fire ring, and picnic table, though water and sewer hookups are not at each site. Expect a shower house rather than in-site bathrooms at most locations. Bears and other wildlife are active. Store food inside the RV, keep coolers latched, and follow posted quiet hours.
