Camping near Brownstown, Pennsylvania
Brownstown is a small borough in Cambria County in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, sitting on a hill just northwest of Johnstown above the Conemaugh River valley. RV travelers use it as a base for exploring the surrounding ridge-and-valley country, the Allegheny Front, and the reservoirs and state game lands that ring the Johnstown area.
The campgrounds within easy driving distance range from lake-focused public recreation areas to family-owned RV parks with full hookups. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area sits on a large reservoir south of town and draws boaters and anglers. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Boyers Pond Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Woodland Campsites Inc round out the closer private options, each with a different mix of shaded sites, pond access, and hookup levels.
Most parks in this region are seasonal, running from spring through fall, with a smaller number of year-round sites. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Johnstown and thinner in the surrounding hollows and ridgelines.
Things to do around Brownstown
The Johnstown area anchors most day trips. The Johnstown Flood National Memorial and the Johnstown Inclined Plane are close by, and the Path of the Flood and Ghost Town trails give riders and hikers rail-trail miles through the Conemaugh Gap. State game lands and Prince Gallitzin State Park to the north add hiking, paddling, and fishing options.
At Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, the reservoir supports boating, kayaking, and warm-water fishing. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing and Boyers Pond Campground are set up for on-site angling, while Rainbow Woods Campground and Woodland Campsites Inc lean toward family activities, playgrounds, and quiet wooded sites. Laurel Hill and Ohiopyle state parks, with whitewater on the Youghiogheny, are within an easy drive south.

The camping season in this part of the Alleghenies runs roughly from mid-April through late October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Elevations around Brownstown sit near 1,400 to 2,000 feet, so nights stay cooler than in the Ohio and Susquehanna lowlands, which is a benefit in July and August but means frost is possible into May and again by mid-October.
Spring is wet, with May and June among the rainiest months of the year. Trails soften and reservoir levels run high. Summer brings warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and the busiest weekends at private campgrounds and the Quemahoning reservoir. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is common for holiday weekends.
Fall is the sweet spot for many RV renters. Foliage typically peaks from early to mid October across Cambria and Somerset counties, temperatures are cool but comfortable, and bugs and crowds thin out. Most private parks close for the season by the end of October, and public sites reduce services in winter.
How to book a site near Brownstown
Private campgrounds near Brownstown, including Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Boyers Pond Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Woodland Campsites Inc, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Deposits are typical for weekend and holiday stays, and many parks require a two-night minimum on Saturdays in summer.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area is operated by the Cambria Somerset Authority and handles camping through its own reservation channel rather than the state system. Pennsylvania State Park sites in the wider region, such as Prince Gallitzin and Laurel Hill, are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation service up to eleven months in advance and fill quickly for summer weekends.
Confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and pet rules before booking, since site dimensions and amperage vary widely between parks.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Brownstown is hilly, with narrow river valleys, sharp grades, and older two-lane roads. Larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs should plan routes carefully and avoid shortcut roads through the ridges. Approaches from US 219 and US 22 are the most RV-friendly.
Campground layouts vary. Reservoir and pond sites tend to be open with gravel pads, while wooded parks offer more shade but tighter turns and lower branches. Full hookups are common at private parks, while public and reservoir-side sites more often provide water and electric only, with a central dump station.
Come prepared for cool nights even in summer, biting insects near still water in June and July, and quick-moving thunderstorms. Black bears are present in Cambria and Somerset counties, so food and trash should be stored inside the RV or in provided bear boxes.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brownstown%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Brownstown, PA?
Good news for first-time renters: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Brownstown, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for any motorhome or travel trailer you will find on RVezy, including Class A, Class B campervans, and Class C motorhomes. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 years or older, and your ID is verified securely through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP), which usually costs under $20 from your local auto club. That is all the paperwork standing between you and your Pennsylvania Alleghenies adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Brownstown?
Every RV rental in Brownstown booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are never on your own out on Route 219 or US-22. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you peace of mind without arranging separate coverage. During checkout you choose the protection tier that fits your comfort level (you pick this, not the host). It is not traditional auto insurance, but it functions as a financial safety net designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals. Pro tip: match your protection tier to your trip. Longer Pennsylvania Alleghenies road trips through the Laurel Highlands often justify the higher tier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Brownstown RV rental?
You can book your RV rental in Brownstown with confidence. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you are not locked in the moment you click confirm. After that window, refunds depend on how close you are to your trip start date and whether extenuating circumstances like severe weather apply. The full policy is shown on the RVezy website and during checkout. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits. Pro tip: booking a summer trip to Raystown Lake or Ohiopyle months ahead gives you flexibility to lock in dates early and adjust later if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Brownstown?
Yes, your dog is welcome on the trip! Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Brownstown are just a filter click away on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, and you'll see only listings from hosts who happily welcome four-legged guests (some may charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is shown upfront). Once you're on the road, Cambria County is genuinely dog-friendly. Duman Lake County Park allows leashed pets throughout the recreation area, and the Ghost Town Trail (a 46-mile rail-trail running right through Cambria and Indiana counties) is a favorite for long leash walks. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed. It almost always speeds up approval.
cambriacountypa.gov/duman-park/Can the RV be delivered to me in Brownstown?
Yes, RV delivery in Brownstown is widely available and it's hands-down the easiest way to start your trip, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many RVezy hosts in the Johnstown and Cambria County area will drive the rig directly to your driveway, a local campground like Bens Creek Campground, or a state park site, then handle the full setup including leveling, hookups, and a walkthrough of every system. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer it (fees usually range from $2 to $5 per mile depending on distance). Pro tip: delivery to your campsite means you can fly into Pittsburgh International or John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, skip the stress of driving a big rig, and start vacationing the moment you arrive.
visitjohnstownpa.com/stay/campgrounds-cabinsHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Brownstown?
You've got incredible range from Brownstown, and most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day with affordable overage rates if you go further (a handful even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage). Popular drives include Ohiopyle State Park and Fallingwater (about 50 miles, 1 hour south), Raystown Lake (about 60 miles, 1.5 hours east), Pittsburgh (75 miles, 1.5 hours west), Seven Springs Resort (40 miles, 1 hour south), and the Pennsylvania Wilds and Allegheny National Forest (about 130 miles, 2.5 hours north). You can even reach Niagara Falls in roughly 4 hours. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Pennsylvania Alleghenies loop, message hosts up front about a custom mileage package. It often costs less than paying per-mile overages.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/OhiopyleStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Brownstown, PA?
You're spoiled for choice with great RV camping in Brownstown and the surrounding Cambria County area. A few favorites: Bens Creek Campground in South Fork (about 15 minutes east) offers full hookups and a quiet wooded setting; Duman Lake County Park in Nicktown has affordable campsites right on a 19-acre stocked trout lake; Prince Gallitzin State Park at Glendale Lake offers 437 sites with electric hookups, a swimming beach, and 26 miles of trails; and Yellow Creek State Park near Indiana, PA (45 minutes west) is fantastic for fishing and paddling. Pro tip: Pennsylvania State Parks campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance through the official reservation system, and Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends book up fast (especially Prince Gallitzin).
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/PrinceGallitzinStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Brownstown?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Brownstown, and each window offers something different. Summer (June to August) brings warm days in the 75 to 85°F range, perfect for swimming at Glendale Lake or Yellow Creek. Early fall (mid-September through mid-October) is arguably the best time of all: crisp 55 to 70°F days, low humidity, and the Laurel Highlands' famous fall foliage peaking in the first two weeks of October. Spring (May) is quieter and greener, with everything blooming along the Ghost Town Trail. Winter trips are possible with the right four-season RV, but expect snow and temperatures often below freezing. Pro tip: book your Brownstown RV trip for the first weekend of October. The foliage on US-219 alone is worth the drive.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
Absolutely, and you're in great company: most RVezy guests in Brownstown are first-time RV renters. Every booking starts with a host-led walkthrough where they show you exactly how to operate the slide-outs, water systems, generator, awning, and dump valves, and answer every question (no rushed handoffs). For first time renting an RV, pick a travel trailer under 25 feet or a Class C motorhome, both drive much like a large truck or van. Stick to highways like US-219 and I-99 for your first day rather than tackling narrow mountain roads right away. Pro tip: if any nerves remain, ask your host for delivery and setup so your first time behind the wheel is on the way home, not toward your campsite.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Brownstown booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at Prince Gallitzin or climbing through Laurel Ridge on US-30. Roadside assistance handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host also knows their RV inside and out and is usually reachable directly for quick troubleshooting (sometimes it is as simple as flipping a breaker). RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's roadside assistance card and your host's contact info before you pull away on day one.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Brownstown RV rental to Canada or other states?
Cross-state travel is generally welcome on most RVezy rentals, and Brownstown's location makes multi-state RV road trips easy. You are under 2 hours from West Virginia, Maryland, and Ohio, and roughly 4 to 5 hours from New York, Niagara Falls, and Washington D.C. Canada trips may be allowed depending on the host and your protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm and notify RVezy during checkout. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a classic loop from Brownstown is Ohiopyle to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. All doable in a long weekend in one RV.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting for fuel is easier than most people think. Class C motorhomes in this area typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but figure 10 to 14 MPG combined. Pennsylvania gas prices generally run around $3.30 to $3.80 per gallon, and diesel is similar. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Brownstown to Ohiopyle and back, plan roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Stations along US-219 and the PA Turnpike (I-76) are RV-friendly with high clearance and easy pull-throughs. Pro tip: GetUpside and GasBuddy both work well in Cambria County, and the Sheetz on Scalp Avenue in Johnstown is a reliable, big-rig-accessible fuel stop.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Brownstown?
For peace of mind, book Pennsylvania State Park campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, and as soon as the 11-month booking window opens for holidays like Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Reservations for Prince Gallitzin, Yellow Creek, and Laurel Hill state parks go through the official Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system. Private campgrounds like Bens Creek often have more last-minute availability and make great backups. Midweek stays (Sunday to Thursday) are easy to grab even 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: if you strike out on a popular weekend, search for hosts on RVezy who offer delivery to dispersed sites on Pennsylvania State Forest land near Gallitzin State Forest. It is a legal, scenic, and surprisingly underused option.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/state-parks/reservations.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Brownstown?
Driving around Brownstown is very manageable for an RV, even a larger one. You're sitting at about 1,800 feet elevation on the western edge of the Allegheny Front, with main routes like US-219, US-22, and Route 56 offering wide lanes and reasonable grades. The biggest things to watch are the steep descents into the Conemaugh River valley around Johnstown (use a lower gear), occasional sharp curves on Route 271, and winter conditions from December through March, when lake-effect snow and freezing rain are common. Avoid taking taller rigs on narrow side roads in older boroughs like Westmont. Pro tip: PennDOT's 511PA app gives you real-time traffic, weather, and construction alerts statewide. Check it before tackling the climb up to the Allegheny tunnels on the PA Turnpike.
511pa.com/What hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Brownstown offer?
You'll find a healthy mix of full-service and rustic options. Most private campgrounds near Brownstown (Bens Creek, Friendship Village, Wright's Orchard Station) offer full hookups with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site, plus Wi-Fi, laundry, and showers. Pennsylvania State Parks like Prince Gallitzin and Yellow Creek typically offer electric-only sites (no sewer at the pad), but every park has a free dump station and potable water fill on the way in or out. Cell signal is solid on Verizon and AT&T throughout Cambria County. Pro tip: if you booked an electric-only site, fill your fresh tank at the park entrance, use water sparingly during your stay, and hit the dump station on your way out. Easy and free.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Brownstown?
Today's RV rentals in Brownstown are seriously comfortable. Expect real beds (queen or king in most Class C and travel trailer rentals, plus convertible dinettes and bunks), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave, gas stove, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both A/C and propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger (the legal limit while driving). Most listings include a TV, and many offer onboard generators, solar setups, outdoor speakers, and even mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. Sleeps counts range from 2 in a campervan rental in Brownstown to 8 or 10 in a larger bunkhouse trailer. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and check the photos carefully. RVezy listings show the exact bed layout so you can match the rig to your group size.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts in Brownstown offer?
Hosts in Brownstown make customizing your trip easy. Popular add-ons include full kitchen kits (pots, pans, dishes) for $25 to $75, bedding and linen packages for $15 to $40 per person, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable generators, bike racks, and even kayaks or paddleboards on lake-bound rentals. Pickup is typically at the host's location near Johnstown, but many offer delivery to campgrounds across Cambria, Somerset, and Indiana counties (great for an effortless start to your motorhome rental in Brownstown). Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per day with overages around $0.35 to $0.50 per additional mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery + setup + a stocked kitchen kit and you'll arrive to an RV that's level, plugged in, cooled down, and ready to live in. That's pure vacation mode.
visitpa.com/regions/allegheniesHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Brownstown is handled fully through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a check to a host. When you book, your card is charged for the rental total plus taxes and any add-ons you selected. A refundable security deposit is placed as a separate hold on your card before your trip and released after your safe return, assuming no damage outside the protection plan's coverage. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels you received it with, and dump the tanks if your host requests it (or pay the small dump fee instead). Pro tip: keep receipts for fuel and dump station stops as easy proof everything was handled.
