Campgrounds near Clearfield, Pennsylvania
Clearfield sits in west-central Pennsylvania along the West Branch Susquehanna River, off Interstate 80. The area is part of the Pennsylvania Wilds region and serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading into the Moshannon State Forest, Parker Dam State Park, and the elk range farther north. Most nearby campgrounds are a short drive from I-80, which keeps arrival and resupply straightforward.
Options in the immediate area range from a state park campground to family-run private parks. Simon B Elliott State Park sits just north of Exit 111 on Interstate 80 and offers a rustic, wooded setting, while Woodland Campground, Lauder Family Campground, Elk Crossing 555 Campground, and Riverview Campsites round out the private choices near town.
RV renters should expect a mix of full-hookup private sites and more rustic state park loops. Cell coverage is spotty once travel moves off the interstate corridor, so downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is worthwhile.
Things to do around Clearfield
The surrounding forests are the main draw. Simon B Elliott State Park sits inside the 318-acre park within Moshannon State Forest, offering walking paths and access to the wider forest road network. Parker Dam State Park, a short drive away, adds a swimming lake, boat rentals, and family-friendly loops, and the Quehanna Trail system runs through the region for longer backpacking trips.
Fishing is available in the area, with native and stocked trout in the small mountain streams around Elliott and Parker Dam. The West Branch Susquehanna River near town supports paddling and bank fishing.
In winter, the Moshannon State Forest opens up for snow travel. Snowmobilers use Simon B Elliott State Park as a staging point for the surrounding trail network, and the park stays open year round from sunrise to sunset.

The camping season around Clearfield is shaped by cold, snowy winters and short, warm summers. State park tent and RV loops operate seasonally: the 25-site camping area at Simon B Elliott offers modern restrooms without showers and a sanitary dump station, and the campground is open from early May through October. Private parks near town generally follow a similar spring-to-fall window, with a few offering shoulder-season stays.
Summer is peak season. Weekends around Independence Day, fishing openers, and fall foliage in early-to-mid October book out well ahead of arrival, particularly at state park loops and cabins. Weekdays are noticeably quieter.
Winter shifts the area toward hunting and snow sports rather than RV camping. Six rustic CCC-era cabins at Simon B Elliott are available for rent year round, each with access to a private modern restroom that includes a sink, flush toilet, and shower. RV renters who visit in winter should confirm which loops are plowed and whether water service has been shut off.
How to book
State park sites in the Clearfield area are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, operated by ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least three days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, and popular weekends fill quickly, so early planning helps. Bookings can also be made by phone at 888-PA-PARKS.
Private campgrounds such as Woodland Campground, Lauder Family Campground, Elk Crossing 555 Campground, and Riverview Campsites take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Ask about pull-through length, hookup type, and low-clearance approaches when booking a larger rental RV.
A few practical rules apply at state park sites. The maximum stay is 14 days during the summer season, and campers must vacate the park for 48 hours between stays.
What to expect on arrival
Expect a wooded, rustic feel at the state park loops and a more developed layout at the private parks. At Simon B Elliott, the campground provides modern flush toilet restrooms but no showers, along with a sanitary dump station for RV users, and pets are permitted on all sites. Sites here are best suited to smaller and mid-size rentals, and the loop is rustic non-electric.
Firewood rules are strict across Pennsylvania parks. To help protect the forest from invasive insects such as the emerald ash borer, do not transport firewood over long distances and use local firewood instead. All firewood must be burned prior to departure.
Bears are present in the region, so store food and trash in the RV or in provided containers. Nights are cool even in summer at this elevation, so pack layers.

How much does an RV rental in Clearfield typically cost?
An RV rental in Clearfield is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Pennsylvania Wilds. Travel trailers usually run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs land around $250 to $400. To find a cheap RV rental in Clearfield, book midweek, target shoulder season in May or late September, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Many listings also include camp chairs, linens, and kitchen kits at no extra cost. Prices tend to spike around the Clearfield County Fair in early August, so book early if your trip overlaps that week.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clearfield%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Clearfield, PA?
A regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clearfield, no commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement required in Pennsylvania, even for big Class A motorhomes. You'll just need to be 25 or older and complete RVezy's quick ID confirmation through the platform before pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club, usually under $25. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is. Once verified, you're cleared to roll out toward Parker Dam State Park or I-80 the same day.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs protection or roadside assistance included with my Clearfield RV rental?
Yes. Every RV rental in Clearfield booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick what fits your comfort and budget. If you get a flat on Route 879 along the West Branch Susquehanna or need a jump at Curwensville Lake, one phone call gets help dispatched. It is peace of mind built into every booking so you can focus on bugling elk and starry Pennsylvania Wilds nights.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change, can I cancel my Clearfield RV booking?
Yes, and booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund shortly after booking. Beyond that, refund amounts depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will issue a refund or travel credit. Booking your motorhome rental in Clearfield well ahead actually gives you the most flexibility, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip to help sort things out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Clearfield?
Yes, dogs are very welcome here. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Clearfield options, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings ready for your four-legged copilot. Once you're on the road, Clearfield is genuinely dog country: Parker Dam State Park, S.B. Elliott State Park, and Curwensville Lake Recreation Area all allow leashed pets on trails and in most campsites. The Susquehanna River Walk in downtown Clearfield is also a great leg-stretcher. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees (usually $25 to $75 per trip) and ask about any breed or size preferences so check-in is seamless.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/Pages/Pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Clearfield?
Yes, RV delivery in Clearfield is one of the smartest moves for first-timers. Many hosts will drive the RV to your campground, set it up, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system, so you never have to back a trailer or touch a sewer hose. Popular delivery destinations include Parker Dam State Park, Curwensville Lake, S.B. Elliott State Park, and private campgrounds near I-80. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip. Filter for Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campsite number for a stress-free start to your Clearfield RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clearfield%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does mileage work and how far can I realistically travel from Clearfield?
Clearfield's location right on Interstate 80 makes it a great launch pad. Hosts set their own mileage allowances, typically 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.45 each, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer journeys. From Clearfield, you can reach Cook Forest State Park in about 75 minutes, the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette in roughly 90 minutes, Cherry Springs State Park (a Dark Sky stargazing favorite) in about 2 hours, Pittsburgh in 2.5 hours, and Niagara Falls in roughly 4 hours. If you are planning a big loop, message hosts upfront about a mileage bundle, many will discount it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002007053-Renting-an-RVWhere are the best campgrounds to stay near Clearfield?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Clearfield include Parker Dam State Park (full-service sites, swimming beach, and the CCC museum, about 20 minutes north), S.B. Elliott State Park (rustic and quiet, great for stargazing), Curwensville Lake Recreation Area (waterfront sites with boating and fishing, 15 minutes south), and Clear Creek State Park along the Clarion River (about an hour northwest). For RV camping in Clearfield, book Pennsylvania state parks through the DCNR reservation system up to 11 months ahead, as summer weekends fill fast.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for a Clearfield RV trip?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for an RV rental in Clearfield, PA. May through June brings mountain laurel blooms (Pennsylvania's state flower) and mild 60-75°F days, July and August deliver warm 80°F afternoons perfect for Curwensville Lake, and late September into mid-October is the showstopper, fiery foliage plus elk rutting season at Benezette. Most state park campgrounds operate roughly April through mid-December. Winters are genuinely cold (lows in the teens, regular snow), so most rentals pause December through March. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for peak elk bugling plus early color, it's the local insider's favorite week of the year.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Clearfield?
You've got this, and Clearfield is actually a great place for a first time renting an RV. Roads here are wide, traffic is light outside of I-80, and your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, the generator, and dumping tanks. If you'd rather skip towing entirely, book a Class C motorhome or campervan, or choose delivery so the RV is already set up when you arrive. Stick to flatter routes like Route 322 or I-80 for your first day, and save the winding backroads to Benezette for once you're comfortable. Hosts and RVezy support are a text away the entire trip.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Clearfield booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Quehanna Highway, the battery dies at S.B. Elliott State Park, or you need a tow off I-80, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also your first line of support and knows the rig inside out, and most will answer texts within minutes. Mechanical issues with the RV itself are the host's responsibility, not yours. Save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before leaving, and snap a quick photo of the VIN at pickup for faster service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV across state lines or into Canada from Clearfield?
Yes, interstate travel is built into the Clearfield experience. Sitting right on I-80, you can easily plan an RV road trip from Clearfield to New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, or Virginia, all within a day's drive. Popular routes include heading west to Pittsburgh and Ohio's Lake Erie shore, or east to the Poconos and New York's Finger Lakes. Travel into Canada (think Niagara Falls or Toronto) depends on the host's approval and insurance coverage, so message them first to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Clearfield RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's predictable. Expect roughly 8-10 mpg for a Class A, 10-14 mpg for a Class C, 12-18 mpg for a campervan, and your tow vehicle's mpg minus 30-40% for a travel trailer. Pennsylvania gas typically runs slightly above the national average, and you'll find reliable fuel stops at the Clearfield I-80 Exit 120 cluster (Sheetz, Pilot, TA Travel Center) and DuBois Exit 101. For a 4-night, 300-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: Sheetz tends to have the friendliest big-rig access in central PA.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clearfield?
Book early and you'll get the best sites. Pennsylvania state parks like Parker Dam, S.B. Elliott, and Clear Creek open reservations 11 months in advance through the DCNR online reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) can sell out within hours of opening. For private parks like Woodland Campground or Curwensville Lake Recreation Area, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually plenty. Fall foliage weekends in late September and early October are nearly as competitive as summer thanks to elk season. If a state park is full, check for a midweek opening, Sunday through Wednesday stays are often wide open even at the most popular parks.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Clearfield?
Clearfield is genuinely RV-friendly to drive. Interstate 80 runs right through (Exit 120), giving you flat, wide, well-maintained lanes east and west. Route 322 and Route 219 are also smooth sailing. The catch: many scenic backroads heading toward Benezette, the Quehanna Wild Area, and the elk-viewing areas are narrow, winding, and sometimes gravel, so save those for after you're comfortable with the rig. Watch for deer and elk crossings, especially at dawn and dusk, and slow down in fog along the West Branch Susquehanna River valley. Winter brings snow and ice from November through March. Pro tip: PennDOT's 511PA app gives real-time road, weather, and construction updates statewide.
511pa.com/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Clearfield?
Most campgrounds near Clearfield are well-equipped for RVs. Pennsylvania state parks like Parker Dam and Clear Creek offer electric hookups (20/30/50 amp at many sites), modern flush restrooms, hot showers, dump stations, and potable water fill stations, though full sewer hookups at the site are less common at state parks. Private parks in the area provide full hookups including sewer. If you need to dump tanks or fill fresh water, Parker Dam, S.B. Elliott, and the Clearfield I-80 travel centers all have dump stations. State park sites within your reserved loop can vary, so arrive earlier in the day to settle in and pick a level spot.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/ParkerDamStatePark/Pages/Camping.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Clearfield?
More comfort than you'd expect. A typical campervan rental Clearfield travelers book includes a queen bed, small kitchen with fridge/stove/sink, and basic seating. Class C motorhomes usually sleep 4-6 with a full kitchen, bathroom with shower, dinette, AC, furnace, and seatbelted travel seats. Class A and larger fifth wheels often add slide-outs, washer/dryer, multiple TVs, and generators. Wifi isn't standard, most folks use a phone hotspot (Verizon has the best coverage in the Pennsylvania Wilds; AT&T is spottier near Benezette). Every listing shows photos and a full amenity list, and you can filter by sleeps count, RV type, and features like generator or solar before you book.
fcc.gov/BroadbandDataWhat add-ons and pickup options do Clearfield hosts offer?
Clearfield hosts go the extra mile. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $50), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor mats, generators, propane fills, bike racks, and even kayaks (handy for the West Branch Susquehanna). Pickup is typically at the host's location near Clearfield, DuBois, or Curwensville, with most pickups between 1 and 4 pm and drop-offs by 11 am, though exact times vary by host. Many hosts also offer delivery to nearby state parks for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies are listed clearly on every listing, often 100 to 150 free miles per night with paid overage. Ask the host about bundling add-ons, many will offer a small discount when you book multiple together.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clearfield%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure, everything goes through RVezy, never directly to the host. You pay for the rental, protection plan, and any add-ons at booking with a credit card. A refundable security deposit (commonly $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV and the protection level you choose) is pre-authorized on your card shortly before your trip, not charged unless there is an issue. After return, assuming no damage or excess mileage, the hold is released, usually within a few business days. Take time-stamped photos and a short walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off in Clearfield, it is the best way to ensure your deposit comes back fast and in full.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Clearfield during winter for snow trips?
Yes, winter rentals are available and the Pennsylvania Wilds in snow can be beautiful. A handful of Clearfield hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces built for temperatures that regularly dip into the teens from December through February. You will want shore power at your site, as most state park campgrounds close for the winter, though some private RV parks stay open year-round. Filter for winterized or four-season RVs and message the host to confirm. Pair a winter rental with snowmobiling on the Bloody Skillet Trail system or ice fishing on Curwensville Lake for a true Pennsylvania winter adventure.
