Campgrounds and RV parks near Elim, PA

Water activities anchor most trips. The 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir supports boating, kayak fishing, and a swim beach, and Quemahoning Family Recreational Area serves as the reservoir's public access point with a boat launch, fishing pier, and nature trails. Smaller stocked lakes and ponds at the surrounding private campgrounds add family-friendly shoreline fishing. History-focused trips can build around the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, the Johnstown Inclined Plane, and the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, all within a short drive. For hiking and cycling, the Laurel Highlands ridge trails, Path of the Flood Trail, and the Great Allegheny Passage are all reachable as day trips. Downtown Johnstown offers restaurants, minor-league baseball, and grocery restocks between outings.

The camping season in this part of Pennsylvania is defined by elevation and lake schedules. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area operates a standard warm-weather season, opening in May and closing at the end of October, and most private campgrounds in Somerset and Cambria counties follow a similar April-to-October window. Winter RV camping options are very limited. Late spring brings cool nights, high water, and quiet campgrounds, which suits anglers and hikers who want space. Summer is peak season: lake beaches open, family sites fill on weekends, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out well in advance. Early fall is often the best window for RV travelers. Daytime temperatures stay comfortable, biting insects fade, and the Laurel Highlands hardwoods turn through late September and October. Overnight lows drop quickly by mid-October, so cold-weather bedding and freshwater tank management become important toward the end of the season.

RV sites at Quemahoning Family Recreational Area include a firm packed pad, fire ring, picnic table, and 110V 30-amp electric service, with a central dump station and a water fill point rather than individual water hookups at the sites. Bath and shower facilities are a short walk from the sites. Expect similar setups at the smaller private parks in the area: electric and dump service, wooded sites, and simple amenities rather than resort features. Cell coverage is uneven once off the main highways, and terrain can be steep on the approach roads, so plan fuel and grocery stops in Johnstown or Somerset. Black bears are present in the Laurel Highlands, so store food and trash inside the RV or in hard containers overnight.
