Campgrounds near Ferndale, Pennsylvania
Ferndale is a small borough on the southern edge of Johnstown in Cambria County, set in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania. The area sits in the Conemaugh River valley, and campgrounds nearby range from lake-focused public sites to private RV parks with hookups, cabins, and pools.
Within roughly an hour's drive, RV travelers can reach Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, which serves as the only public access to the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir and operates as a full-service campground and boat launch, and Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, a private park with a stocked lake holding trout, catfish, bass, crappie, and bluegill. Boyers Pond Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Woodland Campsites Inc round out the closest options for families traveling by RV.
Sites in this region range from lakeside parks to forested retreats in the Laurel Highlands, sitting at elevations that create microclimates often several degrees cooler than nearby cities. That elevation matters when planning shoulder-season trips, since nights can be sharply colder than the Johnstown forecast suggests.
Things to do near Ferndale
Water recreation drives most trips. Quemahoning Reservoir covers roughly 900 acres in southwestern Pennsylvania and offers boating, fishing, and a public boat launch through Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, along with a swim beach, nature trails, fishing pier, playground, and sports fields. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing has a five-acre stocked fishing lake and a swimming pool with a splash pad on-site.
Off the water, families use Ferndale as a base for the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, the Johnstown Inclined Plane, and Idlewild Park and Soak Zone, which Mirror Lake sits closest to among area campgrounds. The Path of the Flood Trail and the Ghost Town Trail add rail-trail biking within short driving distance.
Ski resorts at Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain draw winter visitors, though most private campgrounds in the area close before ski season begins.

Most campgrounds around Ferndale run a mid-April through mid-October season. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing is open mid April to mid October, and Quemahoning Family Recreational Area operates from May 1 to October 31. Plan accordingly if traveling in late fall or winter, since many private parks winterize water lines and close bathhouses.
Summer is the peak booking window. School-vacation weekends and holidays fill first, particularly at lakeside sites and at parks close to Idlewild. Shoulder months bring cooler nights and lighter traffic, with fall color typically peaking in mid to late October across the Laurel Highlands.
Winter is cold and snowy. Johnstown averages about four inches of snow in each of January and February, and back roads to rural campgrounds can be icy. RV travelers passing through in the off-season should confirm whether any dump stations, potable water, or electric pedestals remain active before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Ferndale
Booking channels vary by campground. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area takes reservations through an online portal with site-specific booking for back-in and pull-through sites, with filters for amenities such as 30-amp and 50-amp electric, fire pits, and grills. Mirror Lake requires a one-night deposit within five days of making a reservation, and checks are accepted only if paid at least 30 days prior to arrival, with the balance due by cash or credit card.
For holiday weekends and peak summer Saturdays, book several weeks out. Mirror Lake cancellations made less than 14 days prior to arrival forfeit all money, with no refunds for inclement weather, illness, work schedules, or early departure, so confirm cancellation policies before paying.
Smaller family-run parks in the area often take reservations by phone. Have RV length, slide count, and hookup needs ready when calling.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of RV sites with hookups, water-and-electric sites, and rustic tent areas. Mirror Lake has 40 RV sites that accommodate rigs up to 40 feet, with water and 30-amp electric, back-ins, WiFi, a camp store, dump station, fire rings, and a swimming pool. Quemahoning offers 28 RV sites suited to pop-ups, fifth-wheels, travel trailers, and motorhomes, each with a firm packed pad, fire ring, picnic table, and 110V / 30-amp electric service.
Cell coverage is generally usable in valley locations but can drop in the ridges. Bring layers even in summer, since valley fog and cool nights are common. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has issued a firewood quarantine, so no firewood may be brought into Pennsylvania from other states; buy local wood at the campground instead.
Black bears live in the surrounding forests, so store food and coolers inside the RV overnight.
