Campgrounds near Friedens, Pennsylvania
Friedens sits in Somerset County in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, on the Allegheny Plateau just off US Route 219. The elevation, around 2,000 feet, keeps summers cooler than lower-lying parts of the state and produces real winters with regular snow. RV travelers use the area as a base for the Quemahoning Reservoir, Laurel Hill and Kooser state parks, the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail, and Flight 93 National Memorial, which sits about eight miles from town.
Private campgrounds close to Friedens include Rainbow Woods Campground, Woodland Campsites Inc, Boyers Pond Campground, and Hickory Hollow Campground, most offering a mix of full and partial hookup sites suited to travel trailers and Class C motorhomes. The Quemahoning Family Recreational Area adds waterfront sites on the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir.
Most nearby roads are RV-friendly, though several campground access lanes are narrow rural routes with tight turns, so larger rigs should confirm site length before booking.
Things to do near Friedens
The Quemahoning Reservoir is the main local draw, with boating, kayaking, and fishing for bass, walleye, and panfish. Guests at Quemahoning Family Recreational Area can launch directly from the campground and use the swim beach and fishing pier. Boyers Pond Campground centers on its own pond for low-key shoreline fishing, which works well for families with young children.
Within a short drive, Laurel Hill and Kooser state parks add swimming beaches, hiking loops, and shaded picnic areas. The Great Allegheny Passage, accessible at Rockwood and Meyersdale, offers flat, gravel cycling on a former rail bed.
History stops include Flight 93 National Memorial, roughly eight miles from Friedens, and the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, both suited to a half-day visit.

The RV season in this part of the Laurel Highlands generally runs from mid-April through late October. Most private campgrounds near Friedens open in mid to late April, once overnight freezes ease, and close by the end of October when water systems are winterized. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area operates on a shorter May through October calendar, so confirm opening dates directly with each park.
Summer is the peak window. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day book out first, often several weeks in advance at lakeside campgrounds like Quemahoning Family Recreational Area. Weekday arrivals in June and early September see far more availability.
Fall brings reliable color through the first three weeks of October across the plateau, with cooler nights that call for propane heat in the RV. Winter camping options are limited: heavy snow and freezing temperatures close most private parks, and state park campgrounds in the area typically shut down for the cold season.
How to book a campsite near Friedens
Private campgrounds around Friedens, including Rainbow Woods Campground, Woodland Campsites Inc, Hickory Hollow Campground, and Boyers Pond Campground, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Deposits are typical, and holiday weekends often require a two or three-night minimum stay.
The Quemahoning Family Recreational Area takes online reservations through its own website, which opens bookings for the season on March 1. Nearby Pennsylvania state parks, including Laurel Hill and Kooser, use the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, which opens bookings up to eleven months ahead at noon Eastern time.
For peak summer weekends, book lakeside and hookup sites eight to twelve weeks out. Shoulder-season midweek stays can usually be secured a week in advance.
What to expect at campgrounds near Friedens
Sites in this area are mostly wooded and level, cut into hardwood forest on the Allegheny Plateau. Full hookups are common at the larger private parks, while Quemahoning Family Recreational Area offers 30 and 50 amp electric with dump station and water nearby rather than at each site, so plan tank capacity accordingly. Cell service is reliable along US 219 and near Somerset but drops off on backroads and inside dense tree cover.
Black bears are present throughout Somerset County; store food and trash in the RV overnight rather than at the picnic table. Mosquitoes and gnats are active near water in June and July.
Expect cool evenings even in midsummer given the elevation, and pack layers. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Pennsylvania rules on transporting untreated wood.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Friedens%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Friedens, PA?
A standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Friedens, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License for personal-use recreational vehicles, and virtually every motorhome and travel trailer listed on RVezy falls within standard non-commercial license limits. To be an approved driver on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older with a valid license, which is verified during booking. International guests can drive with their home-country license, ideally accompanied by an International Driving Permit. Your host will walk you through every system at pickup, so first-time renters feel confident before turning the key.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Friedens?
Every RV rental in Friedens, PA booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward the Pennsylvania Turnpike or Laurel Hill State Park with confidence. You choose your preferred protection level (Standard, Special, or Supreme) during checkout, and each plan covers physical damage to the RV up to defined limits, with different deductibles and inclusions. Roadside assistance is bundled in, so if something happens on Route 219 or in the Allegheny Mountains, one call gets help dispatched. That built-in safety net is a major reason first-time renters feel comfortable booking a motorhome rental in Friedens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Friedens RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide, not individual hosts. Every reservation includes a grace period shortly after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund of the rental amount. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you are from the trip start date, with more flexibility the earlier you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps rebook or issues a refund or travel credit. Because the policy applies to every listing, you don't have to compare fine print across hosts. For winter trips to Seven Springs, locking in dates early gives you the most flexibility built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Friedens?
Yes, and the Laurel Highlands is a great region for traveling with dogs. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see pet-friendly RV rental Friedens options, then message the host about any specifics like size, breed, or extra cleaning fees. Once you're on the road, your dog will love Laurel Hill State Park's pet-designated campsites near the 63-acre lake, leashed-dog trails at Kooser State Park, and the open spaces around Quemahoning Reservoir. Many private campgrounds in the Somerset and Friedens area also welcome leashed pets at RV sites; confirm pet policies directly with the campground when you book. Pack a tie-out stake and a collapsible water bowl, as mountain afternoons can warm up quickly even in spring.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Friedens%2C%20Pennsylvania&Features=PetFriendlyCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Friedens?
Yes, RV delivery in Friedens is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts in the Somerset and Friedens area will deliver the RV directly to campgrounds like Laurel Hill State Park or Kooser State Park, or even your private property, then level it, hook it up to water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the awning by yourself. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, then message them with your campsite number. Delivery is especially worth it for Seven Springs ski weekends when mountain roads can get icy.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Friedens%2C%20Pennsylvania&Delivery=trueHow far can I travel on a Friedens RV trip?
Friedens is a great launchpad for a road trip. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly around 100 to 150 free miles per day) with additional miles available for a small per-mile fee, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer Friedens RV trip. From Friedens you're roughly 30 minutes to Ohiopyle State Park and the Youghiogheny River, 20 minutes to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stoystown, about 75 minutes to Pittsburgh, 45 minutes to Fallingwater, and roughly 2.5 hours to Cleveland, OH or 3 hours to Washington, D.C. Ask your host about their mileage policy in your first message so you can plan an itinerary that fits your budget.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037945634-Understanding-the-mileage-policyWhere are the best campgrounds near Friedens, PA?
Friedens has excellent campground options nearby. Top picks include Laurel Hill State Park (about 15 minutes west, with around 264 sites including electric and a limited number of full-hookup sites near a 63-acre lake), Kooser State Park (a smaller, shaded campground at higher elevation in the Laurel Highlands), Hickory Hollow Campground near Rockwood (rolling countryside with pull-throughs suitable for larger rigs), and Pioneer Park Campground for family-friendly amenities. Pennsylvania state parks open online reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Weekends from June through August book out fast, so reserve as soon as your dates are firm.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Friedens?
Friedens sits in the Laurel Highlands at roughly 2,000 feet elevation, which keeps it noticeably cooler than lower parts of Pennsylvania, a real bonus in summer. The sweet spot for RV camping in Friedens is late May through mid-October, with typical summer highs in the upper 70s to low 80s°F and cool nights often in the 50s. Fall foliage usually peaks in early to mid-October and is spectacular along Route 31 and the Laurel Ridge. Winter (December through March) brings real snow, with Seven Springs and Hidden Valley resorts about 20 minutes away and a few private campgrounds open year-round for ski trips. For the best mix of warm days, cool nights, and early color, target the last weekend of September.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay in Friedens?
You'll do great. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in a rural area like Friedens where roads are wide and traffic is light. Your RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and dumping tanks, and they're a text or call away during your trip. If you're nervous about driving, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C, or book delivery so the RV is already set up when you arrive. Local roads like PA-31 and US-219 are scenic and forgiving. Practice a few right turns and a slow backup in an empty lot before heading to your campsite for extra confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106554-First-time-renter-tipsWhat happens if I break down on a Friedens RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, a dead battery at Laurel Hill State Park, or a tow need on US-219, one call gets help dispatched. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy messaging system for RV-specific questions, like restarting the generator or where the spare fuses live, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate before you leave the pickup, it speeds up any roadside call considerably.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Friedens?
An RV road trip from Friedens opens up some of the best driving in the eastern U.S. Top routes include the Laurel Highlands Loop (Friedens to Ohiopyle State Park to Fallingwater to Seven Springs, roughly 90 miles), the Flight 93 and Gettysburg Heritage Run (about 2.5 hours east via the PA Turnpike), a Pittsburgh and Three Rivers weekend (around 75 minutes northwest), the Deep Creek Lake getaway in Maryland (about 90 minutes south on US-219), and the Allegheny National Forest run (roughly 3.5 hours north). Cross-state travel within the U.S. is supported on RVezy rentals; trips into Mexico are not permitted. US-219 south through the Alleghenies is a scenic, lower-traffic alternative to I-68.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Friedens RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but easy to estimate. Class B campervans typically average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes around 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices tend to run slightly above the national average due to state fuel taxes, so plan around current pump prices in Somerset, the nearest fuel hub about 10 minutes from Friedens. For a 4-day, 300-mile Laurel Highlands loop in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $200 in fuel depending on prices. Diesel typically costs more per gallon but goes farther per tank. Fill up in Somerset before heading deep into the mountains, as gas stations get sparser on the smaller routes south of US-30.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=PAHow far in advance should I book a campground near Friedens?
For peak summer weekends and fall foliage, book your campsite as early as possible. Pennsylvania state parks like Laurel Hill, Kooser, and Ohiopyle open reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official PA State Parks reservation system or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), and the most popular waterfront sites at Laurel Hill Lake can disappear within minutes of release. Private campgrounds like Hickory Hollow typically allow 6 to 12 months out. Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and the first two weekends of October (peak leaf-peeping) are the hardest dates. Weekdays and shoulder season are much easier. If your dates are flexible, target a Sunday-to-Thursday stay for better availability and lower rates.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Friedens?
Driving around Friedens is mostly relaxed, scenic, and RV-friendly. PA-31, US-219, and I-76 (the Pennsylvania Turnpike) are well-maintained with manageable grades. The biggest local consideration is winter weather: snow squalls and freezing rain can hit between November and March, so check 511PA before driving and avoid back roads during active storms. In summer, occasional afternoon thunderstorms pop up over the ridges; pulling into a rest area for 20 to 30 minutes usually solves it. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially on rural stretches of PA-281. The climb from Somerset up toward Seven Springs has a few tight curves, so take it slow in a Class A or when towing a larger trailer.
511pa.com/What hookups and dump stations can I expect at Friedens campgrounds?
You'll find solid RV infrastructure across the Laurel Highlands. Laurel Hill State Park offers a large number of electric sites and a smaller selection of full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp electric, plus a public dump station and potable water fills near the campground. Hickory Hollow Campground offers full hookups with both back-in and pull-through sites. Kooser State Park is more rustic, with electric on some sites and central water sources. Always dump your tanks before leaving any of these campgrounds, as the next public dump station along US-219 can be a fair drive away, and you don't want to discover that with a full black tank.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What amenities come standard in a Friedens RV rental?
Most RVs on RVezy in the Friedens area come fully equipped: a sleeping area with real beds (queens are common in Class C and Class A), a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both AC and a propane furnace, seatbelted seating, and often a TV. Many also include a generator for off-grid power, an awning, and basic kitchenware. Campervan rental Friedens options are more compact but still cozy for two travelers. Wi-Fi availability varies, so ask the host directly. Confirm bedding and towels in your first message: some hosts include linens, while others offer them as a small add-on.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Friedens%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and pickup options do Friedens hosts offer?
Hosts in Friedens make trip-planning easy with a range of optional add-ons. Common extras include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, generator usage, bike racks, camp chairs, outdoor rugs, propane refills, and pet-cleaning fees. Many hosts offer delivery and setup to local campgrounds such as Laurel Hill State Park for a flat fee plus mileage, which is ideal for a family RV trip in Friedens. Pickup is usually self-serve at the host's address in Friedens or nearby Somerset with a 60 to 90-minute walkthrough. For a first trip, bundling delivery, setup, and a linen package is the easiest path: you arrive, sleep, and start your vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Friedens%2C%20Pennsylvania&Delivery=trueHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book, RVezy charges the rental total (nightly rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons) through the platform, so no cash or off-platform payments are needed. A separate refundable security deposit is held before pickup to cover any incidentals like excess mileage, late return, or minor damage not covered by the protection plan. The deposit is released after the trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. Snap photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, return with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and keep all communication in the RVezy app. A quick 90-second walkthrough video on your phone protects both you and the host.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Friedens for winter ski trips to Seven Springs?
Yes, and it's one of the most underrated ways to do a Laurel Highlands ski weekend. Friedens is about 20 minutes from Seven Springs Mountain Resort and around 25 minutes from Hidden Valley, so a winter-ready RV parked at a year-round campground gets you close to the slopes for a fraction of typical lodge prices. Look for RVezy listings with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power hookups, and message the host to confirm the RV is truly four-season ready and the campground is open in winter. Booking a delivered, pre-set-up RV with shore power at the campground lets you skip cold-weather setup and walk into a warm rig after your first day on the mountain.
