Camping near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania
Gallitzin sits on the summit of the Allegheny Front in Cambria County, central Pennsylvania, roughly 12 miles west of Altoona. The borough is best known as the home of Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, a 1,249-acre park whose main unit contains the Summit Level Visitor Center, the historic Lemon House, Engine House #6 Exhibit Shelter, the Skew Arch Bridge, picnic area and hiking trails. The site itself does not offer camping, but a cluster of private campgrounds and state-managed public lands lies within a short drive, making the area a practical base for RV travelers exploring the region's rail history and mountain terrain.
Close-in options include Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade and Wrights Orchard Station Campground, both within easy reach of the borough. A short drive west toward Patton opens up Glendale Valley Campground and access to Rock Run Recreation Area, a 6,000-acre trail system in the Allegheny Mountains with 140 miles of routes for ATV, UTV, and dirt bike use.
For a state-park stay with full facilities, Blue Knob State Park sits on Pennsylvania's second-highest peak in nearby Bedford County and offers a tent and trailer loop plus cabins, bookable through the Pennsylvania state park reservation system.
Things to do around Gallitzin
The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is the anchor attraction, with the Summit Level Visitor Center, the historic Lemon House, the Engine House No. 6 Exhibit Shelter, the Skew Arch Bridge, a picnic area, and hiking trails. A separate Staple Bend Tunnel unit sits about 4 miles east of Johnstown for hikers and cyclists. Just east of Gallitzin, Horseshoe Curve outside Altoona remains an active mainline railroad viewing area with an exhibition hall.
Off-road riders base at Rock Run Recreation Area, which offers 140 miles of diverse trails across 6,000 acres for ATV, UTV, and dirt bike riders. Blue Knob State Park adds fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, and downhill skiing, while Prince Gallitzin State Park to the northwest centers on Glendale Lake for boating, fishing, and swimming.

Camping in the Gallitzin area is a seasonal affair. Most public campgrounds in this part of Pennsylvania follow the state park calendar, opening in mid-April and closing in mid to late October. Blue Knob State Park's 50 tent and trailer sites are open from the second Friday in April to mid-October, with sites in open fields and wooded areas and two walk-in only sites. The park's Twin Fawn House is available year round, and cabins rent by the week during the summer peak season.
Summer is peak season. Campsites fill quickly on weekends, especially around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, and reservations should be locked in well ahead. Elevation matters here: the elevation of the park can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than the surrounding cities like Altoona and Johnstown, which is welcome in July and August but can bring chilly nights in shoulder season.
Winter effectively closes the public campgrounds. Snowfall is heavy at higher elevations, with Blue Knob averaging about 12 feet of snow annually, and the area supports downhill skiing at Blue Knob All Seasons Resort.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

Booking a campsite near Gallitzin
Pennsylvania state park sites, including those at Blue Knob State Park, are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica-powered system. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, with any remaining nights filled first-come first-served at the park office. Cabins and the group facility require advance booking, and in the summer peak season the cabins and house only rent by the week.
Private campgrounds near Gallitzin, including Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade, Wrights Orchard Station Campground, and Glendale Valley Campground, are booked directly through each operator by phone or website. Rock Run Recreation Area handles camping on-site alongside its OHV registration; on-site camping is spread across six campgrounds with over 350 primitive and 16 electric campsites, including two primitive cabins.
What to expect on the ground
This is Allegheny Mountain country, so expect wooded, rolling terrain, cool evenings, and mixed cell coverage. Public campgrounds tend to be quiet and lightly developed. Blue Knob's loop is a small, wooded campground with most sites offering electric service, plus water, a sanitary dump station, modern restrooms, and playground equipment. Water is available at central spigots rather than individual sites, two of its sites are walk-in only, and campsites can be rocky and the terrain can make parking challenging in certain spots, so leveling blocks are useful.
Private parks in the area typically offer full or partial hookups, but amenities vary widely. Rock Run spreads camping across multiple loops with a mix of primitive and electric sites; confirm hookup type, rig-length limits, and dump-station access with the operator before arrival.
