Campgrounds near Geistown, Pennsylvania
Geistown sits just outside Johnstown in Cambria County, in the Laurel Highlands region of southwestern Pennsylvania. The surrounding area gives RV renters access to reservoir camping, state park sites on the flanks of Pennsylvania's second-highest peak, and privately run rustic campgrounds within easy driving distance of Flight 93 National Memorial and Indian Lake.
The closest full-service option is Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, managed by the Cambria Somerset Authority in a forested, lake-adjacent park outside Hollsopple, with sites that vary in amenity level and electric hookups available at some. Additional choices include Boyers Pond Campground, Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Blue Knob State Park, which offers year-round wilderness on 6,128 acres of woodland in the northwestern tip of Bedford County, west of I-99, with Altoona, Johnstown and Bedford within 25 miles.
Elevation plays a big role in trip planning here. The elevation of Blue Knob can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than the surrounding cities, which matters for what to pack and when to book.
Things to do near Geistown
Water recreation is a major draw. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area serves as the only public access to the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir and functions as a full-service campground alongside its boat launch, with boat rentals on-site, electric motors only on the water, and fishing and kayaking coming up consistently across reviews. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing focuses on pond fishing for families who want a quieter setting.
Blue Knob State Park is the hub for land-based activity. It is a popular destination for families to enjoy fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, and downhill skiing, with nearly 20 miles of hiking trails and access to the 26-mile Lost Turkey Trail. Boyers Pond Campground and Rainbow Woods Campground work as practical bases for combining Flight 93 National Memorial visits, Indian Lake outings, and pond fishing in one trip.

The camping season for state park sites is spring through fall. The 50 tent and trailer sites at Blue Knob State Park are open from the second Friday in April to mid-October, and the cabins and Twin Fawn House rent by the week during summer peak season with a two-day minimum in the non-peak season. Private campgrounds like Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, Boyers Pond Campground, Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, and Rainbow Woods Campground generally follow a similar warm-weather window, so confirming exact opening dates before booking is important.
Summer is peak. The Blue Knob campground fills quickly during peak season, requiring advance reservations, and holiday weekends across the region book earliest. Shoulder seasons in late spring and early fall offer cooler nights and easier availability.
Winter shifts the region toward skiing rather than camping. Blue Knob All Seasons Resort operates the ski area at the highest elevation in Pennsylvania, and annual snowfall at the park averages about 12 feet, so most tent and RV sites are closed.
How to book campgrounds near Geistown
Pennsylvania state park sites are booked through the state's reservation system, operated on ReserveAmerica. For Blue Knob, reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Popular summer weekends should be reserved as early as the window opens.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area handles its own bookings directly, with a processing fee charged for reservations and site types ranging from RV and tent sites to timber-frame rustic cabins. Boyers Pond Campground, Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, and Rainbow Woods Campground are all independently operated and typically book by phone or through their own websites and listings.
For holiday weekends and prime summer dates, book several weeks out. Midweek stays in shoulder season are easier to secure last-minute.
What to expect at campgrounds near Geistown
Expect a mix of amenity levels rather than a single standard. At Quemahoning, sites vary with electric hookups available at some and more primitive setups at others, boat rentals are available on-site with electric motors only permitted on the water, most sites have sightlines toward the lake, the on-site camp store stocks wood, ice, and fishing supplies, cell service is limited, and each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, with the campground being pet-friendly.
Blue Knob is quieter and more rugged. Most sites offer 30 or 50-amp electric service but no water or sewer hookups at the site, a dump station and water spigot are provided on the way out, sites are hilly with limited shade or privacy, and the mountain location makes it notably cooler than surrounding areas.
Come prepared for spotty cell coverage, cool mountain evenings, and firewood purchased locally rather than hauled in.
