Camping near Hooversville, PA
Hooversville is a small borough in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, sitting along the Stonycreek River in the Laurel Highlands region of the state's southwestern corner. The town lies on PA Route 403, about five miles north of U.S. Route 30 and roughly 30 minutes south of Johnstown, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers exploring Somerset and Cambria counties.
The surrounding area is defined by rolling ridges, working farmland, and a mix of public and private campgrounds. The 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir sits just west of town, and Laurel Hill State Park, along with thousands of acres of state forest land, is a short drive southwest. Trout streams, mountain-bike trails, and Pennsylvania Turnpike access at Somerset (Exit 110) all fall within a reasonable radius.
Campground options near Hooversville range from full-service public sites at Quemahoning Family Recreational Area to smaller family-run parks such as Rainbow Woods Campground, Boyers Pond Campground, Woodland Campsites Inc, and Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing. Most sit on lakes, ponds, or wooded acreage suited to RVs of moderate length.
Things to do around Hooversville
Water recreation anchors most trips. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area provides the only public access to the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir, with a swim beach, boat launch, playground, pavilions, and athletic fields on site. Bass, trout, and panfish draw anglers, and kayak fishing is popular on the reservoir's coves. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing focuses on stocked-pond angling for families with younger kids.
Off-water, Laurel Hill State Park offers miles of hiking, mountain-biking, and cross-country-ski trails, plus a sandy swim beach on Laurel Hill Lake open from late May to mid-September. Day trips from a Hooversville base can reach the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob in the western Laurel Highlands, and the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail for road-bike or e-bike riding.

Fall foliage in the Laurel Highlands typically peaks in mid-October and is a strong shoulder-season window for RV travel, with fewer bugs and open sites midweek. How to book campgrounds near Hooversville
Pennsylvania state parks, including nearby Laurel Hill State Park, are reserved through the state's official reservation system online or by calling 888-PA-PARKS. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance and must be reserved at least three days ahead of arrival. Popular loops and full-hookup sites fill quickly for summer weekends, so early booking is recommended.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area handles its own reservations directly through its website, powered by Firefly Reservations, with the season opening for booking on March 1 at 8:00 A.M. Online reservations must be made at least one day before arrival; same-day requests are handled by phone with the park office.
Private campgrounds such as Rainbow Woods Campground, Boyers Pond Campground, Woodland Campsites Inc, and Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing each set their own policies. Call ahead to confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and cancellation terms before locking in dates.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in this part of Somerset County is hilly, with campgrounds tucked into wooded ridges and along small lakes and ponds. Sites at Quemahoning Family Recreational Area include packed pads, fire rings, picnic tables, and electric hookups (30-amp with select 50-amp sites), plus a shared shower house, dump station, and water spigots. Expect a mix of shaded and open sites elsewhere in the area.
Cell coverage is uneven in the hollows, and grocery runs are easiest in Somerset, Johnstown, or Berlin. Black bears are present in the Laurel Highlands, so use bear-aware food storage. Fires are allowed only in provided rings, and burn bans can be imposed during dry stretches. Pets are welcome at most parks on leash, though beach and day-use areas are typically off-limits.
