Campgrounds near Johnstown
Johnstown sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, at the confluence of the Little Conemaugh and Stonycreek rivers. RV travelers use it as a base for reservoir camping, state park lakes, and Flight 93 National Memorial, with the Allegheny ridges providing shaded, wooded sites within a short drive of downtown.
The closest full-service option is Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, the only public access point to the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir in Somerset County. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing offers a small-lake setting oriented toward anglers, while Boyers Pond Campground sits on approximately 54 acres near Central City, about a mile from Mountain Ridge ATV Park and four miles from the Flight 93 Memorial.
Additional options south of the city include Rainbow Woods Campground near Friedens and Woodland Campsites Inc near Somerset. State-park camping at Laurel Hill State Park expands the region's inventory of electric and full-hookup sites, all within about a 40-minute drive of Johnstown.
Things to do near Johnstown
Water recreation anchors the area. The Quemahoning Reservoir supports fishing, boating, and swimming, and Quemahoning Family Recreational Area serves as the only public access point to the 900-acre reservoir, with a swim beach, nature trails, fishing pier, playground, and sports fields. Laurel Hill Lake adds bass and trout fishing, paddling, and a designated swimming beach.
Off the water, the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville lies roughly 20 miles south of Johnstown. Mountain Ridge ATV Park draws off-road riders, and the Great Allegheny Passage rail trail passes through the region for cyclists.
In the city itself, the Johnstown Flood National Memorial and the Johnstown Inclined Plane give families a half-day of historical touring between campground nights.

Most private and public campgrounds in the Johnstown area operate on a May-to-October season. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area is open from May 1 to October 31, with online reservations handled through Firefly Reservations. Reservations at Laurel Hill State Park, by contrast, can be made up to 11 months in advance, and the park stays open year round with cottages equipped for winter use.
Spring brings the region's wettest stretch, with May averaging around 135 mm (5.3 inches) of rainfall and lake and river levels running high. Summer is the peak booking window: warm days, active swim beaches, and full programming at state park campgrounds from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Fall delivers cooler nights, fewer bugs, and hardwood color across the Laurel ridges through mid-to-late October. Winter is cold and snowy, so most private campgrounds close and only a limited number of state park cottages and lodges remain available.
How to book campgrounds near Johnstown
For Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, reservations are handled online through Firefly Reservations. Same-day stays should be arranged by phone with the campground office.
State park sites at Laurel Hill are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, operated on ReserveAmerica. Reservations open 11 months in advance at 12:00 PM Noon Eastern Time, and must be made 3 days ahead of arrival. The toll-free line is 1-888-PA-PARKS.
Private campgrounds including Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Boyers Pond Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Woodland Campsites Inc take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. For summer weekends and any holiday, book eight or more weeks in advance.
What to expect on arrival
Terrain in the Laurel Highlands is mountainous, with narrow rural roads leading to most campgrounds. Drivers of longer RVs should plan the last few miles of approach in daylight and confirm turning access with each park.
Hookup levels vary. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area has 28 RV sites, each with a firm packed pad, fire ring, picnic table, and 110V / 30 amp electric service, with a dump station and central water on site. Laurel Hill State Park has electric on most sites and full hookups on a limited number. Smaller private grounds tend toward electric-only with a shared dump station.
Expect wooded, shaded sites, gravel pads, fire rings, and picnic tables as the baseline. Cell coverage is inconsistent in the ridges, black bears are active in the region, and standard food storage rules apply at all sites.

pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to rent an RV in Johnstown, PA?
June through early October is prime time, though each season has its charm. Summer (June to August) brings warm days with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s and long daylight hours perfect for swimming at Glendale Lake or hiking in the Allegheny Mountains. September and October are arguably the most beautiful, with crisp days in the 60s and brilliant fall foliage across the Laurel Highlands, plus thinner crowds at popular campgrounds. Winters are cold with regular snowfall, so most RV camping in Johnstown winds down by late October. Pro tip: book the last two weekends of September or first weekend of October for peak foliage. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Johnstown RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is common. From Johnstown, you are perfectly positioned for a multi-state RV road trip: West Virginia is about an hour south, Maryland is roughly 90 minutes southeast, Ohio is about 2 hours west, and New York is around 3 hours north. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host directly before booking to confirm and discuss your route. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Johnstown RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable parts of your trip budget. Class C motorhomes around Johnstown typically get 8 to 12 MPG, Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, and towing a travel trailer with your own truck usually returns 10 to 14 MPG. Pennsylvania has higher fuel taxes than many states, so prices around Johnstown can run a bit above the national average. Pro tip: fill up before you leave Cambria County, since gas in smaller mountain towns near Blue Knob can be pricier. The GasBuddy app is helpful for finding the cheapest stations along Route 219 and US Route 22.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Johnstown?
For popular weekends, sooner is better. Pennsylvania state parks like Prince Gallitzin, Yellow Creek, and Blue Knob accept reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania state park reservation system, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) sell out months ahead. Private campgrounds typically book 4 to 8 weeks out for summer weekends. Shoulder-season trips in May or late September are often bookable just a week or two ahead. Pro tip: if your dream weekend looks booked, check back after the cancellation window, since campers often release sites and you can snag a last-minute opening.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Johnstown for an RV?
Once you know what to expect, Allegheny driving is genuinely beautiful. Johnstown sits in a steep river valley at about 1,200 feet elevation, with winding mountain roads on every side, so plan to drive at a relaxed pace and use lower gears on grades like the Route 219 climbs around Blue Knob. Avoid narrow, steep streets in downtown Johnstown with larger rigs and stick to Route 56, Route 219, and US Route 22. Winter brings snow and ice from late November through March, so check conditions before you go. Pro tip: most RV rental Pennsylvania trips from Johnstown head west on US Route 30 or south on Route 219, both of which are wide, scenic, and RV-friendly.

You will find a great mix of full-service and rustic options. Many private RV parks near Johnstown offer full hookups with 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Pennsylvania state parks like Prince Gallitzin and Yellow Creek typically offer electric hookups and modern restrooms with showers, plus on-site dump stations and potable water fills, though full sewer at the site is less common. Pro tip: if your site does not have sewer, the on-site dump stations at state parks are convenient and free for registered campers. Always top off your fresh water tank before heading deeper into the Alleghenies.

Each listing on RVezy shows exactly what is included with photos and a full amenity list. Plenty, and they make life easier. Pickup and drop-off are typically at the host's location, often within a short drive of downtown Johnstown, and delivery to your campground is frequently available for an extra fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, so check the details before booking. Pro tip: bundling add-ons with one host usually beats shopping for camping gear separately.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Johnstown%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is straightforward and secure. When you book a campervan rental in Johnstown or any other RV on RVezy, payment is handled through the platform with a credit or debit card, so you never hand cash to a host. Most hosts require a refundable security deposit, which is held (not charged) before your trip and released after the RV is returned in the same condition. The exact amount is shown on the listing before you book. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with the same fuel and propane levels, and follow the host's cleaning instructions. Easy in, easy out, more time enjoying the Laurel Highlands.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there family-friendly RV trip ideas from Johnstown?
So many, and the area is built for it. A family RV trip in Johnstown is hard to beat: spend a few days at Prince Gallitzin State Park swimming and boating on Glendale Lake, then head about 50 miles south to Ohiopyle State Park for whitewater rafting and the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail. Idlewild and SoakZone amusement park near Ligonier is roughly a 45-minute drive and a kid favorite, and the Johnstown Flood National Memorial and Inclined Plane make for an unforgettable history day. Pro tip: many RVezy hosts in Johnstown offer family-friendly rigs that sleep 6 to 8, often with bunk beds. Filter by sleeps count to find the perfect fit.
