Camping near Ligonier, Pennsylvania
Ligonier sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, about an hour east of Pittsburgh and surrounded by state parks, state forest, and private RV parks. The area draws RV renters for its mix of lakefront campgrounds, mountain streams, and Revolutionary-era history at Fort Ligonier.
Most campgrounds cluster along the PA Route 30 and PA Route 31 corridors between Ligonier, Donegal, and Somerset. Kooser State Park sits at an altitude of 2,600 feet in the Laurel Highlands, roughly one hour from Pittsburgh or Johnstown. Keystone State Park lies northwest of town in Derry Township, Westmoreland County, while private options such as Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Donegal Campground, and Laurel Highlands Camplands LLC add full-hookup capacity for larger rigs.
RV renters generally choose the state parks for scenery and lower density, and the private parks for longer stays, big-rig access, and family amenities. Sites within a 30-minute drive of downtown Ligonier put visitors close to the town diamond, Idlewild and SoakZone, and trailheads on Laurel Ridge.
Things to do around Ligonier
Water recreation anchors many trips. The 78-acre Keystone Lake has warm and cold water fishing, plus a swimming beach and non-powered boating. At Kooser, a trout stream flows the full length of the park, and visitors enjoy fishing, hiking, picnicking, and cross-country skiing in winter.
Hiking options range from short lakeside loops to the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, which crosses the ridge west of town. Idlewild and SoakZone, a family theme park just outside Ligonier, is a common day-trip anchor for RV families, along with Fort Ligonier, the Compass Inn Museum, and the Ligonier Diamond shops and restaurants.
In winter, nearby Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, and Laurel Mountain resorts add downhill skiing, snowboarding, and tubing within about 30 minutes of most area campgrounds.

State-park camping in the Ligonier area follows a defined season. The Kooser State Park campground operates from mid-April through mid-December, while Keystone State Park is open to camping from the first Friday in April to the third Sunday in October. Private parks such as Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing and Donegal Campground typically run longer seasons, though hookups and amenities can be limited in shoulder months.
Summer weekends and holidays are the busiest. Fall brings peak foliage across the Laurel Ridge, usually in mid-October, and cooler nights that require furnace-capable rigs. Spring is wet and cool at elevation, with lingering frost into May at Kooser's 2,600-foot elevation.
One notable planning item: Keystone Lake at Keystone State Park is scheduled to be drawn down for dredging from after Labor Day through the following mid-October, which will affect swimming, boating, and lakeside views during that window. The swimming area will be closed for that season, though trails, campground, and cabins remain open.
How to book near Ligonier
Pennsylvania state parks use a single centralized system. Reservations can be made online or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Both Kooser State Park and Lakeside at Keystone State Park book through that system.
Most campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance, and popular summer weekends often fill soon after the window opens. Weekend and holiday sites at Keystone go fastest, so booking as early as possible is recommended.
Private campgrounds including Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Donegal Campground, and Laurel Highlands Camplands LLC take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer holiday weekends, book private parks several months out and confirm rig-length limits before arrival.
What to expect on-site
Hookup levels vary. Kooser has 28 sites with electric hookups and seven non-electric sites, with five of the electric sites offering full service including sewer, water, and electricity. At Keystone, each campground has some sites with an electric hook-up, a modern bathhouse, and a sanitary dump station. Private parks in the area generally offer more full-hookup and 50-amp pull-through sites suited to larger motorhomes.
Pet rules differ by loop. At Keystone, Lakeside Campground is adjacent to the lake, while Hillside Campground is in a more remote area of the park and accommodates those camping with pets, so RV renters traveling with dogs should filter accordingly.
Terrain is wooded and hilly. Expect narrow park roads, tree cover that limits satellite and solar reception, and cool mountain nights even in midsummer. Bring leveling blocks.
