Campgrounds near Lorain
Lorain is a small community in Cambria County in southwestern Pennsylvania, part of the greater Johnstown area. It sits in the ridges and valleys of the Laurel Highlands, giving RV travelers quick access to reservoir camping, state park sites, and privately run RV parks within a short drive.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, on the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir in Somerset County, is the closest full-service public option, with tent sites, RV sites with electric, and rustic timber-frame cabins along the water. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Boyers Pond Campground, and Rainbow Woods Campground add private choices geared to families, weekend fishing, and shorter stays.
Blue Knob State Park anchors the region for public-land camping, spread across 6,128 acres of woodland in the northwestern tip of Bedford County. Sitting high on Pennsylvania's second-highest mountain, temperatures at the park often run several degrees cooler than the surrounding valleys, making it a favorite of RV renters looking to escape summer heat.
Things to do around Lorain
Water is central to the area. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area is the only public access to the Quemahoning Reservoir, with a boat launch, swim beach, fishing pier, nature trails, playground, and sports fields on site. Kayaking, kayak fishing, and shoreline picnics are the main draws, and the campground has pavilions for larger groups.
Blue Knob State Park adds a different pace: close to 20 miles of hiking trails, mountain biking, hunting, wildlife viewing, and a swimming pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day. In winter the park sits next to Blue Knob All Seasons Resort for downhill skiing and supports cross-country skiing on its own trails.
Johnstown, minutes west of Lorain, is a practical base for supplies, groceries, and rainy-day stops like the Johnstown Flood National Memorial and the Inclined Plane.

The primary RV season in this part of Pennsylvania runs from mid-April through late October. Blue Knob State Park's 50 tent and trailer sites open the second Friday in April and close in mid-October, and the park's cabins are available from the second Friday in April through the last weekend of October. The elevation at Blue Knob means spring arrives late and nights stay cool well into May.
Summer is peak season. Weekends at reservoir-based sites like Quemahoning Family Recreational Area book quickly, and holiday weekends fill first. Bugs are heaviest in June and early July. August tends to be warm with afternoon thunderstorms rolling off the ridges.
Fall brings reliable color through October and lighter crowds, though nights get cold fast at higher elevations. Winter camping options are limited: Blue Knob averages roughly 12 feet of snow per year, and most private campgrounds in the area shut down or run only limited winterized sites.
How to book near Lorain
Blue Knob State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system operated by DCNR through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to 11 months in advance, and reservations must be made at least three days ahead of arrival, though some sites may be available at the campground on a first-come, first-served basis. Cabins rent by the week during peak summer and have a two-day minimum in the shoulder season.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area takes reservations directly through the quefamilyrec.com booking portal or by phone, with online reservations opening March 1 for the coming season. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Boyers Pond Campground, and Rainbow Woods Campground book directly with each operator, so calling ahead is the fastest way to confirm hookups and RV length limits.
What to expect
Terrain in this corner of Pennsylvania is hilly, with tight two-lane roads climbing between ridges. RV renters driving to Blue Knob should note the approach through Pavia involves steep grades; larger rigs benefit from taking the recommended route via I-99 Exit 7 and PA 869. Most campsites at Blue Knob have electric service, with a shared water spigot and dump station rather than site hookups, and some sites can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet.
At Quemahoning, all 28 RV sites offer 30-amp electric with select sites also on 50-amp, but water is at shared spigots and a dump station rather than at each site. Cell service is spotty in the wooded valleys, and quiet hours are enforced at state park and reservoir campgrounds. Bring bug spray, layers for cool mountain nights, and a lantern; wooded sites can be very dark after sunset.
