Loretto camping overview
Loretto sits in the Allegheny Mountains of Cambria County, roughly a dozen miles north of Altoona and within easy reach of several state parks and private RV parks. The town is best known as the community founded by Prince Demetrius Gallitzin, a Russian nobleman turned Catholic missionary priest, and the surrounding uplands of the Allegheny Plateau give the area its cooler summers, forested ridges, and long shoulder seasons.
RV travelers typically base themselves at one of the private parks in the immediate area, such as Glendale Valley Campground, Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade, or Wrights Orchard Station Campground. Nearby Rock Run Recreation Area, an OHV-focused park in Patton, is another common basecamp for riders and family groups.
For state-park camping, Blue Knob State Park offers wilderness recreation on 6,128 acres of woodland in Bedford County, with Altoona, Johnstown, and Bedford all within 25 miles. Prince Gallitzin State Park, on Glendale Lake, has the largest developed campground in the region.
Things to do around Loretto
Off-road riding is a major draw. Rock Run Recreation offers 140 miles of diverse trails across 6,000 acres in the Allegheny Mountains, with routes ranging from easy to challenging and developed alongside OHV community volunteers so trails suit riders of all experience levels. Permits and day passes are handled at the park entrance.
Hikers and anglers gravitate to the state parks. Blue Knob supports skiing, hiking, mountain biking, trout fishing in Bob's Creek, and a seasonal swimming pool, while Prince Gallitzin has 26 miles of shoreline on the 1,635-acre Glendale Lake, a favorite of anglers and boaters, plus a large campground and hiking. Family visitors often add Glendale Lake's beach, marinas, and boat rentals to the itinerary.

Summer is the peak booking window across the region. Campsite reservations at Prince Gallitzin open 11 months in advance, cabins and cottages must be reserved a minimum of three days out, and sites book up fast during peak season from June through September and on holiday weekends. Rock Run also runs a full events calendar through the warm months, which pushes weekend availability tight.
Spring and fall bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and strong wildlife viewing. The varied habitats of Prince Gallitzin make it home to many types of wildlife and a rest stop during the spring and fall migrations. Elevation matters here: the elevation of Blue Knob can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than the surrounding cities.
Winter camping options are limited. Annual snowfall at Blue Knob averages about 12 feet, the developed campground closes in mid-October, and most private campgrounds in the area operate on a limited off-season schedule or by appointment only.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

How to book campgrounds near Loretto
Pennsylvania state parks use a single reservation system. Online reservations for day use and overnight facilities can be made through the DCNR system, or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations at Prince Gallitzin and Blue Knob must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance.
Private campgrounds such as Glendale Valley Campground, Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade, and Wrights Orchard Station Campground take reservations directly through their own offices. Rock Run Recreation Area handles OHV passes and on-site campsites through its park office. For summer weekends and holidays, book as far ahead as the window allows.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is hilly and wooded. Blue Knob's campground accommodates fewer than 50 sites with spaces for both tents and RVs up to 65 feet, and most sites include electric, water, and sewer hookups, though the rocky terrain requires extra padding for tent campers. Expect gravel pads, tree cover, and grades that call for careful leveling.
Weather runs cooler than nearby valley towns because of elevation, and afternoon showers are common in summer. Cell service can be patchy in the state forests around Loretto, so download maps in advance. Pennsylvania state parks limit fires to designated grills and fire rings, and out-of-state firewood must be certified heat-treated to prevent pest spread. Pets are allowed only in designated loops, so confirm pet-friendly sites when booking.
