Camping near Meyersdale, Pennsylvania
Meyersdale sits in southern Somerset County in the Laurel Highlands, a mountainous corner of southwestern Pennsylvania along the Casselman River. The borough is the highest town on the Great Allegheny Passage, positioned near the confluence of the Casselman River and Flaugherty Creek, and is known as the Maple City. The elevation and forested ridges give the area cooler summers than the surrounding lowlands, which makes it a comfortable base for RV trips from late spring through fall.
Campgrounds in the immediate area range from private RV parks with full hookups to state-park sites focused on tents and small rigs. Nearby options include Sleepy Hollow Campground, Hickory Hollow Campground, Woodland Campsites Inc, and Rainbow Woods Campground, plus New Germany State Park across the state line in Garrett County, Maryland.
Most travelers here mix riding the GAP rail-trail with day trips to nearby state parks, waterways, and small farm towns. Meyersdale itself has a restored train-station visitor center, restaurants, and grocery stops that make resupply easy between longer stays.
Things to do around Meyersdale
The Great Allegheny Passage is the anchor attraction. The 150-mile trail from Pittsburgh to Cumberland has a smooth crushed-limestone surface and a gentle grade, which makes it workable for families and casual cyclists. Signature structures near town include the 910-foot Keystone Viaduct east of town, the 1,908-foot Salisbury Viaduct above the Casselman River Valley, and the 3,291-foot Big Savage Tunnel a short ride south.
At New Germany State Park in nearby Maryland, forests hold about ten miles of multi-use trails and a small lake suitable for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. Casselman River Bridge State Park, Mount Davis (Pennsylvania's highest point), and the Spruce Forest Artisan Village near Grantsville are all short drives.
Meyersdale also hosts the Pennsylvania Maple Festival each spring, a tradition dating back to 1948.

The core camping season runs from late spring through October, and most private campgrounds and state-park loops align with that window. Spring brings maple-festival crowds in late March and early April, muddy shoulders through April, and reliable green-up by mid-May.
Summer is peak season for the GAP, so weekend sites at popular campgrounds and at New Germany State Park book out well in advance. Elevation keeps daytime temperatures moderate, but afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall is prime time for foliage riding on the rail-trail, with color typically peaking in mid-October at these elevations. Note that the Big Savage Tunnel closes from late November to early April, which cuts off through-riding to the Maryland side during the cold months.
Winter camping is limited. At New Germany State Park, campsites and driveways are not plowed during winter months, and vehicles must use the day-use area with an overnight permit. Many private parks close entirely between November and April.
How to book campgrounds near Meyersdale
Private campgrounds around Meyersdale, including Sleepy Hollow Campground, Hickory Hollow Campground, Woodland Campsites Inc, and Rainbow Woods Campground, are typically booked directly by phone or through their own websites. Summer weekends and holiday weeks fill first, so reserving several months out is standard for full-hookup RV sites.
Pennsylvania state park sites use a single statewide reservation system. Most campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, with reservations releasing at 12:00 PM Eastern Time. Advance reservations are available for almost all campsites, and unreserved sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For New Germany State Park across the state line, reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance by calling 1-888-432-CAMP or by visiting parkreservations.maryland.gov. Walk-ins are welcome when sites are available.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Meyersdale is rolling to mountainous, with narrow rural roads leading to many campgrounds. Larger Class A rigs and long fifth-wheels should check road access and site length with each park before booking. New Germany State Park in particular has a tight campground layout that is mostly designed for tent camping, so private RV parks are usually a better fit for bigger rigs.
Cell coverage is spotty in the hollows and along the trail; download maps before arrival. Nights are cool even in July due to elevation, so pack layers and a warm sleeping setup.
Black bears live in the surrounding forests, so store food and trash in the RV or hard-sided containers. The GAP trailhead in Meyersdale has parking, water, and restrooms and is a practical staging point for day rides from any nearby campground.
