Campgrounds near Oakland, Pennsylvania
Oakland is a small census-designated place in Stonycreek Township, Cambria County, bordered on the west by the city of Johnstown. It sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania at roughly 1,585 feet of elevation, which shapes both the terrain and the camping season.
RV travelers staging out of Oakland have access to a mix of private RV parks, small family-run campgrounds, and one nearby Pennsylvania state park. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area and Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing sit on reservoirs to the south in Somerset County, while Boyers Pond Campground and Rainbow Woods Campground add smaller private options within an easy drive.
Blue Knob State Park, in the northwestern tip of Bedford County west of I-99, is the largest public land base within about an hour of Oakland and covers 6,128 acres of forested mountain terrain. Together these campgrounds cover most trip styles, from full-hookup RV bases to rustic wooded sites.
Things to do near Oakland
The area is built for outdoor recreation. Blue Knob State Park sits on Pennsylvania's second-highest peak and offers fishing, hunting, hiking, mountain biking, and downhill skiing at the adjacent Blue Knob All Seasons Resort. The park has nearly 20 miles of hiking trails and connects to the 26-mile Lost Turkey Trail for longer backcountry routes into Gallitzin State Forest.
On the water, Quemahoning Family Recreational Area and Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing put boat launches, shoreline fishing, and paddling within steps of a campsite. Rainbow Woods Campground and Boyers Pond Campground work well for families that want playgrounds and quieter grounds between day trips.
Johnstown itself is a short drive west, adding the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, the Inclined Plane, and riverfront trails to a rainy-day plan.

Camping season in this part of the Laurel Highlands is shaped by elevation and snowfall. Blue Knob State Park averages roughly 12 feet of snow a year, and its 50 tent and trailer sites are open from the second Friday in April to mid-October. Most private campgrounds in Cambria and Somerset counties follow a similar April-through-October window, with a few extending into deer season in December.
Late spring brings cool nights, running streams, and thinner crowds. Summer is the peak window: warm days, active lake recreation at the reservoirs, and full campground services. Weekends in July and August book out first, especially at waterfront sites.
Fall is often the best-value season for RVers. Foliage across the ridges typically peaks from early to mid-October, temperatures stay comfortable, and weekday availability opens up. Winter closes most campgrounds, though the Blue Knob ski area continues to draw traffic to the region.
How to book near Oakland
Blue Knob State Park uses the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system, operated through ReserveAmerica. Sites and cabins can be booked up to 11 months in advance, and reservations must generally be made at least 3 days ahead of arrival. In the summer peak season, the cabins and Twin Fawn House rent by the week, with a two-day minimum in the non-peak season.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Boyers Pond Campground, and Rainbow Woods Campground are privately or locally managed, so booking is handled directly with each campground by phone or through their own websites. Summer holiday weekends fill first, so lock in dates as early as possible and confirm rig-length and hookup details when reserving.
What to expect near Oakland
Terrain in this corner of Pennsylvania is hilly, with narrow ridge roads and steep grades approaching Blue Knob. Drivers of longer Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should map routes in advance and avoid shortcut roads through the mountains, especially in wet weather.
Site styles vary. Blue Knob's tent and trailer sites sit in open fields and wooded areas, with most offering 30- or 50-amp electric service but no individual water or sewer hookups; a sanitary dump station and water spigot are available at the campground. Private campgrounds around the reservoirs are more likely to provide full hookups, along with showers and laundry.
Cell service can be spotty in the mountains. Black bears are present across the region, so food, trash, and coolers should be stored inside the RV overnight, and grills should be cleaned after use.
