Camping near Paint, Pennsylvania
Paint is a small borough in Somerset County in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania, sitting at roughly 1,800 feet of elevation in the ridge-and-valley country between Johnstown and Somerset. The area draws RV travelers with its mix of state park camping, county reservoir recreation, and small private campgrounds, most within a 30 to 45 minute drive of town.
Closest to Paint is Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, a full-service campground and boat launch on the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir. Boyers Pond Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing round out the private options, and Blue Knob State Park sits about 30 miles east on the second-highest mountain in Pennsylvania.
Expect wooded sites, cool nights even in summer, and easy access to attractions such as the Flight 93 National Memorial near Shanksville, the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail at Meyersdale, and the Johnstown Flood National Memorial. The region suits families who want lake time, hiking, and short driving days between stops.
Things to do near Paint
Water recreation anchors most trips. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area provides the only public access to the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir, with a swim beach, fishing pier, boat launch, and kayak-friendly shoreline. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing focuses on pond fishing, and Boyers Pond Campground and Rainbow Woods Campground offer quiet family recreation close to Paint.
Blue Knob State Park covers more than 6,100 acres and includes over 15 miles of hiking trails, mountain biking, a summer swimming pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the adjacent Blue Knob All Seasons Resort for downhill skiing in winter. The 26-mile Lost Turkey Trail crosses state park, state forest, and state game lands for longer treks.
History stops are close by: the Flight 93 National Memorial, the Johnstown Flood National Memorial, and the Quecreek Mine Rescue Site are all within about a 40 minute drive.

Camping in the Paint area is strongly seasonal. Most private campgrounds and the state park campground operate from mid-April through mid or late October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day and on fall foliage weekends in early to mid-October. The Blue Knob State Park tent and trailer sites open the second Friday in April and close in mid-October.
Summer weather is warm and humid but noticeably cooler than lower elevations, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Late spring and summer are the wettest months of the year, with June averaging the most rain. Fall brings crisp nights, generally drier sunny days, and strong color through the ridges.
Winter is long and snowy. Blue Knob averages roughly 12 feet of snow annually, which supports skiing at the adjacent resort but closes most tent, trailer, and private RV facilities. A handful of year-round lodging options exist in the wider Laurel Highlands for winter travelers.
How to book
Pennsylvania state park sites, including Blue Knob State Park, are reserved through the state reservation system on visitPAparks.com or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and stays must be booked at least three days ahead of arrival. Summer weekends and fall foliage dates fill early, so booking several months out is advised for holidays.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area takes reservations through its own online system on quefamilyrec.com, which opens each year on March 1 at 8:00 a.m. Online bookings must be made at least one day before arrival; same-day stays require a phone call to the park office.
Private campgrounds such as Boyers Pond Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing generally accept reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Full-hookup sites are limited across the area, so RV renters should confirm hookup type and rig length when booking.
What to expect on site
Sites in the Paint area lean rustic. Blue Knob State Park has 50 tent and trailer sites in open fields and wooded areas, with most offering electric service, a sanitary dump station and water spigot on the way out of the park, modern restrooms, and a playground, but no individual water or sewer hookups at sites. Two sites are walk-in only, and a campground host is typically on duty during peak periods.
Quemahoning Family Recreational Area offers RV sites with 30-amp electric (some with 50-amp), fire rings, picnic tables, and access to a shower house, plus tent sites and timber-frame rustic cabins. The private campgrounds in the area vary, with some offering full hookups and pull-through sites and others staying more basic.
Elevation keeps summer nights cool, cell coverage can be spotty in the mountain hollows, and black-bear country rules apply: store food and trash securely.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Paint, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Paint, PA?
Good news, an RV rental in Paint, PA is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Laurel Highlands. Travel trailers typically start around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $250, and larger Class A rigs can run $250 to $350 nightly. Because Paint sits in Somerset County and outside the Pittsburgh metro, daily rates tend to undercut what you would pay in bigger Pennsylvania cities. To score a cheap RV rental in Paint, book midweek, target shoulder months like late April or October, and use RVezy's price filter to sort by budget. Pro tip: many local hosts knock down their rate for stays of five nights or longer, so ask before you book.
visitpa.com/things-to-do/campingWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Paint, PA?
Good news, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Paint, PA, even for large Class A motorhomes. Pennsylvania does not require a commercial driver's license for personal recreational vehicles, so your everyday license from any U.S. state or Canadian province works. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older and verify their ID through the platform during checkout, which takes just a few minutes. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. First-time renters are often surprised by how quick the process is, you can go from booking confirmation to driving off in the same week.

Every RV rental in Paint booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can explore the Laurel Highlands with peace of mind. You choose the protection level that fits your trip during checkout, not the host, and each tier covers physical damage to the RV up to defined limits. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, so help is one call away if you have a flat, lockout, or mechanical issue. Pro tip: review the coverage options on the booking screen and pick the tier that matches your itinerary, a quick weekend at Laurel Hill State Park needs less than a two-week multi-state loop.

Booking is genuinely low-risk. RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation (not the host), and there is a money-back grace period right after you book in case plans shift. After that window, your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. The full policy details are presented during checkout and in your RVezy account, so you do not need to dig through individual listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your trip is protected. Pro tip: if severe weather threatens your Paint, PA RV trip, contact RVezy support right away so they can walk you through your options before your departure date.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Paint?
Absolutely, many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Paint, and your pup will love the trails around the Laurel Highlands. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see every rig that welcomes dogs, then message the host to confirm size and number. Pennsylvania state parks like Laurel Hill and Prince Gallitzin allow leashed pets at designated campsites, and dogs are welcome on most trails in Forbes State Forest. Pro tip: pack a long-line leash for Stonycreek riverside walks near Johnstown and bring a towel for muddy paws after exploring the area. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee instead of restricting pets entirely, so it is worth asking before ruling out a listing.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Paint, PA?
Yes, RV delivery in Paint is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who don't want to drive a big rig through the winding back roads of Somerset County. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your campground at Laurel Hill State Park, Yellow Creek State Park, or even a private cabin or driveway in Windber and Johnstown. They'll level it, hook up water and electric, and give you a full walkthrough before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and add your destination to see exact delivery fees, which usually range from $2 to $5 per mile round trip. It's a stress-free way to start your Paint RV trip.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks.htmlHow far can I travel on a Paint, PA RV rental?

Pittsburgh is about 75 miles west (around 90 minutes), Ohiopyle State Park and the Youghiogheny River are roughly 45 miles southwest, Gettysburg is around 140 miles east, and Niagara Falls is about 235 miles north. Pro tip: if you are planning a multi-state loop through Pennsylvania, West Virginia, or New York, message the host before booking and ask about an unlimited-mileage upgrade. It often costs less than paying overage fees on a big itinerary.

pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-hill-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Paint, PA in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Paint, PA. Summer highs sit comfortably in the mid-70s to low 80s thanks to the Allegheny elevation (Paint sits around 2,000 feet), making it noticeably cooler than Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. Fall is the showstopper, mid-September through mid-October delivers brilliant foliage across the Laurel Highlands and crisp 50 to 65 degree days. Winter is genuinely cold, with average lows in the teens and regular snowfall feeding nearby Seven Springs and Hidden Valley ski resorts. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September for peak color and shoulder-season pricing, you'll catch the leaves changing without the August crowds at Laurel Hill State Park.
weather.gov/ctp/Can I really do this if it's my first time renting an RV?
Yes, and Paint is a fantastic place for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through the generator, water tanks, propane, slide-outs, and dump procedure step by step. You can also message the host through the platform before your trip with any question, no matter how small. The roads around Paint, like PA Route 56 and US 219, are wide and well-maintained, so you're not dealing with hairpin mountain switchbacks right out of the gate. Pro tip: choose a smaller Class C motorhome or travel trailer for your first trip and book delivery so you skip the towing learning curve entirely. You'll feel like a pro by night two.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You're covered, 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, whether you blow a tire on PA Route 160 or your generator quits at Laurel Hill State Park. One call connects you with help for tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. RVezy's customer support team is also available around the clock to coordinate repairs or get you back on the road, and your host is usually just a message away for quick questions about the rig. Pro tip: before leaving Paint, save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate. That way you'll have everything ready if you ever need to make a call.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/SafetyHomePage/Pages/default.aspxCan I take my Paint, PA RV rental into other states or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Paint opens up the whole Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. You can legally drive your rental into Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and beyond, and many hosts welcome cross-state itineraries. Canada is also allowed on many rentals (Niagara Falls is only about four hours north), but you'll want to confirm with the host before booking and bring your passport. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: message the host through the listing page with your planned route, popular runs from Paint include the C&O Canal in Maryland, Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, and the Finger Lakes in New York.
cbp.gov/travelHow much should I budget for fuel on a Paint, PA RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than you'd think. Class C motorhomes around Paint average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 mpg, and campervans (Class B) can hit 16 to 20 mpg. Pennsylvania gas prices typically sit slightly above the national average, hovering around $3.40 to $3.80 per gallon, and diesel is usually a bit higher. For a typical weekend trip from Paint to Laurel Hill State Park and back (about 50 miles), you're looking at $20 to $30 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Somerset or Windber before heading deeper into the Laurel Highlands, prices climb at the smaller stations near the state parks, and use GasBuddy to spot the cheapest pumps along Route 219.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Paint?
For summer weekends, book your campground 4 to 6 months ahead, and for fall foliage weekends in late September and early October, aim for 6 months out. Pennsylvania state parks like Laurel Hill, Prince Gallitzin, and Shawnee open reservations up to 11 months in advance through the state reservation system, so the earlier the better for prime lakeside or full-hookup sites. Midweek availability is much more relaxed, you can often grab a great site just a week ahead. Pro tip: if your top choice is sold out, set up a free availability alert. Cancellations happen constantly, and a perfect site at Laurel Hill State Park can pop open the week before you go.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Paint, PA?
Driving in and around Paint is RV-friendly. The main routes (US 219, PA 56, and PA 160) are well-paved two-lane highways with gentle grades through the Allegheny Mountains, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) is just 20 minutes south for longer hauls. Watch for occasional steep grades on Route 56 between Paint and Bedford, and use lower gears descending into the Conemaugh Valley toward Johnstown. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so plan trips for the warmer months unless your host's rig has snow tires. Pro tip: avoid narrow backroads like Carpenter Park Road in a big Class A motorhome, stick to numbered state routes for stress-free driving. Pennsylvania 511 (511pa.com) gives free real-time road conditions.

You'll find everything you need within a short drive. Laurel Hill State Park offers electric hookups (20/30/50 amp) at most sites, a dump station, potable water fill stations, hot showers, and flush toilets in the warmer months. Prince Gallitzin and Shawnee State Parks have similar facilities, and several DCNR campgrounds are adding full-hookup sites with sewer included. Private parks like Bens Creek Campground near Johnstown offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Public dump stations are also available at most state parks for a small fee even if you're not staying overnight. Pro tip: top off your fresh water before leaving the campground, the spigot near the dump station at Laurel Hill State Park is the easiest fill point in the area.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/what-to-do/stay-overnight/rv-and-tent-campsites.htmlWhat is inside a typical RV rental in Paint, PA?
You will be impressed. Most RV rentals in Paint come fully equipped so you can move in and start your trip. Expect a queen or king bed, additional bunk or convertible sleeping for 4 to 8 people total, a full kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, a wet bath or full bathroom with shower, and climate control with both AC and a propane furnace (a must in the cool Allegheny evenings). Many rigs also include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, generator, and seatbelts at every travel seat. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in mountain areas, so cellular hotspots are common. Pro tip: filter your search by the exact number of sleeps and check the photos for the kitchen layout, having an oven matters more than you would think for family RV trips in Paint.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Paint%2C%20PennsylvaniaWhat add-ons and options are available with my Paint RV rental?
Hosts in Paint offer plenty of useful add-ons to tailor your trip. Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles around $0.30 to $0.45. Pro tip: bundle add-ons in a single message to your host before booking, many will discount the total when you take multiple extras, and confirm early check-in if you want to reach Laurel Hill State Park before sunset.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Paint%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, never directly with the host, which protects both you and the host. You pay for your booking with a credit or debit card at checkout, and a refundable security deposit is held separately, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is released after your trip wraps up cleanly, usually within a few business days. To avoid any deposit issues, take photos and a quick video of the RV at pickup and dropoff, return fuel and propane at the same level you received them, and dump the tanks before returning (or pay the dump fee, your call). Pro tip: keep all communication and receipts inside the RVezy app so support can resolve any issue much faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Paint during the winter months?
Yes, winter RV rental in Paint, PA is a real option and a hidden gem for ski trips. Seven Springs Mountain Resort, Hidden Valley Resort, and Laurel Mountain Ski Area are all within 30 to 45 minutes of Paint, making the area a fantastic winter basecamp. Some RVezy hosts offer four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power hookups designed for cold weather, just filter for winter-ready listings or message the host. Stick to private campgrounds that stay open year-round (most state park campgrounds close after mid-December), and plan on running off shore power instead of relying on water tanks. Pro tip: pack a heated water hose and tank pads, and ask your host to top off the propane before pickup, winter heating burns through it fast in the Allegheny cold.
