Campgrounds near Portage, Pennsylvania
Portage sits in the Allegheny Mountains of Cambria County in west-central Pennsylvania, between Johnstown and Altoona. The surrounding terrain is forested ridge-and-valley country with ready access to state parks, state game lands, and off-highway-vehicle trails. Most RV travelers use Portage as a base for lake days at Prince Gallitzin State Park, downhill and cross-country skiing at Blue Knob, or trail riding at Rock Run.
Campground options within an easy drive range from state-run sites to private RV parks. Blue Knob State Park offers year-round wilderness adventures on 6,128 acres of woodland in the northwestern tip of Bedford County, west of I-99, with Altoona, Johnstown and Bedford all within 25 miles. Closer to Altoona, Wrights Orchard Station Campground provides sites just off I-99, while Glendale Valley Campground sits near Prince Gallitzin State Park.
For riders, Rock Run Recreation Area anchors a large off-road trail network in northern Cambria County. Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade rounds out the closer private options.
Things to do near Portage
The area suits families who want a mix of water, trails, and small-town attractions. Prince Gallitzin State Park cradles the 1,635-acre Glendale Lake, with 26 miles of shoreline that draw anglers, boaters, and swimmers. Glendale Valley Campground sits close enough to use as a lake basecamp.
Off-road riders head to Rock Run Recreation Area, which offers more than 140 miles of trails popular with ATV, dirt bike, OHV and side-by-side riders across northern Cambria and southern Clearfield counties. On-site camping includes over 350 primitive and 16 electric campsites spread between six campgrounds.
At Blue Knob State Park, hikers, mountain bikers, and anglers use the trail network in warmer months, and the adjacent Blue Knob All Seasons Resort sits on the ski slope with the highest elevation in Pennsylvania. Altoona adds the Railroaders Memorial Museum and Horseshoe Curve for a rainy-day plan.

Camping season in the Portage area is shaped by cold, snowy winters and short, warm summers. In nearby Johnstown, temperatures typically vary from about 21°F to 82°F over the course of the year, with January the coldest month and July the warmest. Many private RV parks operate spring through fall, and public campgrounds follow a similar window.
At Blue Knob State Park, the 50 tent and trailer sites are open from the second Friday in April to mid-October, in open fields and wooded areas, with two walk-in sites. Elevation makes shoulder seasons cool: expect frost in April and again by mid-October, and pack layers even for summer nights.
Spring can be muddy on unpaved trails and mountain roads after snowmelt. Summer brings the busiest weekends at lakes and OHV parks, with July and August the peak booking window. Fall delivers strong foliage across the Alleghenies through October, and rifle deer season in late November draws hunters to nearby state game lands. Winter shifts activity to skiing at Blue Knob and to weatherized private parks.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

Booking and reservations
Pennsylvania state park campgrounds, including Blue Knob State Park, are reserved through the state's ReserveAmerica-powered system. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, with new inventory released at noon Eastern. Popular summer weekends and holiday periods fill first, so book the 11-month window if the trip is time-sensitive.
Private campgrounds handle their own reservations. Contact Wrights Orchard Station Campground and Glendale Valley Campground directly through their websites or by phone for site availability.
Rock Run has its own rules for RV campers. It is a riding facility rather than a general campground, so camping is intended for people using the trails, and site inventory is limited to primitive sites plus 16 electric hookups at Clayworks. Reserve early for event weekends like Summer Blast.
What to expect on the ground
The Portage area is rural and hilly. Approaches to campgrounds include narrow two-lane roads, steep grades, and occasional gravel access lanes, so drivers of larger rigs should plan routes carefully and use a GPS built for RVs. Cell coverage is uneven off the I-99 corridor.
Site styles vary widely. At Blue Knob State Park most sites have electric service, with water, a sanitary dump station, modern restrooms, and playground equipment available. Rock Run offers primitive sites plus a small block of 30- and 50-amp electric sites at Clayworks Campground. Private parks in the area lean toward gravel pads suitable for a range of RV sizes.
Expect black bears, deer, and biting insects in summer. Store food properly, bring bug spray, and confirm current fire restrictions before lighting a fire ring. Evenings cool quickly at elevation, even after hot afternoons.
