Campgrounds near Rockwood, PA
Rockwood sits in Somerset County in southwestern Pennsylvania, along the Casselman River and the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail. The area is part of the Laurel Highlands, a mountainous region that includes state parks, ski resorts, and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. Camping options within a short drive range from full-hookup private resorts to state-park loops with electric and non-electric sites.
Laurel Hill State Park consists of 4,062 acres of mountainous terrain in Somerset County, with the 63-acre Laurel Hill Lake as a focal point. The park sits roughly a fifteen-minute drive northwest of Rockwood and is surrounded by thousands of acres of state park and state forest lands. Private options such as Hickory Hollow Campground, Lost Mountain Campground, Scottyland Camping Resort, and Pioneer Lakes RV Park add family-oriented amenities like pools, playgrounds, and stocked ponds.
Rockwood works well as a base for cyclists riding the GAP between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, and for RV travelers combining Ohiopyle whitewater, Seven Springs, and Flight 93 National Memorial in one trip.
Things to do near Rockwood
The Great Allegheny Passage runs directly through Rockwood, offering flat, crushed-limestone cycling for all ages. Ohiopyle State Park, about thirty minutes west, delivers Youghiogheny River whitewater rafting, waterfalls, and additional trail miles.
At Laurel Hill State Park, visitors can hike through oak and maple forests, bike mountainous woodland trails, paddle Laurel Hill Lake by kayak or stand-up paddleboard, swim at the beach, fish for bass and trout, and use a 120-mile trail network that connects to the adjoining Forbes State Forest for winter snowmobiling. Seven Springs and Hidden Valley resorts add skiing, snow tubing, and lift-served mountain biking.
Architecture fans can tour Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, and families often add stops at Living Treasures Animal Park and Idlewild amusement park.

Peak camping runs through summer, when campsites can book up fast, especially on holiday weekends. Lake swimming, GAP cycling, and river paddling are all in season from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekends at Laurel Hill State Park and the nearby private resorts fill quickly during this window, especially around July Fourth and Labor Day.
Spring brings cool nights, muddy trails, and the highest stream flows for whitewater on the Youghiogheny. Wildflowers peak in April and May. Fall is arguably the best RV season in the Laurel Highlands: cooler days, low bug pressure, and a strong hardwood color show that typically peaks in mid- to late October.
Winters are cold and snowy. Laurel Hill State Park is open year round, and nearby Seven Springs draws ski and snowboard traffic from December through March. Some private campgrounds close or limit services in winter, so travelers should confirm hookup availability, water service, and gate access before arrival.
How to book a campsite near Rockwood
Laurel Hill State Park's campsites, cottages, and lodges can be reserved via the Pennsylvania State Parks website. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Peak-season weekends and holidays often sell out the moment the eleven-month window opens, so planning ahead matters.
Private campgrounds including Hickory Hollow Campground, Lost Mountain Campground, Scottyland Camping Resort, and Pioneer Lakes RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Deposits and cancellation policies vary by property.
For RV renters, confirm rig length limits, hookup type (30 vs 50 amp), and slide-out clearance when booking. State-park loops mix electric and non-electric sites, and full hookups are limited.
What to expect
Terrain around Rockwood is mountainous, with winding two-lane roads, steep grades, and low-hanging tree canopy on some campground access routes. Larger Class A rigs should plan routes carefully, particularly off PA 31 and PA 653.
State-park loops at Laurel Hill offer flush toilets, warm showers, and pet-friendly options. More than half of the campsites have electric or full hookups, and camping cottages and lodges are also available. A dump station is on site. Private resorts tend to add pools, camp stores, and organized weekend activities.
Cell service is spotty in the hollows and along the Casselman River. Bears are present in the region, so food storage rules apply, and firewood must generally be purchased locally to limit invasive pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Rockwood, PA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Rockwood, PA?
An RV rental in Rockwood is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Laurel Highlands. Travel trailers typically run $80 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes $150 to $275, and Class A rigs $250 to $400. Because Rockwood sits along the Great Allegheny Passage, weekends in peak biking season (June through October) book fastest and cost a little more. To find a cheap RV rental in Rockwood, search midweek dates, look for hosts offering weekly discounts, and consider a travel trailer with delivery included so you skip towing. Booking 4 to 8 weeks ahead is the sweet spot for selection and savings.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rockwood%2C%20PennsylvaniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Rockwood, PA?
You're in luck: for almost every RV rental in Rockwood, PA, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. Pennsylvania only requires a non-commercial Class B license for single motorhomes over 26,000 pounds, and a non-commercial Class A for combinations over 26,001 pounds with trailers over 10,000 pounds, which is well beyond the size of typical campervan, Class C, and travel trailer rentals on RVezy. You must be 25 or older to rent through RVezy, and ID verification is handled right inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're ready to roll into the Laurel Highlands.
pa.gov/agencies/dmv/driver-services/licenses-and-photo-ids/license-types-restrictionsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Rockwood?
You can book with confidence: every RVezy booking in Rockwood includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are never out there alone on PA Route 31 or US 219. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip. This is not traditional auto insurance, but it provides real financial peace of mind whether you are heading to Laurel Hill State Park or driving toward Ohiopyle. Pro tip: take a couple of minutes of walkaround photos at pickup with your host to document the RV's condition.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy for an RV rental in Rockwood, PA?
Booking is low risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, so the same terms apply to every listing. There is a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and after that, refund amounts depend on how far out your trip start date is. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit. The full, up-to-date policy is on the RVezy Help Center. Tip: book early to lock in the best Rockwood rigs for foliage and summer weekends, then finalize your campground reservations next.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Rockwood?
Yes, and Rockwood is a fantastic dog town. Many hosts offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Rockwood: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host about your dog's size and breed. Once you are here, Laurel Hill State Park welcomes leashed dogs on most trails (not on the swimming beach) and the Great Allegheny Passage trail is dog-friendly through Rockwood. Ohiopyle State Park, about 25 miles west, also allows leashed dogs on most trails. Pack a long lead and a collapsible water bowl and you are set for a tail-wagging trip.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-hill-state-park.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Rockwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Rockwood is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will drop the rig at Laurel Hill State Park, Hickory Hollow Campground, Mountain Pines Campground, or a private site along the Casselman River, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system. Just filter for Delivery on RVezy and message the host with your campground name and arrival date. Delivery fees usually scale with distance, and most Rockwood-area hosts cover a 30 to 50 mile radius, which easily reaches Ohiopyle, Seven Springs, and Confluence.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rockwood%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow far can I drive, and what's a popular RV road trip from Rockwood?
Rockwood is perfectly positioned for a memorable RV road trip. Each host sets the mileage policy on their listing, and some offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is great if you're planning to roam. Realistic distances from town: Ohiopyle State Park (Fallingwater) is about 25 miles west, Flight 93 National Memorial is 25 miles north, Pittsburgh is 80 miles northwest, Cumberland, MD (the southern end of the Great Allegheny Passage) is 60 miles south, and Deep Creek Lake, MD is 45 miles south. A classic Rockwood RV trip is a 3-night loop through Ohiopyle, Confluence, and Meyersdale chasing covered bridges and waterfalls.
visitpa.com/listing/rockwood/280/Where are the best campgrounds near Rockwood, PA?
You have excellent options for RV camping in Rockwood. Laurel Hill State Park (about 8 miles west) offers around 260 sites with electric and full-hookup loops on a 63-acre lake, generally open mid-April through late October, with nightly rates starting around $28. Hickory Hollow Campground on Big Hickory Road has level pull-through sites, a pool, and is minutes from the GAP trailhead. Mountain Pines Campground features full hookups and family amenities. Husky Haven and Pioneer Lakes RV Park round out the local favorites. Insider tip: ask about sites near the pet loop at Laurel Hill for easier RV access and a more open layout.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-hill-state-park/stay.htmlWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Rockwood?
Rockwood is genuinely a four-season destination, and there's no wrong time to come. Mid-May through mid-October is prime, with summer highs around 78 to 82 F and cool nights in the 50s thanks to the elevation near 3,212-foot Mt. Davis (PA's highest point). Late September through mid-October explodes with fall foliage along the Great Allegheny Passage, and it's the smart-money season: smaller crowds, lower nightly rates, and stunning color. Winter (December to March) brings reliable snow and access to Seven Springs and Hidden Valley ski resorts, perfect if you book a winterized rig. Pro tip: lock in a foliage weekend by mid-July, because Laurel Hill sites disappear fast.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Is that okay for a Rockwood trip?
You've got this, and Rockwood is a great place to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, slides, propane, water, and dump procedures before you ever leave. For first time renting an RV, many guests in Rockwood choose a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer with delivery, so the host sets it up at the campground and you only have to live in it. The local roads suit beginners: PA 31 and US 219 are wide and well-maintained, with gas stations in Somerset (8 miles north). If you'd rather not drive at all, simply book a delivered rig and relax.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are covered 24/7. Every RVezy booking in Rockwood includes round-the-clock roadside assistance for breakdowns, flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing, whether you are at Laurel Hill State Park or pulled over on US 219. Your host is also a quick text or call away to troubleshoot quirks specific to their rig. RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number in your phone before leaving town, because cell service can fade on the back roads near Mt. Davis.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I cross state lines on my RV road trip from Rockwood?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Rockwood. Most hosts welcome trips into Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, New York, and Virginia, all within a half-day's drive: Deep Creek Lake, MD is about 45 miles south, Cumberland, MD (the GAP's southern terminus) is about 60 miles south, and Washington, D.C. is about 175 miles southeast via I-68. Travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval and insurance confirmation, so message the host first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Confirm your route in the listing message thread before you go.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel costs should I budget for an RV trip from Rockwood?
Fuel is easier to budget than most renters expect. Pennsylvania gas prices in the Rockwood area typically run a bit above the national average, and you'll find stations in Somerset (8 miles north on US 219) and along PA 31. Realistic mileage: campervans get 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, Class A rigs 6 to 9 mpg, and a tow vehicle with a travel trailer about 10 to 14 mpg. For a typical 3-night loop covering 250 miles in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Somerset before heading to Ohiopyle, because options thin out west of US 40.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Rockwood?
Earlier is better, and the system is simple. Laurel Hill State Park takes reservations up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks reservation system (1-888-PA-PARKS or the DCNR website), with a minimum 3-day lead time. For summer weekends, holidays, and the September to mid-October foliage window, book as soon as your 11-month window opens. Private campgrounds like Hickory Hollow and Mountain Pines usually have more last-minute flexibility, often bookable 2 to 6 weeks out. Local insider tip: if Laurel Hill is sold out, set a cancellation alert and check Tuesday mornings, when many weekend bookings get released.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-hill-state-park/stay.htmlWhat are the local driving conditions like around Rockwood?
Driving conditions around Rockwood are friendly for RVs once you know the terrain. PA 31, US 219, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) are the main arteries, all paved and well-signed, with the turnpike's Somerset Exit 110 just 10 miles north of town. Expect rolling Laurel Highlands grades, some 6 to 8 percent climbs near Mt. Davis, and tight curves on smaller roads like Trent Road into Laurel Hill State Park, so take it slow and downshift on descents. Winter brings snow from late November through March, which is why a winterized rig matters off-season. Pro tip: avoid PA 653 in heavy fog, common on summer mornings; stick to US 219 instead.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Rockwood?
You'll be well taken care of. Laurel Hill State Park has 262 sites with flush toilets, hot showers, electric and full-hookup options, a dump station, and a swimming beach on the 63-acre lake. Hickory Hollow Campground offers full hookups, a pool, laundry, and a camp store. Mountain Pines includes water park access, fishing lakes, and full RV hookups. For dumping and water fills outside campgrounds, Laurel Hill's dump station is open to campers, and most private parks offer day-use dump for a small fee. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank in town before arrival, since some Rockwood-area campsites only offer hookups in higher tier loops.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/laurel-hill-state-park/stay.htmlWhat features and amenities come with a Rockwood RV rental?
You'll feel at home from minute one. A typical motorhome rental in Rockwood comes with real beds (queen or king plus convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, propane furnace, dining and lounging space, and seatbelted travel seats. Most Class C and Class A rigs include a generator for off-grid power, and many hosts include a TV; Wi-Fi varies, so ask. Campervan rentals in Rockwood are leaner but include a bed, kitchenette, and often a portable toilet. Pro tip: cell signal weakens near Mt. Davis, so download offline maps and your GAP trail guide before leaving town.
visitpa.com/listing/rockwood/280/What add-ons and pickup options should I expect when I rent an RV in Rockwood, PA?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for a Rockwood RV rental include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, generators, bike racks (huge for the Great Allegheny Passage), and propane refills. Mileage policies vary: many hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.50 each, and a handful list unlimited mileage. Pickup is usually at the host's location near Rockwood, Somerset, or Confluence, with delivery available for an added fee. Pro tip: add a bike rack and pedal the GAP from Rockwood to Meyersdale (about 12 miles) for an unforgettable afternoon.
gaptrail.org/amenities/rockwood-pennsylvania/How do payments and the security deposit work on an RVezy Rockwood booking?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, and no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment to cover potential incidentals like damage, missing items, or extra cleaning, and it is released after the RV is returned in the condition you got it. To avoid issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff with your host, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in the agreement, and empty the tanks at a dump station such as the one at Laurel Hill State Park before drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Rockwood in winter, and how do I prep for cold weather?
Yes, winter rentals are absolutely a thing in Rockwood, and the Laurel Highlands are a snowy playground from December through March, with average winter lows in the teens and 20s and several feet of snowfall annually thanks to the elevation. Look for listings marked as four-season or winterized, which include heated holding tanks, insulated underbellies, propane furnace, and shore power readiness. Seven Springs Mountain Resort (15 miles northwest) and Hidden Valley are easy day trips, and Laurel Hill State Park keeps cottages and lodges open year-round. Pro tip: book a site with full hookups so you can stay warm without draining your fresh tank, and pack a heated water hose for sub-freezing nights.
