Campgrounds near Salix, Pennsylvania

Salix sits in Cambria County in the Allegheny Mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania, within easy reach of Johnstown, Altoona, and Bedford. The area is defined by high-elevation woodland, small lakes and reservoirs, and a mix of state park campgrounds and privately run RV parks. Most trips start at Blue Knob State Park, a 6,128-acre wooded park in the northwestern tip of Bedford County west of I-99, with Altoona, Johnstown, and Bedford all within 25 miles. Water-based camping centers on Quemahoning Family Recreational Area, which provides public access to the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir and operates as a full-service campground and recreation area. South of Salix, Shawnee State Park covers 3,983 acres in Bedford County and is built around Shawnee Lake, a 451-acre warm-water reservoir. Smaller options round out the choices for RV travelers: Boyers Pond Campground and Natures Getaway RV Park and Campground both sit within a short drive of Salix and offer hookup sites for travel trailers and motorhomes.

Things to do near Salix

Blue Knob is built for active trips. The park has close to 20 miles of hiking trails ranging from short day-hikes to longer treks, with some routes designated for mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling in winter. A CCC-era outdoor swimming pool is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, and trout anglers target native brook trout and stocked trout placed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Shawnee Lake is the main draw to the south. Three boat launches serve electric and non-powered boats only; gas-powered boats are prohibited, and the sand-and-turf beach is open daily from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The Quemahoning Reservoir adds a swim beach, kayak and paddleboard access, and lakeside fishing for families basing out of the Que.

The camping calendar in this corner of Pennsylvania is short and predictable. Blue Knob State Park's tent and trailer sites are generally open from the second Friday in April through mid to late October, with the park itself remaining accessible year-round for day use. At Shawnee State Park the camping season runs from the second Friday in April into late December, campers may stay up to 14 consecutive nights from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and Saturday reservations during the summer season require a two-night minimum. Elevation matters. The elevation at Blue Knob can make air temperatures several degrees cooler than the surrounding cities, and annual snowfall at the park averages about 12 feet. Spring arrivals should expect wet trails and cold nights; late May through early October is the reliable window for tent campers and family RV trips. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill first at the state parks and the Que. Fall brings foliage across the ridges and cooler nights, with hunting seasons active on state park and state game lands, so blaze orange is a sensible add for anyone hiking off the main trails.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

What an incredible first experience! Tony is an outstanding host. He thoroughly went over the RV with me and communication was on point. The value matched the cost. The RV was so fun to drive. It was super clean, and very comfortable. We will be renting again for sure!

This was a great RV for our camping trip to see fall foliage. It slept our group of 3 adults and 2 children very comfortably (particularly with a slider that allowed for a soft and full queen bed), had space to socialize, play games, and warm up from the outside. The stove and oven cooked beautifully and had enough heat to power through a large meal; the water could be adjusted to very hot, which was fantastic. The bathroom was roomy enough for a shower and sink. The fridge/freezer had plenty of space and kept everything nice and cold. I can’t say enough good things about the heat, it was powerful and immediate; we ended up being in some unexpectedly frosty and windy weather but never even noticed inside. Everyone slept like babies! There is storage space in a large compartment on the outside and multiple small cabinets for things inside. The power and water hook-up is a breeze, the dumping the same. You have large windows and plenty of inside lighting. As the driver, I appreciated how large my windshield viewing area was and it handled well. The only small flaw was the cracking and flaking of the seat and armrest upholstery but that was strictly cosmetic and had no negative impact on our enjoyment. Tony was a pleasure to deal with and very responsive. A positive experience all the way around!

How to book campgrounds near Salix

Pennsylvania state parks share a single reservation system. Online reservations for overnight facilities can be made through the state's ReserveAmerica portal or by calling toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Reservations must be made at least three days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, which applies to both Blue Knob and Shawnee, and the booking window opens at noon Eastern time. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area is booked directly through its operator rather than the state system; the campground office handles site assignments, cabin rentals, and pavilion bookings. For Boyers Pond Campground and Natures Getaway RV Park and Campground, reserve directly with the property. For any holiday weekend, book several months out.

What to expect on site

State park sites are functional rather than resort-style. Shawnee State Park has approximately 200 campsites that accommodate tents or trailers, each site has a picnic table and fire ring, and many sites have electric service with some offering full hookups including sewer, water, and electricity. A sanitary dump station and centrally located shower houses with flush toilets, showers, and large utility sinks for dishwashing are provided. Blue Knob is more rustic. The park provides options that include tent sites, camping cottages, and yurts, and most tent sites lack hookups for electricity or water, though a dump station, potable water, restrooms, and a playground are on site. Maximum RV length at Blue Knob is around 30 feet. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania state parks, so download park maps before arrival.
