Campgrounds near Sankertown, Pennsylvania
Sankertown is a small borough in Cambria County on the western edge of the Allegheny Front, between Ebensburg and Altoona. The surrounding terrain climbs quickly from the Conemaugh Valley into the ridges of the Laurel Highlands, which shapes both the campground mix and the driving times. Most RV travelers use this area as a base for exploring central Pennsylvania's mountain parks, ATV trails, and rail heritage sites.
Private parks close to town include Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade and Glendale Valley Campground, both easy overnight stops for travelers heading through on Route 22 or Interstate 99. Wrights Orchard Station Campground sits just off I-99 near Duncansville, roughly a 20-minute drive south, and pitches itself as an Altoona-area base with a rail theme.
Public land is nearby but takes longer to reach. Blue Knob State Park sits atop Pennsylvania's second-highest peak at 3,146 feet, with an average annual snowfall of about 12 feet, roughly an hour south in Bedford County, while Rock Run Recreation Area near Patton provides ATV and OHV camping about 30 minutes north.
Things to do around Sankertown
Outdoor activity here is built around ridges, trails, and water. Blue Knob State Park takes its name from Blue Knob, Pennsylvania's second-highest peak at 3,146 feet, and the resort at the mountain offers skiing, snowboarding, and tubing in winter, plus cross-country skiing along the park's trail network. The 26-mile Lost Turkey Trail traverses the park and connects into Gallitzin State Forest for longer backcountry routes.
Motorized recreation is the draw at Rock Run Recreation Area, with a large trail network in the Allegheny Mountains open to ATV, UTV, and dirt bike riders across a range of experience levels.
For family day trips, Altoona is 15 to 20 minutes away and holds the Railroaders Memorial Museum and the Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark. DelGrosso's Amusement Park in Tipton is another common stop for RV families in the region.

The prime RV window in this part of Pennsylvania runs from late spring through mid-October. The cabins at Blue Knob State Park are available from the second Friday in April through the last weekend of October, and the campground opens the second Friday in April and closes in mid-October, which is typical of Pennsylvania state park seasons. Private parks in the Altoona area generally open earlier and close later than the state parks.
Summer weekends and holidays fill first, especially anything near ATV trails or amusement parks. Fall brings hardwood color across the ridges in early to mid-October and is a strong shoulder-season window for cooler nights and fewer crowds.
Winter changes the calculus. Elevations matter: the elevation of the park can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than surrounding cities, and annual snowfall averages about 12 feet. Most public campgrounds close, but Blue Knob remains a draw for downhill skiing at the adjacent resort and cross-country skiing on the trail network.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

How to book campgrounds near Sankertown
Pennsylvania state park sites are reserved through the state's central system. Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, and must be made 3 days ahead of arrival through the online portal. Online reservations use visitPAparks.com, or the toll-free line at 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757). Some sites may be available only from the campground on a first-come-first-served basis, so calling the park to check availability is worthwhile.
Private campgrounds such as Wrights Orchard Station Campground and Glendale Valley Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone. Rock Run Recreation Area handles camping through its own office, typically alongside trail permits.
For peak summer weekends, book RV sites 8 to 12 weeks out. Holiday weekends and ATV events at Rock Run sell out earliest.
What to expect around Sankertown
Expect mountain terrain and variable microclimates. Sites near Blue Knob and along the Allegheny Front sit at higher elevations with cooler nights, more wind, and heavier snowfall than the valley floors around Altoona. Cell service is spotty in the state park and thin along the ridgelines, so downloading maps before leaving pavement is wise.
Roads in and out of the parks include grades and switchbacks. Larger Class A rigs should stick to the private parks along the I-99 corridor, such as Wrights Orchard Station Campground, which handles bigger RVs without steep mountain approach roads.
Wildlife includes black bears, so food storage rules apply at all campgrounds in the area. Firewood should be purchased locally to comply with Pennsylvania's rules on moving untreated wood, and quiet hours are enforced at both public and private parks.
