Camping near Somerset, Pennsylvania
Somerset sits in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania at roughly 2,200 feet of elevation, which keeps summer temperatures noticeably cooler than the surrounding lowlands. Camping options in the area sit at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 feet, creating summer temperatures typically 5 to 10 degrees lower than surrounding lowlands. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring nearby state parks, the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail, and the Flight 93 National Memorial.
Private campgrounds close to town include Woodland Campsites Inc, Hickory Hollow Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, Pioneer Lakes RV Park, and Lost Mountain Campground. These range from smaller wooded parks to larger RV-focused resorts with full hookups and pull-through sites, giving campers options for both weekend trips and longer stays.
State-park camping is also within a short drive. The region includes Laurel Hill, Kooser, and Ohiopyle State Parks, offering a mix of wooded tent sites, RV hookups, and rustic cabins within an hour of town. Laurel Hill State Park covers 4,062 acres in Somerset County and runs a large family campground divided into four loops with modern electric and full-hookup sites.
Things to do around Somerset
Water recreation is central to a Somerset trip. Laurel Hill State Park centers on the 63-acre Laurel Hill Lake for swimming, boating, and fishing, with about 15 miles of hiking trails through forests and streams. Gasoline-powered boats are prohibited on the lake, but electric motors, kayaks, canoes, and rowboats are all allowed, and a summer concession rents boats.
Ohiopyle State Park, about an hour west, is the regional draw for whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River and for waterfall hiking. Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, Kentuck Knob, and the Flight 93 National Memorial are all within reach of the area.
Families traveling with kids often combine a day of paddling or biking on the Great Allegheny Passage with an afternoon at a private campground pool or playground. Seven Springs and Hidden Valley ski resorts are close by and run summer mountain-biking and chairlift operations.

Peak RV season in the Somerset area runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when lake swimming, rafting, and full campground amenities are in operation. The best time to camp near Somerset is generally between June and August. Because of the elevation, summer nights cool off quickly and a light jacket is useful even in July.
Spring and fall are strong shoulder seasons. May and June bring some of the wettest weather of the year, with frequent afternoon showers, while September and October offer cooler days, lower humidity, and vivid fall foliage across the Laurel Highlands. Many private campgrounds in the area operate seasonally from spring through late October, though Laurel Hill and Ohiopyle State Parks remain open year-round.
Winter is cold and snowy. Many private facilities close after mid-October due to freezing conditions and hard freezes on water lines. A limited number of parks stay open for cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and winter cabin stays, but RV campers should confirm road access, hookup availability, and freeze protection before booking a cold-weather trip.
How to book a site
State-park sites in Pennsylvania are booked through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations system operated on ReserveAmerica. Most campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance of the arrival date, with new inventory released at 12:00 PM Eastern Time. The noon release time is unusual compared with other state park systems, which typically open early in the morning.
For summer weekends and holidays at Laurel Hill, Kooser, and Ohiopyle, plan to book at the 11-month mark. Popular sites at these parks fill quickly on summer weekends and holiday periods, and a two-night minimum applies to summer weekends.
Private parks such as Woodland Campsites Inc, Hickory Hollow Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, Pioneer Lakes RV Park, and Lost Mountain Campground each handle their own reservations by phone or through their websites. Call ahead to confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and any minimum-stay rules on holiday weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in the Laurel Highlands tend to be wooded and shaded, with soft ground that can hold water after storms. Bring leveling blocks: many campgrounds sit on rolling terrain, and even developed sites are rarely perfectly flat. Reviewers at Laurel Hill note that RV loops sit on a noticeable slope, with several pull-through sites requiring extra leveling.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along I-70/I-76 but can drop off inside state parks and deeper into the Laurel Ridge. Download maps offline before heading out to trailheads or river put-ins.
Woodland Campsites Inc sits directly across from Somerset Lake and offers wooded sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups plus a sanitary disposal station. Expect black bears in the region, so use campground food-storage guidance, keep coolers inside the RV overnight, and avoid leaving trash at the picnic table.

visitpa.com/explore/regions/laurel-highlands/somerset/What license do I need to rent an RV in Somerset, PA?
Good news for first-time renters: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Somerset, PA. Pennsylvania does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or trailers, even the larger Class A rigs you'll see on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork to chase down. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. That's genuinely it, you'll be cleared to roll out toward Laurel Hill State Park in no time.
dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/Driver-Licensing/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Somerset protected if something goes wrong?

Plans shift, and RVezy is built to flex with you. Every booking is backed by an RVezy cancellation policy (not set by individual hosts) that includes a grace period where you can cancel for a full refund. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far out you cancel. You will see the full details during checkout and inside your RVezy account, so there are no surprises. If a host has to cancel, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits so your Laurel Highlands RV trip stays on track. Book months ahead with confidence knowing you still have flexibility if life gets in the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Somerset, PA?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Somerset is one of the most popular ways families travel here. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see hosts who welcome dogs, and message them in advance about any size or breed notes. Somerset is genuinely dog-country: Laurel Hill State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and in designated pet camping loops, Pioneer Lakes RV Park has a large fenced dog park, and the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trailheads in nearby Rockwood and Confluence are leash-friendly for miles. Pro tip: pack a tick remover, the wooded ridges around Mount Davis are beautiful but tick-active from May through October.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LaurelHillStatePark/Pages/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Somerset?
Yes, RV delivery in Somerset is widely available and it's a game-changer for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer directly to your campsite at Laurel Hill State Park, Kooser State Park, Pioneer Lakes RV Park, or even Seven Springs Mountain Resort, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. To find this option, switch on the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your campground address to see per-mile delivery fees up front. This is the easiest way to enjoy a Somerset RV trip without ever having to back a trailer down a forest road.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/KooserStatePark/Pages/default.aspxHow far can I travel on a Somerset RV road trip?
You're sitting on one of the best launchpads in the Mid-Atlantic for an RV road trip from Somerset. Fallingwater and Ohiopyle State Park are about 35 miles west (under an hour), the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville is just 15 miles north, Pittsburgh is 75 miles west on the PA Turnpike, Deep Creek Lake, MD is 50 miles south, and Washington, D.C. sits about 175 miles southeast. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy, ranging from 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage, so filter and compare before you book. Pro tip: the Turnpike (I-76) is the fastest east-west route and accepts E-ZPass.
nps.gov/flni/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Somerset, PA?
You'll be spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Somerset start with Laurel Hill State Park, which offers 264 wooded sites with electric hookups around a 63-acre lake just 10 miles west of town. Kooser State Park has a smaller, peaceful 43-site loop in a hemlock forest. Pioneer Lakes RV Park on Trent Road features 200+ full-hookup sites, two fishing lakes, and a big dog park. Hidden Valley Resort and Seven Springs Mountain Resort both have RV-friendly options for skiers in winter. For a quieter base, check Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park near Mill Run. Book state-park sites through the Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system as early as 11 months out for summer holidays.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/FindAPark/LaurelHillStatePark/Pages/default.aspxWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Somerset?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Somerset, with daytime highs from 70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit and crisp evenings perfect for campfires. September and early October bring jaw-dropping fall foliage across the Laurel Highlands, arguably the best season of all. Spring (April to early May) is quieter and great for the Pennsylvania Maple Festival. Winter is no slouch either: Somerset County is one of the snowiest inhabited counties in the U.S., averaging 150+ inches at the higher elevations, so a winter-ready RV rental near Seven Springs or Hidden Valley turns ski weekends into something magical. Avoid early-August humidity if storms aren't your thing.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Somerset?
You're going to be totally fine, and Somerset is actually a forgiving place for a first time renting an RV. The roads around town are rural, traffic is light outside of Turnpike interchanges, and most state-park campgrounds have generous pull-through sites. Every RVezy host gives an in-person walkthrough at pickup, covering the propane, water, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. If you'd rather skip the drive entirely, book a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: practice a few right turns in the Somerset Walmart lot off North Center Avenue before heading into the hills.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have an RV breakdown near Somerset?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 31, a dead battery at Laurel Hill State Park, or a tow out of a muddy site at Kooser State Park is one phone call away from being handled. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip, and your host is just a message away for vehicle-specific quirks. Cell service is solid along the I-70/I-76 corridor and most of US 219 but gets patchy near Mount Davis, so download offline maps before exploring the Forbes State Forest area.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Somerset RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel from Somerset is totally normal, this is a road-trip town. Maryland is 30 miles south on US 219, West Virginia is about 50 miles southwest, Ohio is two hours west, and New York's Allegheny region is roughly three hours north. Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the specific host and the RV's insurance, so message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend south of the U.S. border. Popular multi-state loops from Somerset include Pittsburgh to Deep Creek Lake to Ohiopyle, an easy long weekend.
cbp.gov/travelWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting fuel for your Somerset RV trip is easier than you'd think. Class B campervans typically get 18-22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes 10-14 mpg, and larger Class A rigs 7-10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but expect a 25-30% mpg drop while towing. Pennsylvania gas prices tend to run a bit above the national average, so plan accordingly and fill up off the Turnpike where it's cheaper, the Sheetz and GetGo stations along US 219 and Route 31 in Somerset are local favorites. Pro tip: most diesel motorhomes can fuel at the truck-friendly Pilot in New Stanton, 25 miles west.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Somerset?
For peak summer weekends and fall-foliage October, book Pennsylvania state-park campgrounds like Laurel Hill, Kooser, and Ohiopyle as soon as the 11-month reservation window opens through the official DCNR reservation system. Private parks like Pioneer Lakes RV Park and Yogi Bear's Jellystone fill up 3-6 months ahead for July 4th and Labor Day. Midweek stays in May, June, and September can often be grabbed 2-4 weeks out. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, check Sunday-Wednesday windows, you'll find availability that vanishes on Fridays, and many campgrounds offer weekday discounts that pair beautifully with a cheap RV rental in Somerset.
pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Somerset?
Driving in Somerset is mostly relaxed mountain motoring with a few things to know. You're at about 2,200 feet elevation in the Laurel Highlands, so expect rolling grades, some 6-8% climbs on US 219 and SR 31, and the occasional sharp curve near Seven Springs. The PA Turnpike (I-70/I-76) cuts right through town at Exit 110 and is well-maintained and RV-friendly. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially around Forbes State Forest, and slow down on covered-bridge backroads, you'll find 10 historic covered bridges in the county with low clearances. Winter brings heavy snow at elevation, so if you're driving December-March, ask your host about snow tires or chains.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Pages/511PA.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Somerset?
Campgrounds near Somerset cover everything from rustic to resort. Pennsylvania state parks like Laurel Hill and Kooser offer electric hookups (20/30/50 amp on many sites), modern restrooms with hot showers, potable water fill stations, and free RV dump stations open seasonally from mid-April to late October. Private parks like Pioneer Lakes and Hickory Hollow add full sewer hookups, Wi-Fi, swimming pools, and laundry. For dumping mid-trip, the Flying J in Bedford (25 miles east on the Turnpike) has a public dump station. Pro tip: fill your fresh-water tank before leaving town because some higher-elevation sites at Kooser and Laurel Summit are water-spigot-only, not site-hookup.
dcnr.pa.gov/StateParks/WhatToDo/Camping/Pages/default.aspxWhat equipment and amenities come with a typical Somerset RV rental?
Most RV rentals in Somerset come fully road-ready. Expect a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes for kids, a working kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, sink and basic cookware, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers include a TV, many have onboard generators, and a growing number of hosts offer mobile Wi-Fi hotspots (great for working from a campsite at Hidden Valley). Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included, and you can message the host before booking to confirm specifics like an outdoor grill or kid-friendly extras.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rvsWhat add-ons can I book and how do pickup and mileage work?
Hosts in Somerset offer a great mix of add-ons that make life easier. Common extras include camping chairs and outdoor tables, bedding and linen packages, generator use, portable grills, kayaks and bike racks, and full kitchen kits. Pickup usually happens at the host's home or a nearby meeting point in Somerset, Friedens, or Berlin, and many hosts offer paid delivery to area campgrounds. Mileage policies range from around 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage, with overage fees clearly listed on each listing. Pro tip: if you are planning a big loop to Pittsburgh, Fallingwater, and back, filter for unlimited mileage to keep things simple.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somerset%2C%20PennsylvaniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is straightforward and secure. You pay for your booking by credit or debit card through the platform, never directly to the host, which keeps everything documented and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV was returned clean, on time, and in the same condition. To avoid hiccups, do a thorough walkaround at pickup, snap dated photos inside and out, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels listed in your agreement, and dump the tanks if required. Easy steps, zero surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Somerset for winter ski trips?
Yes, and a winter motorhome rental Somerset is one of the area's best-kept secrets. Seven Springs Mountain Resort and Hidden Valley Resort both sit in Somerset County and offer ski-in convenience, with several RV-friendly lots and nearby campgrounds open seasonally. Because Somerset County averages 150+ inches of snow at higher elevations, look for hosts whose RVs are winter-ready: heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, electric heat or propane furnace, and shore-power hookups. Many private parks limit winter sites, so confirm hookups before booking. Pro tip: park at a full-hookup site, run heat tape on your water line, and treat the Fire & Ice Festival in downtown Somerset as your mid-trip warm-up. Pure adventure.
