Campgrounds and RV parks near Southmont, PA

Southmont is a small borough on the western edge of Johnstown in Cambria County, sitting in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania. The surrounding terrain is ridge-and-valley country at roughly 1,200 to 2,900 feet in elevation, which keeps summer nights cooler than the Pittsburgh lowlands and stretches the shoulder seasons on either end. RV travelers using Southmont as a base can reach a mix of private and public campgrounds within a short drive. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area sits on the 900-acre Quemahoning Reservoir south of town and offers RV sites with 30 amp electric service, tent sites, and rustic cabins. Mirror Lake RV Camping and Fishing, Boyers Pond Campground, Rainbow Woods Campground, and Woodland Campsites Inc round out the closest private options, most of them small, family-run, and oriented toward weekend and seasonal campers. Larger state parks including Prince Gallitzin, Yellow Creek, Blue Knob, Laurel Hill, and Ohiopyle are all within roughly an hour and expand the choice of hookups, lake access, and trail systems.

Pennsylvania state park campsites at parks such as Prince Gallitzin, Yellow Creek, Laurel Hill, and Ohiopyle can be reserved up to 11 months in advance through the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests Reservations website, or by calling 888-727-2757. New dates are released at noon Eastern Time, which is unusual among state park systems. Summer weekends carry a two-night minimum, and the maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with 21 nights allowed the rest of the year. Quemahoning Family Recreational Area takes reservations online through its own booking platform. Smaller private campgrounds nearby often handle bookings by phone or web form, and seasonal sites are typically claimed months before the season opens. First-come, first-served sites still exist at some state parks and state forest roadside campsites, but arriving early on a Friday is essential in peak months.
