Campgrounds near Spring Hill, Pennsylvania
Spring Hill is a small community in southeastern Cambria County, in the Allegheny Mountains of central Pennsylvania. It sits in Portage Township, directly south of the borough of Portage, on a ridge-and-valley plateau that gives RV travelers quick access to state parks, off-highway vehicle riding areas, and private RV parks within a short drive.
The closest state-park overnight option is Blue Knob State Park, roughly a half hour south by road. Blue Knob is a 6,128-acre Pennsylvania state park in the northwestern tip of Bedford County, named for Blue Knob, the second-highest mountain in Pennsylvania at 3,146 feet. Wrights Orchard Station Campground and Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade sit on the Altoona side of the ridge, near Interstate 99.
For riders and larger groups, Rock Run Recreation Area in northern Cambria County and Glendale Valley Campground round out the options, giving families a mix of state park, private RV park, and OHV-oriented basecamps within about an hour of Spring Hill.
Things to do near Spring Hill
The surrounding Alleghenies deliver hiking, fishing, and mountain views. Blue Knob State Park has an extensive multi-use trail network for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing, plus a swimming pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day and abundant wildlife. The adjacent Blue Knob All Seasons Resort is known for skiing, mountain biking, and golf.
Off-highway vehicle riders should point their rig toward Rock Run Recreation Area in Patton. Rock Run offers 140 miles of trails across the Allegheny Mountains for ATV, dirt bike, UTV, and side-by-side riders, with routes rated from easy to difficult.
Rail-history fans have plenty within reach. Altoona is home to the Horseshoe Curve and the Railroaders Memorial Museum, and the nearby Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site interprets the original portage route across the Alleghenies.

The camping calendar here is shaped by elevation and snow. The elevation of Blue Knob can cause air temperatures to be several degrees cooler than the surrounding cities, and annual snowfall averages about 12 feet. That keeps most sites shuttered through the deep winter and pushes the reliable RV window into late spring through mid-fall.
State-park tent and trailer sites follow a fixed season. At Blue Knob State Park, the 50 tent and trailer sites are open from the second Friday in April to mid-October. The Fishers Haven and Bear Den cabins sleep four, the Directors Cabin sleeps six, and the three cabins are available from the second Friday in April through the last weekend of October. Private parks in the area track a similar seasonal pattern, generally running from spring through late October.
Spring brings the wettest stretch and muddy trails, summer is peak family season with warm days and afternoon thunderstorms, and fall delivers cool nights and strong foliage before campgrounds close. Winter access is limited to day-use recreation and skiing at Blue Knob.

The camper was well stocked, clean, and comfortable. This is the 2nd time we rented from mike and he is very accommodating. Next time ill have to remember not to pack so much. They even thought of is when the nights got cold and brought us another propane tank, just in case, and we didnt even have to ask. Thanks Mike, for another wonderful fall adventure.

Shawn and Melinda made it easy to hold a memorable Penn State tailgate, even for someone like me who is new to RV rental. The Beaver Stadium RV lot didn’t have RV hookups so they made sure we had water and extra gas for the generator. They thought if every detail. The RV was super clean and well-stocked. They had excellent communication and were so friendly and helpful. I would 100% rent from them again.

This was my first time renting an RV and it was the smoothest process! The hosts were in contact with me before delivery so I knew exactly when they would arrive. They were so friendly and set up the entire camper and gave me a tour. We had an awesome experience, thank you!

How to book
Blue Knob State Park uses the Pennsylvania state-park reservation system. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance, online at visitPAparks.com or by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757). Cabins book earliest, so plan holiday weekends far in advance and use cancellation-alert tools if a preferred date is sold out.
Rock Run Recreation Area handles bookings directly through the park office rather than a state portal. The park has over 350 primitive sites and 16 electrified pull-through sites at its Clayworks campground, which has 30- and 50-amp hookups and does not allow tents.
Private parks such as Wrights Orchard Station Campground, Weimers RV 764 Campground / Scott$ Arcade, and Glendale Valley Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Confirm rig length, hookup type, and arrival window before you drive up.
What to expect
Roads here are mountain roads. Grades are steep in and out of the valleys, cell service drops in the state-forest sections, and county routes near Blue Knob narrow quickly. Bigger rigs should map fuel stops in Altoona, Duncansville, or Ebensburg before heading to the campground.
Hookups vary widely by site. Blue Knob tent and trailer sites are basic, with most sites not offering water or sewer at the pad, though a sanitary dump station, potable water spigots, modern restrooms, and hot showers are available in the campground. Electric hookups (30- or 50-amp) are provided at many sites, and rigs are generally limited to about 30 feet.
At Rock Run, most sites are primitive with no hookups; the Clayworks loop is the only electrified option, and there is no on-site dump station. Bring extra fresh water if you plan to stay in the primitive loops.

Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip and vary by host. pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/prince-gallitzin-state-park.htmlWhen is the best time to visit Spring Hill in an RV?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping Spring Hill PA visitors love, with the absolute peak being late September into mid-October when the Allegheny Mountain foliage explodes in red, orange, and gold. Summer days run 75 to 85°F with cool 55 to 65°F nights, perfect for campfires. Spring (April to May) brings wildflowers and waterfalls but expect rain. Winter dips into the 20s and 30s with regular snow, fun for snowmobiling enthusiasts but tougher for casual campers. Local insider tip: time your visit for the first two weekends of October to catch peak leaf-peeping on Route 53 and around Glendale Lake, it's one of the most underrated fall drives in the Northeast.
weather.gov/ctp/I've never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
Yes, and you're in good hands. First time renting an RV in Spring Hill is easier than most people expect because every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, hookups, slide-outs, water systems, and propane. You can also message the host beforehand with any questions. Stick to a travel trailer or Class C for your first trip, they handle a lot like a large truck or van. The roads around Cambria County are mostly two-lane rural routes with manageable grades, just take it slow on Route 53 and the climb up to Blue Knob. Pro tip: do a quick parking lot practice loop before heading to your campsite, ten minutes of low-stakes practice goes a long way.
penndot.pa.gov/TravelInPA/Safety/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if something breaks down on my trip?
You're never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on US-219, run into a battery issue at Prince Gallitzin, or have a slide-out hiccup at Raystown Lake, help is one phone call away. Your host is also typically reachable for quick troubleshooting on smaller items like water pumps or awnings, and RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN plate, it makes any service call faster.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take a Spring Hill RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate road trips are one of the best parts of renting in Pennsylvania. Spring Hill puts you within easy reach of Maryland (Deep Creek Lake is about 90 miles), West Virginia (Seneca Rocks around 150 miles), New York (Niagara Falls around 280 miles), and Ohio. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance setup, message the host directly through the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Spring Hill include the Laurel Highlands loop, the Lake Erie shoreline via Erie, PA, and a Finger Lakes swing through upstate New York. Pro tip: confirm border plans with your host at least two weeks out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Pennsylvania RV trip?
Easier than you'd think. Most motorhomes you'll find for rent near Spring Hill average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, while smaller Class B campervans can hit 16 to 20 MPG. Pennsylvania gas prices typically run a bit above the national average, with stations in Ebensburg, Portage, and along US-22 being your most convenient fill-ups. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop around the Alleghenies, budget roughly $100 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: GasBuddy is your friend in rural Cambria County, and topping off in Altoona or Johnstown is almost always cheaper than the small-town pumps along Route 53. A campervan rental Spring Hill PA visitors choose often pays for itself in fuel savings alone.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Spring Hill?
Earlier is better, but you have options. Pennsylvania State Parks (Prince Gallitzin, Blue Knob, Canoe Creek) open reservations 11 months in advance through the official Pennsylvania DCNR reservation system, and summer weekends, plus fall foliage weekends in October, fill up fast. Private parks like Glendale Valley Campground or Friendship Village usually take bookings 6 to 9 months out. For a last-minute Spring Hill RV trip, target Sunday-through-Thursday stays, you'll find open sites even mid-summer. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for the 11-month mark if you want a lakefront site at Prince Gallitzin during peak July weeks, those go within hours of release.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/make-a-reservation.htmlWhat are the roads like around Spring Hill for driving an RV?
Manageable, and beautiful. Spring Hill sits in the Allegheny Mountains, so expect rolling two-lane roads with some grades, but nothing extreme for a standard motorhome rental Spring Hill PA travelers commonly drive. US-22 and US-219 are the main four-lane corridors and are RV-friendly with truck-grade shoulders. Route 53 is the scenic local route, narrower and winding through Portage and Cresson. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, fog in the valleys on summer mornings, and snow-covered roads November through March. Pro tip: avoid the old Allegheny Portage Railroad area's tight back roads and use the Cresson exit off US-22 if you're heading to Altoona, it's the smoothest big-rig route in the area.
511pa.com/What amenities do local campgrounds offer for RVs?
More than enough for a great trip. Most full-service campgrounds near Spring Hill, including Glendale Valley, Friendship Village, and Raystown Lake / Saxton KOA, offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups at the site, plus a sanitary dump station for those staying at electric-only loops. Pennsylvania State Parks like Prince Gallitzin have electric hookups, modern restrooms with hot showers, potable water fill stations, and a dump station near the exit. Most also have laundry, Wi-Fi near the office, and camp stores for ice and firewood. Pro tip: always fill your fresh-water tank before pulling into your site at state parks and dump on the way out, it saves a second hookup and keeps the trip simple.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/find-a-park/prince-gallitzin-state-park.htmlWhat should I expect inside my Spring Hill RV rental?
Comfort, and probably more than you'd expect. Most listings near Spring Hill come fully equipped with a real bed (often a queen), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, an indoor bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with AC and a furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and either built-in or portable Wi-Fi. Class A and Class C motorhomes often have a generator for boondocking. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list carefully, things like cookware, linens, and outdoor camp chairs vary by host, and many include them free while others offer them as a small add-on package, perfect for a family RV trip Spring Hill PA hosts make easy to plan.
pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/recreation/where-to-go/state-parks/things-to-do/camping.htmlWhat pickup, drop-off, and add-on options should I know about?
Lots of flexibility, just check the listing. Standard pickup and drop-off happens at the host's location in or near Spring Hill, usually in Portage, Ebensburg, Johnstown, or Altoona. Many hosts also offer delivery to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Common add-ons include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $60), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), generators (often included), bike racks, outdoor grills, and propane fire pits. Mileage policies range from 100 miles per day up to fully unlimited. Pro tip: bundle your add-ons when you book to lock in package pricing, and confirm pickup time in writing so your host can have the rig prepped, walkthroughs typically take 30 to 45 minutes.
penndot.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspxHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Spring Hill, you pay through RVezy's secure platform, no cash, no checks, no awkward handoffs with the host. A security deposit is placed as a hold (not a charge) on your card a few days before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and released within a few days of return assuming no damage. The booking total is split into an initial payment at booking and a balance due before your trip. Pro tip: do a thorough walk-around video with the host at pickup and drop-off, it protects both of you and makes any deposit question easy to resolve, so your Spring Hill RV trip ends as smoothly as it began.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Spring Hill during the winter?
Yes, and a winter rental can be magical in the Alleghenies. Some Spring Hill hosts offer four-season rigs with heated tanks, enclosed underbellies, and upgraded furnaces, perfect for snowmobiling near Blue Knob, ice fishing on Glendale Lake, or cozying up by Laurel Highlands ski areas like Seven Springs (about 65 miles southwest). Daytime highs in January and February run 25 to 35°F with overnight lows often in the teens. Filter for listings that mention winter-ready or four-season, and message the host to confirm hookups and antifreeze setup. Pro tip: book a site at a private park with full shore-power hookups, Friendship Village and a few sites at Raystown stay open year-round, so you can run the furnace without worrying about your battery.
