Campgrounds and RV parks near Daufuskie Island, SC

The island is car-light and slow-paced. Golf cart rentals are available through Daufuskie Difference, Tour Daufuskie, Outside Hilton Head, and May River Excursions, and most visitors tour historic sites, Gullah heritage landmarks, artist studios, and quiet beaches by cart. Bicycles, kayak rentals, and dolphin cruises round out the day-trip menu. Back on the mainland, Hilton Head offers Atlantic beaches, extensive bike paths, and numerous golf courses. Tybee Island provides pier fishing, a historic lighthouse, and easy access to downtown Savannah. Bluffton's Old Town, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, and the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge give RV families additional low-key outings between ferry crossings.

The Lowcountry runs on a humid subtropical calendar. Hilton Head Island has hot summers and cool winters, with a strong seasonal pattern where summers are significantly wetter than other times of year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel and ferry rides. March through May brings milder temperatures and lower rainfall, and September through November offers warm water with easing humidity. Summer is peak family season. Beaches, pools, and ferries run at capacity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Beaufort County, which includes the area around Daufuskie, has roughly a three percent annual chance of a hurricane landfall and about one percent for a major hurricane, with named storms usually arriving from June through November and hurricanes generally restricted to August, September, and October. Book campground sites and ferry seats well in advance for summer weekends and holiday periods. Winter is the quiet season. Temperatures are mild by North-American standards, some resort amenities close for maintenance, and ferry schedules can be lighter. Confirm operating dates with each ferry operator and campground before arrival.

Expect a two-part trip: park the rig on the mainland or Hilton Head, then travel light to Daufuskie by ferry. Daufuskie is accessible only by boat or passenger ferry from Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, and golf carts are the main mode of island transportation, which should be rented prior to arrival. Bring what fits in a small bag or backpack, plus water, sun protection, and any medications. Hilton Head-side campgrounds feature oak canopies, Spanish moss, paved pads, pools, and full hookups. Cell coverage is generally strong on Hilton Head and in Bluffton; on Daufuskie itself, service can be spotty. Cash is useful for small vendors on the island, and food options are limited, so pack snacks for children. Biting insects, especially no-see-ums and mosquitoes, are active from late spring through fall. Bring repellent, closed shoes for beach walks, and layers for cool morning ferry rides.
