Campgrounds and RV parks near Freeman, SD

Freeman sits in Hutchinson County in southeastern South Dakota, roughly halfway between Sioux Falls and Yankton along the SD-81 corridor. The town is small and largely agricultural, so most RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring the James River valley, the Missouri River corridor to the south, and the lakes region to the east. RV options close to town are modest in size and easy to reach. Dakota Sunsets RV Park and Campground offers full-service sites in Freeman itself, while Rykens RV Park serves travelers passing through Parkston to the west. For a lake setting, Oak - Lake Vermillion State Recreation Area lies east of town near Canistota, and Montrose Campground provides another option along the I-90 corridor. Travelers heading south toward the Nebraska border commonly stage at Yankton / Missouri River KOA Journey, which puts Lewis and Clark Lake, Gavins Point Dam, and the Missouri National Recreational River within a short drive.

State-managed sites at Oak - Lake Vermillion State Recreation Area are reserved through the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks system at CampSD.com. Reservations open 90 days before arrival, and campsites and camping cabins become available both online and through the call center at 7 a.m. CT on the first day reservations open. A state park entrance license is required of all motorized vehicles for entrance into Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, and an entrance license is not included in reservation costs. Popular weekends, especially those with lake access, are typically claimed quickly. Private parks including Dakota Sunsets RV Park and Campground, Rykens RV Park, Montrose Campground, and Yankton / Missouri River KOA Journey take direct reservations by phone or through their own websites. KOA properties also accept bookings through the KOA app and reward program. For long rigs, callers should confirm pull-through length, big-rig turning radius, and 50-amp availability at time of booking.
