Campgrounds and RV parks near Cactus, TX

Lake Meredith is the main draw. The reservoir supports boating year-round, and anglers target bass, catfish, crappie, and walleye. Multiple public boat ramps ring the lake, and Blue West Campground provides access on the west side of the reservoir. On land, the recreation area offers hiking, mountain biking, boating, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, birdwatching, and hunting. Adjacent to the lake, Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument is open for ranger-led tours by reservation and sits about 12 miles from the Sanford-Yake area. Day trips from a Cactus base include Amarillo attractions such as Cadillac Ranch, the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the second-largest canyon in the United States, roughly 50 miles from the lake.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Panhandle. April, May, and October generally bring daytime highs in the 70s Fahrenheit with cool nights, and shoulder-season crowds at Lake Meredith stay modest. Spring also brings the strongest thunderstorm and tornado risk in the region, as the Panhandle sits within Tornado Alley, so travelers should monitor NOAA weather radio and be prepared to shelter. Summer is hot and often windy. June through August highs commonly reach the low 90s, and afternoon thunderstorms can be intense but brief. August is typically the wettest month. Summer is peak season for boating on Lake Meredith, and weekends at the more accessible campgrounds fill quickly. Winter is cold, dry, and windy on the High Plains, with freezing overnight lows common from December through February and occasional snow. Some park facilities and water systems run on reduced service in winter, though the primitive campgrounds around the lake generally remain open year-round to self-contained rigs.

The landscape around Cactus is open High Plains grassland cut by the Canadian River breaks, with canyons framing Lake Meredith. Expect wide horizons, big skies, and very little shade, so awnings and window shades earn their keep in summer. Most campgrounds inside Lake Meredith National Recreation Area are primitive. Basic amenities include vault toilets, picnic tables, and shade shelters, but no hookups at the sites listed here. Accessible restrooms with showers and dump stations with drinking water are located near Fritch Fortress and Sanford-Yake campgrounds, so plan tank capacity accordingly. Wind is a constant factor on the Panhandle. Stake down awnings, secure loose gear, and be aware that spring dust storms and summer thunderstorms can arrive quickly. Some camping areas are soft during rainy conditions, so drive with caution when leaving paved roads. Cell coverage is generally good along U.S. 287 and near Fritch, but can drop in the canyons.
