Elmendorf sits in southeast Bexar County, Texas, roughly fifteen miles southeast of downtown San Antonio along US-181. The town serves as a quieter RV base for travelers who want proximity to San Antonio's attractions without staying inside the city. Most campgrounds in the area are open year-round and cater primarily to full-hookup RV travel.
Nearby options include Cactus Country RV Park and Vista Ridge RV Park, both privately operated parks with full hookups. Water View RV Park rounds out the local private-park options south of the city.
Two CPS Energy cooling lakes, Calaveras and Braunig, sit in southeast Bexar County and were originally built as cooling ponds for area power stations. Calaveras Lake Park - CPS Energy and Braunig Lake Park - CPS Energy both offer lakeside camping managed under CPS Energy and operated by Thousand Trails Management Services, giving RV travelers a public-park alternative alongside the private RV resorts.
Things to do near Elmendorf
Fishing drives much of the outdoor activity around Elmendorf. Calaveras Lake covers 3,624 acres with a maximum depth of 45 feet, and channel catfish are the most sought-after species followed by hybrid striped bass, red drum, and largemouth bass. Braunig Lake covers 1,350 acres with a maximum depth of 50 feet, and red drum are the most popular sport fish there, followed by hybrid striped bass and catfish.
San Antonio's core attractions sit a short drive north. Families typically build day trips around the Alamo, the River Walk, the historic Spanish missions, SeaWorld, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Mitchell Lake Audubon Center and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park sit between Elmendorf and downtown, making them easy stops for travelers with an RV base south of the city.
The CPS Energy lake parks add picnic areas, a boat ramp, hiking, and shoreline fishing on both reservoirs.

Winters are the driest season, though heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms can occur in warmer months. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, and South Texas wildflowers along roadsides typically peak in March and April.
Summer heat is the dominant planning factor. Daily highs in San Antonio peak in the mid-90s from June through August, with warm nights in the low to mid-70s. RV air conditioning and shaded sites matter from June through September. Late summer through early fall also overlaps with Gulf tropical activity, and heavy rain events can flood low-lying sites.
Winter is mild but variable. San Antonio averages about 14 freezing days a year, freezes normally occur from November to March, and most freezing nights are followed by a daytime thaw. Occasional hard freezes can affect hookups, so cool-season travelers should carry a heated hose or hookup insulation.

Great small RV with plenty of amenities. Karina was a great host and worked with us on pick up and drop off times.
CODY D. - Jun 2026
Such an awesome experience. We spent a few days at Colorado Bend State Park and the trailer was perfect. There were not any water/electrical hookups at our campsite, but we were able to fill the RV with potable water, and run the necessary items (lights, water pump, heater) on battery/generator. Such an awesome trip and this travel trailer made the experience much more enjoyable! Karina and Ivan were hospitable AND ensured that we had everything we needed for our trip. 10/10 recommend.

My wife and I had a fantastic experience! The camper is well maintained, clean and comfortable. Couldn't have asked for more. I would like to add that the a/c worked perfectly, given the Florida weather even during the holiday season. Stephanie was a dream to work with, she has a great personality and made sure that we were well taken care of.

Great little camper. We will definitely rent it again

How to book campgrounds near Elmendorf
Private parks such as Cactus Country RV Park, Vista Ridge RV Park, and Water View RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Full-hookup sites are often bookable online with instant confirmation. For holiday weekends, spring break, and Fiesta San Antonio in April, book several weeks ahead.
Reservations at Braunig Lake Park - CPS Energy and Calaveras Lake Park - CPS Energy can be made for covered camping sites, picnicking and camping sites, group sites, the pavilion, and the RV sites around both lakes. Shoreline fishing areas cannot be reserved and remain first-come, first-served. RV sites with hookups are limited and are handled by phone through the park store.
CPS Energy lake parks are open year-round, with camping and day-use fees, and reservations are required for reserved sites.
What to expect
Elmendorf itself is small and rural, with limited services beyond gas stations and convenience stores. Full grocery runs are easiest in southeast San Antonio along Loop 410 or SE Military Drive. Cell coverage is generally strong across the major carriers given the proximity to San Antonio.
Road access is straightforward from I-37, US-181, and Loop 1604, and most private parks in the area accommodate big rigs with full hookups. Sites at Calaveras Lake Park - CPS Energy and Braunig Lake Park - CPS Energy are more basic and geared toward a fishing-and-camping crowd rather than resort amenities, with a park store on site for tackle, bait, ice, and camping supplies.
Wildlife around the lakes includes snakes along shorelines and grassy areas. Pets must be leashed in the CPS parks, and mosquitos and biting flies can be persistent near the water in warmer months.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmendorf,TexasWhat do I need to rent an RV in Elmendorf, Texas?
Renting an RV in Elmendorf is refreshingly simple. A regular Texas (or any U.S. state) driver's license is all you need to drive any RV listed on RVezy, including Class A motorhomes, since Texas does not require a commercial license or special endorsement for personal-use RVs at typical rental weights. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license, and an International Driving Permit is recommended if your license is not in English. First time renting an RV near San Antonio? Message the host with your travel dates and they'll walk you through everything at handover.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Elmendorf covered by protection and roadside assistance?
Yes, every RV rental in Elmendorf, TX booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-37 toward Corpus Christi or US-181 to the coast with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level (not the host) at checkout, with tiers ranging from basic to premium for added confidence, and the plan covers most physical damage to the RV. Roadside help covers flat tires, lockouts, jump-starts, and towing, day or night. Pro tip: snap a quick walk-around video with your host at pickup so any pre-existing scuffs are documented before you roll out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Elmendorf RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. Refund amounts after that grace period depend on how far out you are from your trip start date. Because the same policy applies across every listing, you don't need to compare fine print between hosts, and if a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book early for Fiesta San Antonio week in late April, since that's the highest-demand window for RV rental in Elmendorf, and you'll have plenty of time to adjust if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Elmendorf RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Elmendorf options are plentiful on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see motorhomes and trailers from hosts who welcome dogs (and often cats too). Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is clearly listed on the booking page. Once you're rolling, your pup will love the area: Braunig Lake RV Resort welcomes leashed pets, and the San Antonio River Walk's Museum Reach section is leash-friendly with shady paths along the water. Pro tip: bring a collapsible water bowl, summer pavement in Bexar County gets hot enough to burn paws by midday.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmendorf,TexasCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Elmendorf?
Yes, RV delivery in Elmendorf is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a 30-foot rig down Loop 410. Many local hosts will tow a travel trailer or fifth wheel straight to Braunig Lake RV Resort or a private property within Bexar or Wilson County, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees usually run a few dollars per mile from the host's location, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius of Elmendorf. Just use the Delivery filter when searching. Pro tip: ask your host to include linens and a starter propane tank, many will bundle these for a flat add-on fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmendorf,TexasHow far can I drive on an Elmendorf RV rental, and are there mileage limits?
You've got plenty of room to roam. Most Elmendorf hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage upgrades for a flat daily fee, which is the smart pick for a longer Texas loop. From Elmendorf you can reach Port Aransas beaches in about 2.5 hours, Fredericksburg wine country in about 1.5 hours, Austin in roughly 90 minutes, and South Padre Island in about 4.5 hours. Mileage policies are listed clearly on each listing page before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a Hill Country RV road trip from Elmendorf, message the host and ask about a custom mileage package, many will discount it for multi-day bookings.

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Elmendorf has on offer. Braunig Lake RV Resort, just off I-37, has full-hookup sites with lake fishing and is only minutes from Elmendorf. Alamo River RV Resort sits just south of San Antonio with riverside sites. For a state park experience, Choke Canyon State Park is about 75 miles south with great birdwatching, and Guadalupe River State Park is around 60 miles north for tubing and swimming. Pro tip: reserve Texas State Parks up to five months ahead through the official Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, they sell out fast on weekends.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/When is the best time for an Elmendorf RV trip?
Elmendorf's South Texas climate means RV season runs nearly year-round, but the sweet spot is mid-October through late April when daytime highs typically range between 65F and 80F and humidity drops. Spring (March to May) brings wildflowers along US-181 and bluebonnet blooms in nearby Wilson County. Summer (June to September) is hot, often in the 90s to low 100s, so plan early-morning drives and pick a rental with strong roof AC and shaded hookup sites. Winter is mild and one of the most underrated times for RV camping near San Antonio because campgrounds are quieter and prices drop. Pro tip: book a Fiesta San Antonio week rental (late April) at least 4 months ahead, it's the busiest stretch of the year locally.
weather.gov/ewx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay picking one up in Elmendorf?
You'll do great, and you're in one of the easiest regions in Texas to learn. Every RVezy host in Elmendorf provides a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, slide-outs, water systems, propane, the generator, and dumping. Many first-timers choose a Class C motorhome (drives like a big van) or a smaller travel trailer under 25 feet to keep things manageable. Elmendorf's flat terrain, wide rural roads, and easy access to I-37 make practice loops simple before you hit the highway. If you'd rather not drive at all, choose the Delivery filter and let your host bring the RV to you. Pro tip: take 20 minutes to practice mirrors and right turns in a quiet lot before heading toward San Antonio traffic.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my Elmendorf RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing, whether you're parked at Braunig Lake or stranded on US-181 heading to the coast. One call gets a technician dispatched to your location. Your host is also just a message away through the RVezy app, and most South Texas hosts know reliable local mechanics in San Antonio, Floresville, and Pleasanton. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after the trip if anything bigger comes up. Pro tip: before you leave Elmendorf, save the roadside number in your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate, you'll need them if you ever call for service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Elmendorf RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Interstate road trips are absolutely on the table, and a huge draw of an RV road trip from Elmendorf is how quickly you can reach Louisiana (about 6 hours east on I-10), New Mexico (about 9 hours west), or Oklahoma (about 8 hours north). Most hosts welcome cross-state travel within the U.S., but always confirm your route with the host before booking since some have preferred mileage zones. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because the included protection and insurance coverage stop at the U.S. border. Pro tip: popular interstate runs include Elmendorf to New Orleans and Elmendorf to Santa Fe, both doable in two driving days.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Elmendorf RV rental?
Texas typically has some of the lowest fuel prices in the country, which makes a motorhome rental Elmendorf trip very affordable. Check the EIA or AAA for current San Antonio area averages before you go. Realistic fuel economy is roughly 7 to 9 MPG for a Class A, 8 to 12 MPG for a Class C, 15 to 18 MPG for a Class B campervan, and your tow vehicle will drop 3 to 5 MPG when pulling a travel trailer. A 300-mile Hill Country loop from Elmendorf to Fredericksburg and back is an easy weekend route to budget around. Pro tip: large travel-center chains along I-35 and I-10 often beat city station prices, so plan fill-ups on the highway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Elmendorf?
Plan ahead and you'll have your pick of the best campgrounds near Elmendorf. Texas State Parks like Choke Canyon and Guadalupe River open reservations up to 5 months in advance through the Texas Parks and Wildlife reservation system, and prime weekends (especially spring break in March and Thanksgiving) book out quickly. Private parks like Braunig Lake RV Resort and Alamo River RV Resort accept reservations several months ahead and fill up fast around Fiesta San Antonio (late April) and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo (February). For weekday or off-season stays, 2 to 3 weeks notice is usually plenty. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for 5 months before your target Saturday so you can grab state park slots the moment they open.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/park-information/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Elmendorf and San Antonio?
Driving conditions around Elmendorf are about as easy as Texas gets. The town sits on flat South Texas plain with wide, straight rural roads that are perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel of a motorhome. Watch for rush-hour congestion on I-37 and Loop 410 into San Antonio between 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Summer afternoon thunderstorms (June through September) can drop visibility fast, so pull over if needed. Low-clearance worries are minimal on the highways, but parts of downtown San Antonio have older low bridges, so stick to designated truck and RV routes. Pro tip: avoid driving big rigs through the historic downtown area near the Alamo, use the Delivery option instead if you're camping near the city.
drivetexas.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Elmendorf?
South Texas campgrounds are well-equipped for any RV rental Elmendorf TX visitors choose. Expect 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups at private parks like Braunig Lake RV Resort and Alamo River RV Resort, plus on-site dump stations, WiFi, laundry, and bathhouses. Most parks have pools (especially welcome in summer), and many include propane refill stations, camp stores, and dog runs. State parks like Choke Canyon offer water and electric sites with a centralized dump station, but no sewer at individual pads. Pro tip: not every site is pull-through, so message the campground when reserving if you're driving a 35-foot-plus rig and need easy entry.
tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/choke-canyonWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Elmendorf?
You'll find most Elmendorf RVs come fully equipped and ready to roll. A typical Class C motorhome rental sleeps 4 to 7 people across a cab-over bunk, dinette conversion, and rear queen bed, with a working kitchen (fridge, propane stove, microwave), full bathroom with shower, roof AC, furnace, generator, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone riding. Many hosts include a TV and some offer WiFi hotspots or Starlink. Travel trailers and fifth wheels offer similar layouts with even more living space. Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included, the sleeps count, and any add-ons. Pro tip: kitchen kits, bedding, and outdoor chairs are often optional add-ons, so check the listing or message the host to bundle them before pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmendorf,TexasWhat add-ons and extras can I get with an Elmendorf RV rental?
Customizing your trip is easy. Popular add-ons from Elmendorf hosts include bike racks, kayak and SUP carriers, generators (often free or a small daily fee with a fuel cap), portable propane fire pits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, linen and kitchen packages, and Starlink or hotspot WiFi. Pickup is usually at the host's Elmendorf or south San Antonio address, with handover taking about 30 to 45 minutes. Drop-off is at the same spot at the agreed time, with late returns billed hourly. Mileage policies are listed up front, typically 100 to 150 miles per night with the option to prepay for unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking, many hosts give a small discount versus adding them later.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmendorf,TexasHow does payment and the security deposit work for an Elmendorf RV rental?
Payments on RVezy are handled securely through the platform, so you'll never hand cash to the host. When you book, you pay the rental total (nightly rate, fees, chosen protection plan, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card. The refundable security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is placed as a pre-authorization hold on your card shortly before pickup, then released after return assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. To avoid issues, do a video walk-around with your host at pickup and drop-off, return with the fuel and propane levels you started with, and dump the tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: make sure the card you book with has enough available limit to comfortably absorb the deposit hold so other purchases aren't affected.
