Campgrounds and RV parks near Goldthwaite, TX

The main outdoor draw is Colorado Bend State Park, about an hour southeast of town. Visitors hike the three-mile round-trip trail to the 70-foot Gorman Falls, join guided cave tours, cool off at Spicewood Springs, and paddle or fish the Colorado River. The park protects more than 5,300 acres and over 35 miles of trails open to hikers and mountain bikers. Families with younger kids often build a day around Buena Vista Wildlife Safari and RV Park in nearby Evant, which runs a drive-through wildlife park with more than 250 free-roaming animals, a petting zoo, and a splash pool that operates from spring through fall. In town, Goldthwaite offers small-town cafes, local history stops, and quick access to the San Saba River. Wine tastings, small rodeos, and community events run through much of the year in the surrounding ranch country.

Spring is the busiest camping window. March through May brings wildflowers along the roadsides, comfortable daytime temperatures, and the highest river flows for paddling. May is typically the wettest month of the year and can shut down low-water crossings after heavy storms, so travelers should check park updates before departure. Weekends at Colorado Bend State Park routinely sell out in spring, and group camps book heavily. Summer runs hot. Daytime highs average in the mid-90s in July and August, and shaded riverside sites and swimming holes become the main draw. Fire restrictions and burn bans are common in dry summers, especially across Mills, San Saba, and Lampasas counties. Fall brings cooler nights and a second peak in rainfall around October, the wettest single month in the local record. Winter is short and mild, with occasional freezes. Most private RV parks stay open year-round, and state park drive-up sites remain available, though ranger programs and prescribed burns can affect some areas between September and March.

The private RV parks around Goldthwaite generally offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, level gravel or asphalt pads, laundry, and basic Wi-Fi. Cell coverage is workable in town but drops off quickly along the river valleys and inside Colorado Bend State Park. Colorado Bend State Park is primitive by design. Drive-up sites accept self-contained RVs up to about 20 feet with no hookups, and the park has no RV sewage disposal facilities. Potable water and composting toilets are available in the camping areas. The park gate is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and campers arriving later must call the park before 4:30 p.m. for a gate code. Expect rough limestone terrain, sun exposure on trails, and hot pavement in summer. Rangers advise carrying at least one liter of water per person per hour of activity, watching for scorpions and snakes at primitive sites, and packing bug spray from spring through fall.
